About the host
Hosted by Sue Crotts

Welcome to Blue Ridge Journeys! I live in Greensboro, North Carolina with my husband. We have enjoyed our cabin retreat in the forest immensely since we built it in 2010, rarely missing a weekend and spending many vacations there. We are putting the cabin on the rental market for the first time this year, in 2024. I hope you will enjoy it as much as we have!
Why they chose this property
Gingercake Acres is located on Gingercake Mountain, which runs along the east rim of the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area in the 500,000 + acre Pisgah National Forest. We enjoy the serenity, peace and beauty of our community on Gingercake Mountain. Bird songs begin the morning,. Wildflowers bloom from March to October. The private roads in Gingercake Acres provide great walks through the forested neighborhood. The mountain is 4100 feet in elevation, with our cabin at 3700 feet. Summer temperatures are typically in the 70s. Evenings can be cool.
Autumn brings spectacular displays of color that can be enjoyed from the heights of nearby Grandfather Mountain (5946')to Shortoff Mountain (2883')at the bottom of the Linville Gorge or via a ride on the gorgeous Blue Ridge Parkway.
Winter views from the cabin include Parks Mountain. Skiing & snow boarding are about 25 minutes away at Sugar Mountain. Use four wheel or all wheel drive in winter.
The Linville Gorge Wilderness Area, adjacent to the neighborhood, is known as the Grand Canyon of the East and holds spectacular scenery. Table Rock Road, a forest road on the edge of the neighborhood, leads to numerous trail heads for amazing hikes to Sitting Bear, Hawksbill, Table Rock and the Chimneys. The forest road Old Highway 105, along the west rim of the Gorge, provides access to numerous trails and the magnificent Wiseman's view overlook, which has paved access suitable for walker & wheel chair. Vehicles with good clearance are recommended for gravel roads that the Forest Service maintains as they may have ruts.
Beyond the cabin, Grandfather Mountain, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Roan Mountain, Mount Mitchell, and Lake James make up your outdoor playground. Blowing Rock, Boone and Asheville are cultural, dining and shopping destinations. A Blue Ridge Parkway cruise, either north or south, has many scenic overlooks for picnics & hiking trails along the way.
This is my happy place. I hope it will also be yours!

What makes this property unique
Blue Ridge Journeys provides a rich experience in southern Appalachia that you will treasure. Enjoy every comfort and beauty at the cabin and every journey to your next adventure!
Biodiversity in this area is some of the richest in the world. The mountains here are older than the Himalayas and have worn down over eons of time. Rare and infrequent wildflowers and plants are a joy to observe and learn about. Bring your telescope if you like to view the stars. The sky is dark and the Milky Way can be seen running directly over the cabin on a clear night.
Relax at the patio fire pit or in the hot tub. Grill your favorites for dining on the upper deck. The light filled cabin has a mountain winter view and a year round view of forest and sky through the great room's cathedral windows. Local photography and art, hard wood floors and charming decor and comfortable furniture create an ambiance of relaxation and pleasure.
Mountain peaks, waterfalls, rivers and lakes surround this area. In addition to the scenic beauty and adventuring opportunities of hiking, exploring, skiing and snowboarding, there are many culturally based activities. Art venues include Penland School of Arts & Crafts, the Southern Highland Craft Guild, & the Benjamin F. Long, IV fresco at the local Crossnore School. Live music may be enjoyed at various local venues.
The forest is home to many wildlife species, who are shy of humans but may be seen in their habitat. In the evening you may hear owls courting each other. In winter, tracks are visible in the snow where a fox sauntered across a road and into the woods. Deer are commonly seen on the Blue Ridge Parkway in the evenings, when they like to graze. Bear sightings are very rare. Bears are afraid of people and typically run away if they see us, but please be aware that they can become a real nuisance if human food or garbage is left outside or in cars.
