You can also jump on the free island trolley or rent beach bikes or golf carts to explore more of the island and its wonderful treasures. Anna Maria Island is a tropical barrier island that extends 7.5 miles along the Gulf of Mexico. Fine white sand public beaches run the length of the island. The island is a nesting area for sea turtles, has a year-round dolphin population and is home to manatees, cownose rays and dozens of other marine creatures and shore birds. Unlike many tourist areas in Florida typified by endless rows of high-rise apartment buildings and hotels, Anna Maria Island retains a low-key Florida vibe with a small-town feel, Key West style homes lining the canals, and small resorts mixed in with private residences along the shore. The island offers plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy including: relaxing on the beach, swimming, snorkeling, watching sunsets, fishing, birding, boating, shopping, golfing, bicycling, kayaking, paddleboarding, tennis, pickleball and nature hikes in the nearby preserves.
