## Emplacement
Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer is a commune in the Var department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, located on the peninsula of the same name, which is linked to the mainland by the Sablettes isthmus. It lies some fifteen kilometres south of Toulon, where it partly "closes off" the harbour. The history of Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer is closely linked to that of the nearby Toulon naval base. First with the installation of an infirmary and then a military hospital, then a fort and batteries for defensive purposes and finally a lighthouse.
Today, the French Navy still occupies three quarters of the town, with a naval training centre, a diving base and a mechanics' school.
From a civilian point of view, the town's activities, which were once focused on agriculture, have now been concentrated on tourism, with the creation of a marina and the preservation of a high-quality coastal environment where beaches and pine forests are much appreciated. With a population of some 5,800, the town also boasts a dynamic cultural scene. As a result, it has a legitimate reputation as a holiday destination.
