Dating to 1761, Casa al Colle is a rustic villa that is tucked away in the Garfagnana Mountains of northern Tuscany. Overlooking the Italian countryside that inspired poets Byron and Shelley, this spacious summer home is the perfect retreat for a large family, or two families holidaying together. The villa includes historic touches such as heavy exposed wooden beams and quaint whitewashed walls. Gathering as a large group whilst enjoying some seclusion is easy in Casa al Colle, as the expansive home has three separate entrances and opportunities to create extra sleeping space. The ground floor has a sliding partition and a sofa bed, shower room and TV, which makes a great den for a teenager craving independence. In the grounds are 300 olive trees, a swimming pool, an outside dining area with a wood-fired pizza oven, and an inner courtyard that is open to the stars. Generous panoramic balconies are perfect for taking in the spectacular views of the 16th century hamlet of San Ramano below. There is a locally based team on hand to help guests have the most comfortable stay possible: the owners of the villa, Veronica the property manager, the housekeeper and Maura, the cook. Maura can make you her legendary pizza and a range of Tuscan specialties and can even teach you how to make Italian pasta (payable locally).

The last 200 metres leading up to the villa after the entrance gate are along a very steep and narrow road. The kilometre readings given in these directions (shown in brackets) are only for guidance and may not be exact. We suggest that before you set off you acquaint yourselves with the way your odometer works. In most cars it is electronic. To reset most of these models, press the button until the reading flashes for some time and then becomes zero. Please call or send a message to Veronica as you are leaving the airport and then again as you reach Borgo a Mozzano so she can have an idea of your estimated time of arrival and meet you at the village car parking and accompany you to Casa al Colle From PISA airport (approximately 1 hour 10 minutes): • On exiting the car hire area turn right following ‘tutte le direzioni’ (FI-PI-LI); at the roundabout take the 2nd exit following green sign ‘autostrade’ • At the next roundabout take the 1st exit still following the green sign ‘autostrade’ • At the roundabout take the 1st exit on the right-hand side still following green sign towards GENOVA-LIVORNO; follow this road all the way to the toll booth (avoid Telepass line) – after toll booth keep right towards FIRENZE • Continue on the motorway until you see the exit sign for PISA NORD-FIRENZE; bear right direction FIRENZE joining the A11 motorway • Follow ALL DRIVERS From BOLOGNA airport (approximately 2 hours 10 minutes): • Exit the airport following green signs for the A1 motorway MILANO-FIRENZE • You will do a short stretch of dual carriage way • Join the A1/E35 motorway south bound direction FIRENZE-ROMA • At a certain point the A1 motorway divides into 2; PANORAMICA or VARIANTE, the first being the panoramic route with a lot more bends and the ‘VARIANTE’ being the straighter route. You can take either of these as both join again just before FLORENCE. • When you’ve come down from the mountains into the valley just approaching the outskirts of Florence exit the A1 motorway to join the A11 FIRENZE MARE • Follow ALL DRIVERS From FLORENCE airport (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes): • Exit the car hire compound and turn LEFT. • Turn LEFT at the traffic lights and then get into the left hand lane following the road all the way around and back in to the airport direction A1-A11AUTOSTRADE • At the end of the dual carriage way go through the toll booth (not the TELEPASS lane) and continue on the A11 direction PISA • Follow ALL DRIVERS ALL DRIVERS: • Exit A11 motorway at LUCCA EST; after the toll booth (avoiding telepass lane) bear left and stay on the middle line. Continue straight on passing a traffic light • At the roundabout continue straight on direction ABETONE; follow the main one-way road staying on the middle lane, then bear right toward ABETONE (SS12), follow the City walls • At the roundabout take the 2nd exit direction ABETONE staying on the left lane; at the next roundabout take the 1st exit still following ABETONE • After the traffic light at the end of the road turn half right towards ABETONE; you will pass two roundabouts, take always the 2nd exit direction • After 4 km straight, you get to big roundabout (in front you’ll see supermarket ESSELUNGA) take 3rd exit direction CASTELNUOVO-ABETONE SS12 and cross the bridge (from here 26 km to SAN ROMANO) • At the end of the bridge turn right and go all straight, passing 4 short galleries • After 5 km before turn slightly right direction BORGO A MOZZANOCASTELNUOVO SP2 and cross the new bridge • When you get to the roundabout take first exit straight and follow main road all the way to BORGO A MOZZANO bypassing the centre of the village (ignore the sign BORGO A MOZZANO on your left-hand side) • At the roundabout (on the right-side BAR BLUE MATTISSE) take the second exit straight direction CASTELNUOVO GARFAGNANA; Call Keyholder Veronica • After 500mt you can see on the right side the famous DEVILS BRIDGE (12th century) • Follow this road direction CASTELNUOVO (after 4 kms on left side BAR QUADROM FOGLIO) • After ca. 4 kms turn left towards MOTRONE-SAN ROMANO (clearly indicated) • You will drive up a steep narrow road in the forest for approximately 4 kms occasionally beep your horn to alert drivers coming from the opposite way • Getting out of the forest the road levels and you pass the village entry sign for SAN ROMANO, notice a yellow villa on the right (where the owners Thomas and Fiorella live). Continue for 200m and stop at Car Park next to village church and village fountain Veronica will meet you there and accompany you with her car up to Casa al Colle (250mt) Welcome to Casa al Colle!
