About this property
Cabin on bluff of Big Sioux River with rushing waters of the Klondike Dam below.
Watch the bountiful wildlife and the seasons change on the Big Sioux River while listening to the water flowing over the Klondike Dam from the large deck, lower level porch or new 7 person hot tub. The exterior to this home resembles a rustic cabin in the woods but is far from rustic once you enter the front door and see the modern amenities. Most of this home is constructed from reclaimed lumber from the 1900s. Much of the wood is Southern Yellow pine with the Great Room constructed from reclaimed 2 x 6s. The Great Room on the main level overlooks the Big Sioux River through 2 large windows and a sliding glass door to an expansive covered balcony. The cabinets were hand made for the home from reclaimed lumber but the granite countertops offer elegance as well.
The main floor has a full kitchen, one bedroom and one full bathroom. It also has a cozy gas heater. The dining area has a large table for family card games, or just relaxing with your morning coffee looking out the large windows.
The lower level is a walkout with nine foot ceilings that gives it an open feel. There is two bedrooms, a bath, a laundry room and a family room with another cozy gas heater with remote thermostats. The entire lower level is completed in knotty pine with log style furniture to complement the rustic feel. It also offers a large TV, pull out queen sofa sleeper and electric recliner to enjoy a little down time watching that football game or movies or finish that great novel. There is a large log table here also to play cards, games or complete crossword puzzles. There is also a laundry room with Samsung washer and dryer. This level has a door which leads to a large covered patio, landscaped yard, and new hot tub! The river is less than 50 yards in front of this exit, but one will not be able to access the river from the home due to a very steep incline so the land is left natural with trees, tall grass and wild flowers. You can access the river though, one block away at the historical Klondike dam site which now is closed to traffic, but offers a large bridge to fish from. Kayaks also enter and exit at this point for a beautiful experience down the Big Sioux River.
Fishing - Iowa or SD fishing license
Relaxing – you won’t need a sound machine or fan for white noise here. Just sleep with the windows open and hear the sound of the babbling waterfalls below.
History The Klondike Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, and given the #75000696. Little remains of the Klondike Mill except an old stone wall and a few artifacts from the historical structure. It is located on the Iowa side of the dam where a bridge spans the Big Sioux River, just beneath the public access parking area.
Kayak or Canoe There is a loading/exiting area approx. one block from the house where one can take the scenic 3.5 mile ride to Canton or exit from the up-river trail from Sioux Falls. The Canton trek is rated as one of the best with steep canyon sidewalls.
Bird-Animal watch Perfect area to just sit on the porch and watch. Bald Eagles and deer are a daily site in this area. In addition, there is a wealth of animal life on the waters of small South Dakota lakes, rivers, and creeks, including geese, ducks, pelicans, great blue heron, egrets, hawks, owls, perching birds, deer, raccoons, and beaver. Eagles, fox, and coyote are also sometimes spotted.
Lake Pahoja Recreation Area 2.5 miles west on Highway 276 has something for everyone! It is open year-round and offers a variety of recreation activities such as ice fishing, hunting, biking, bird watching, canoeing, frisbee golf, outdoor basketball court plus a whole lot more. All of the facilities have been made handicapped accessible along with the 1 1/3 mile asphalt hiking/biking trail along the north shore. A 3 2/3 mile hiking trail encircles the lake for the nature and exercise enthusiasts. At the northeast end of the lake there is a 350' x 100' swimming beach and an adjoining comfort station for those interested in a little sun and fun! $5 daily fee.

Everything was great!! My father-in-law immediately turned on his radio on the deck overlooking the river. Very comfortable and cozy house. Highly recommend!
Beautiful place and surroundings (even on some very cold days). Your home is very cozy and comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay on the Big Sioux and would recommend it to friends and family.
This cabin was perfect! The amenities were abundant, views were breathtaking and sunsets stunning. From the geese, to the Eagles and cardinals and even the squirrels we had lots of entertainment. Thank you for sharing this beautiful cabin with us . We will be back!!
Beautiful location, saw a bald eagles, squirrels, ducks and Canadian geese. The Sioux river creates a rushing water cascade heard from the porch. Loved the electric fireplace kept the place nice and cozy in the winter time. Went to the stensland dairy self pay store and bought fresh ice cream, cheese curds and canned goods. Also, had lunch at calico skies winery and had wine tasting. Big garage we could park our F250 in very comfortably. Easy check in with keypad. Loved relaxing in the large hot tub on the lower porch area. Comfortable bed and plenty of room. Appreciated the WiFi and cable TV. Kitchen very nice my husband loved the very non stick pans! Nice large fridge.
Host was very prompt with replies to questions. Great location! Loved the view of the river from the hot tub. Nice short walk to the river bridge, beautiful.House had everything we needed, loved the large dining table. Worked perfect for out group of 7 women.Would love to stay here again!
A lovely space to share time with family! Plenty of space for a family of 7! Lots of games and a large coffee table to gather around while playing them, while nearby a fire burns merrily in the fireplace. Time was also taken to just relax and read or work on a project. A nice kitchen to prepare a meal in, with chairs at the counter so my kids and I could visit while I cooked. As soon as one steps out the back covered porch, the sound of water running over the dam in the river below draws you to the porch rail where there is a lovely overlook. We spotted geese and an eagle flying over just as the sun was setting one evening. We got plenty of exercise outside despite the less than optimum weather. The old bridge was worth the walk- very neat! We visited the nearby dairy to get some ice cream-yummy!, and a nearby lake as well, that had walking trails- paved! It was an easy short 20-25 minute drive to Sioux Falls. And last but not least- a large hottub to relax in at day’s end. All in all a wonderful time- my family said- this was the way to go!
My fiancée and I stayed here for a weekend getaway. It was amazing! We had such a wonderful time that we are looking forward to staying here again in the future.
Beautiful cabin with relaxing view of the river. The perfect space for gathering with friends to kick back and relax on the deck, inside while playing games, or in the hot tub. Felt like a secluded resort! Great communication with the hosts.
My husband and I work full time. He is a home inspector and I'm a Certified Nurse Midwife at Sanford hospital. We love the outdoors. We like to fish, hike, bike, garden, camp and explore small towns for their local treasures in the summer. In the winter, we love to snowmobile, hike, ski and sit around a warm fireplace relaxing. This cabin offers all of this for us - and will be our retirement heaven. Until then - we decided to share our little treasure with everyone who enjoys these same activities.
Why they chose this property
We retired from the military after twenty years and settled down on an acreage in Sioux Falls, SD. We love Sioux Falls, but the city has completely grown all around us. After the city council approved a tall apartment building to be built along our property line - I started looking for a new home for us in the country. I saw this property listed on Craigslist - and thought it was a scam. I could not believe that there could be any home so rustic and beautifully built with 100 year old reclaimed barn wood that sat in front of a river, embracing nature, and yet so close to Sioux Falls. I was so surprised when I heard back from the realtor that this place was in fact not a scam, but a reality. We knew the minute that we saw it, that we had to have it. Now we are excitingly finding the things to see and do in the area, and are constantly amazed at all the opportunities found.
What makes this property unique
This cabin is a perfect set up for staying in - relaxing, fishing, hiking, kayaking and spending quality time with those one loves. Yet it is also a perfect set up for going out. Within miles is the Grand Falls Casino, Canton wineries, the Canton Barn, Larchwood restaurants and bars, Golf courses and Lake Pahoja Recreation Area which is a great park for swimming, boating, paddle boarding, or playing Frisbee golf or basketball. We have enjoyed biking the country roads, and continue to be amazed at the beauty of the area.
