About this property
The Gaggia family House - 6 to 8 people Casale Monticchio17th century farmhouse
Andrew & Hugues have been restoring this old Umbrian farm house since 2002. The apartments and guesthouses reflect a ‘home’ as opposed to a rental property, each is unique in design and furnishings. This 180sqm house is made up from the main part of the Gaggia family home and has 3 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and can host up to 8 people. It has a South facing private terrace and there is a 20 by 5 meters swimming pool shared with the other units.
Unusually for an Umbrian Farm house, the main family room was on the ground floor. The key focal point was the large fireplace which had two bench seats within its structure. Sadly it was severely damaged in the past but we made it a priority while restoring the property.
The largest alteration required was to create a new staircase which we did using a stable at the back of the house which has now given us access from both sides of the house.
Interesting point: The chandelier in the staircase hall was found in a local junkshop and given to us by a close friend. When Hugues’ brother was visiting he let out a scream when he saw it. It transpired to be an almost perfect copy of the one in his favourite painting. The Arnolfini Portrait ( 1434) by the Dutch artist Jan van Eyck.

About the host
Hosted by Andrew Fielder & Hugues Beranger
Andrew originally trained as a furniture designer/maker and then studied art/architecture. Hugues is the linguist whose interests include cooking and history.
We should state that Monticchio is our permanent home and feel extremely lucky to live in such a wounderful place and enjoy sharing it with our guests.
Having bought the property and become involved in the local community we realise the responsibility we have taken on in restoring Monticchio. It will take many years to complete all the works but the friends we have made on this journey so far, prove that it is a worthwhile road to follow.
Also at Monticchio is: 3 cats Luna, Sybille and Dora, plus Timo and Picco the two donkeys, and a horse Lambada

Why they chose this property
Casale Monticchio is incredibly peaceful. When we started the restoration of the property , we had to have for the building permit a day and a night survey done to check the 'noise' for the building permit and the result was that during the night Monticchio was the more silent place you can get on ...earth!
One of the important thing as well is that there is almost no direct light pollution at Monticchio and we and our guests are to see enjoy a full starry sky at night.
Our aim while renovating, was that each apartment /house would have its own individual character, a place where our guests would look forward to returning to after a long day of exploring or lying by the pool.
They are furnished with special pieces we have collected over a long period of time and each object has a story attached to it, which we are always happy to share.
We always encourage guests to tell us if they feel something is missing or if there is a way we could improve the accommodation.

What makes this property unique
There is a 20m x 5m infinity pool shared between our guest and friends. It sets away from the houses and apartments and the large terrace have a view of the valley with the river and the hill covered with wood.
All the apartments have Wi-Fi and there is a separate laundry room for guests to use.
