Eagle Lake is known as one of the quieter lakes in the region with an abundance of wildlife, tranquil panoramic views and ample outdoor recreation activities by water or land. Eagle Lake features 410-acres of crystal-clear water formed on a plateau with an elevation of 951 feet and is 2.5 miles in length. The source of water that creates Eagle Lake includes an underground aquafer which is why it is known for its pristine waters. Loons, Deer, Brown Trout, American Eagles, Largemouth Bass, Otters, Osprey, Green Frogs, Racoons, Beavers, Moose and more are some of the wildlife that you'll see when visiting.

In addition to all of the recreational activities just steps outside the home, the area offers endless hiking trails, historic landmarks including the famous Fort Ticonderoga located only 10 miles from the home, the Star Trek Museum located 8 miles from the home, downtown Schroon Lake located 12 miles from the home and a variety of farm stands and apple orchards selling locally grown produce.

MORE ABOUT US:

Originally, the home was built during the Gilded Age (early 1900’s) as a private Great Camp home to the Spaulding family. Eighty-five years later, our family purchased the property and did a complete renovation. We were able to keep many of the original features while modernizing much of it to today’s comforts. It’s a unique blend of old and new; keeping the character of being an Adirondack Gilded Age Great Camp while not sacrificing any of the modern conveniences of today.

WHAT IS AN ADIRONDACK GREAT CAMP?

Early 19th century architects created function from form, taking design cues from nature to establish one of the most recognizable architectural styles of the era – Adirondack Rustic. Expansive lodging compounds, referred to as Great Camps, were designed to blend into their natural surroundings, offering rustic yet luxurious retreats for the Gilded Age elite. Adirondack Great Camps were as synonymous with the Gilded Age as the names Vanderbilt and Rockefeller. Designed to blend into their natural surroundings, these sprawling compounds spanned the most coveted shorelines of the Adirondacks – as well as some of the most remote. The Great Camp on Eagle Lake is one of the homes in the Adirondacks to have this shared history.

SOME OF OUR HOME'S HISTORY

The Spaulding Family purchased the land at the beginning of the Gilded Age and built it section-by-section. At one time, the room we refer to as the "Great Room" was the entire structure. As our family did the renovations, we could see and date when each new section was built from the stud work and around window frames where period newspapers were used as insulation.

Due to the condition of the house and grounds in 1982 when it was purchased, some of the original features of the home were not salvageable. For example, the outside of the home was once all half pine logs which we had to replace because of water rot. However, on the enclosed porch, the interior walls still have the original pine log siding that once encompassed the whole home.

The boat house you see today is actually the second boat house built by the Spaulding's. The first one was destroyed during an early spring landslide off the mountain behind the home that pushed it onto the partially-still-frozen lake. Rather than remove the damaged one, the Spaulding family allowed it to sink to the bottom of the cove and built a new one in its place. When you snorkel in front of the current boat house, you can see some of the original boat house's remints including beams and stonework. One of the advantages of having the original boat house underwater is that it created an ideal habitat for many species of local fish, making the beach area a great fishing location.

Wherever possible, original features of the Spaulding's Great Adirondack Camp was kept during the renovations including the fireplaces, hard wood floors, French doors, built-in bookshelves, Gazebo, Boat House, and so much more. For 8 years following the purchase of the home in 1982, the whole family worked together to complete all the renovations. It was a labor of love then and continues to be some 38 years later as we have continued to improve and maintain the beauty of this Adirondack Great Camp.

If you are looking for a unique location for your Adirondack vacation, this location is ideal for making memories that will last a lifetime.

Historic gathering place
The cabin hit the historic family vibe of a beloved family gathering place, and we are forever grateful for the generosity of the hosts for sharing their treasured family home. Eagle Lake is a beautiful, calm lake, great for swimming and family get togethers, and we enjoyed the use of the kayaks, the screened porch, and the well stocked kitchen, not to mention the cozy seating all over the house that was great for reading and playing the large collection of games. Old building issues dogged us a bit, but the quirky personal assortment of treasures gathered through time was delightful. There were essentially three different bedrooms--a corner bedroom that overlooks the lake, a second bedroom on the lake side, and the family suite that sleeps 7 across the hall on the road side, consisting of the trundle bed, the bunk bed, and a queen bed through another door. The fans provided were lifesavers against the heat, though more screens and operational windows would have helped too. The house backs up to a relatively busy highway with loud and frequent logging trucks at all hours. It has been divided between the main part that looks toward the main lake, with apartments on one end that overlook the swim/boat launch area, all of which share the kayaks, float, firepit, screened porch and boathouse area. Thankfully the families that rented those places were easygoing with the shared space and we enjoyed lots of water time without any problems.Kayak trips and swims to the nearby islands were daily adventures, and nearby New York State Parks were gold--especially Crown Point, which is a pre-Revolutionary War English fort and the site of an even older French Fort, next to a lovely bridge that leads to Vermont. Of course, we had to try cider donuts at Gunnison Lakeshore Orchards on a day work was being done on the house. In general, the hosts were very responsive to issues that came up, and wonderful about providing information that made our stay memorable. They could not have been nicer and do everything they can to make their guests feel welcome and comfortable.

Amazing house, and location, but not 5 BR
We had a wonderful week, despite not great weather, and found the hosts to be very responsive to our questions. You are right on a lake with a fun trampoline in the water! The house was stocked with more spices than I've ever seen outside of a supermarket, the floats and kayaks were great, and the first floor space was huge! Unfortunately, though the house is listed as 5 bedrooms, you need to read and re-read the description to figure out that the "family suite" is really 3 bedrooms in one! Although you can close the door to the queen size bed room, you have to walk through the other "two" rooms ( it's really one room with two sections) to get to the queen bedroom. So unless you know that, and we didn't, you can find sleeping arrangements incredibly challenging. It's also on a road with no sidewalks and trucks do drive by quite often.

Mary Kral has been in the hospitality industry for 35 plus years and looks forward to making your stay a memorable one. Originally from the Northeast of the United States, Mary has traveled the world and has lived in New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Japan and Spain. Mary has taken the best experiences she’s had as a traveler and a hostess to make the The Great Camp on Eagle Lake an enjoyable and unique place to stay in the Adirondacks of New York.

Γιατί επέλεξαν αυτό το κατάλυμα

In 1970, Mary and William were married and on their honeymoon on nearby Lake George in Ticonderoga, New York. Unfortunately, it rained most of the time they were there so they decided to cruise around in their VW beetle to take in the breathe-taking mountains and landscapes in the area. As they were exploring, they came across this beautiful Great Camp home with a for sale sign. They decided to pull in and take a look around, walking the grounds hand-in-hand, peeking into windows and dreaming of a time when one day, they could own a home as grand as the one they were exploring. Money was tight as they started their married life in New York City, so to purchase any type of home in this Adirondack paradise was beyond their reach and just a dream.

As time passed, Mary and William continued to vacation at their honeymoon spot whenever they could. As their 3 daughters were born, they too experienced a love and appreciation for the Adirondack life. Each time Mary and William returned, they would wonder where that beautiful lakefront home was that they found during their honeymoon. When vacationing in the area on a rainy day, the whole family would get in the car for what was called an "adventure," traveling back mountain roads in search of the house from their honeymoon.

Then in 1982 when on vacation, a local friend mentioned there was a large house on a nearby lake had recently gone on the market. He told them that although it was in great disrepair, it was a shame no one was interested in purchasing it. William asked him to take them to see it the next day. After searching for 12 years, they had finally found the home of their honeymoon dreams and purchased it. However, to say it was in disrepair was an understatement. The building and its grounds needed a complete renovation. For 8 years following the purchase, the whole family worked together to complete all the renovations. It was a labor of love then and continues to be some 38 years later.
