About this property
A Large Country House, perfect for friends & family gatherings.
Situated in the beautiful and picturesque Wye Valley, Abernant House has elegant and comfortable accommodation for up to 18 people.
This impressive Edwardian country house has three spacious reception rooms including a comfortable drawing room, with Bechstein concert standard grand piano, library and an oak-panelled TV room.
The large kitchen, with a four-oven Aga, and dining room at the centre of the house are warm, inviting and great for entertaining. The dining room table seats 14, making it the perfect setting for a special celebration.
There are seven bedrooms, five of them very large with super king-sized double beds, along with two smaller twin rooms. The master bedroom has its own private balcony looking over the treetops towards the River Wye, and three other bedrooms also have balconies overlooking the garden and with stunning views down the Wye valley.
Standing in glorious mature gardens and some five-and-a-half acres intersected by the Nant stream and sweeping down to the River Wye, the house looks east across the valley to the fabled Aberedw Rocks.
The garden is flat alongside the house and slopes down to the banks of the Nant and the Wye, on which there is a private stone beach with listed fishing rights for guests. The garden has a swing on a giant copper beech tree and a stone barbecue shaded by its branches; perfect for summer garden parties and alfresco dining.
The house is only four miles from the market town of Builth Wells, location of the Royal Welsh Showground. Hay-on-Wye, world-famous for its array of book shops and the renowned Hay Literary Festival, is within a 20-minute drive, as is the cathedral county town of Brecon.
The surrounding countryside is some of the most beautiful in the Welsh Borders, with the stunning landscapes of both the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons in easy reach. There are so many things to do in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty: walking, cycling, mountain biking, canoeing, horse riding and pony trekking. The area is famous for its salmon and trout fishing.
During high season (July and August) our minimum stay is seven nights, running from Friday to Friday.
Abernant House has an intriguing history. The previous owner’s grandfather was Lord Caccia who was in the diplomatic service from the 1930s and then ambassador to the USA during the 1960s. He retired to be Provost of Eton College from 1970 to 1977.
Harold Caccia's father was Antonio Caccia, who was translator at the Treaty of Versailles. A rare copy of the Treaty was found in the house about 10 years ago!
