Our London vacation

The London mansion was perfect for our family. We were a large group, but the location, the beautiful yard, and the amazing home worked wonderfully. The host was welcoming and flexible. I highly recommend this home for a VRBO stay.

London Garden Oasis

The house is everything described and more. We had a lovely stay with our whole family. The house is very well set-up with all your need to cook, relax and explore London. The tube is a very short walk and from there it is an easy ride to anywhere in the city. It was a perfect trip.

Beautiful, comfortable home in great neighborhood

The house was spacious and comfortable and exactly as pictured on VRBO. Decor, design and art were beautiful. As a family of four (2 adults and 2 teenagers), everyone had plenty of space to themselves, and spent a lot of time together in the bright, modern kitchen and cozy family room. The backyard and garden were perfect to relax in each evening. East Putney is a peaceful and calm neighborhood. Everything you need is within a leisurely seven to ten minute walk: three grocery stores, charming restaurants, pharmacy, and the East Putney Tube station. Access to Central London is quick and easy via the District line. We did not have a car, and felt no need for one. The owners were very welcoming and gracious. House information was clear and sent to us well in advance of our stay. We didn’t meet the owners in person, but communicated efficiently through text and VRBO emails. They were responsive and quick to answer our questions, and arranged for someone to meet us with keys and show us around the house. Check-in was a breeze. We’d stay here again in a heartbeat.

All was well until we checked out.

This is a hard review to write as our stay was fabulous. The property is just as described, beautifully furnished with eclectic touches and nice rooms. The space was accommodating and comfortable and conveniently located about a 5min walk to a train station that will easily take you into the Major city of London. The neighborhood is pleasant with many pubs, eateries and markets at your disposal. We came in a early from our flight and where allowed to come in and leave our luggage in the home while the cleaning was finished. There was a bit of an awkward moment when the host requested to come in and get something from the home. We broke a drinking glass and I made sure to leave it on the counter and let the host know when we checked out. This was the first stop in our trip and it took a couple of days before I received a response from the host, Flora. She started her message accusing me of sneaking extra people into the unit, saying that she knows I had children there and that I never disclosed to her that I would have children. She then said that toys were brought in and out of rooms they didn’t belong in. Then she says that playdoh was left all over her carpets leaving them permanently damaged. From this she moved on to her couch, showing us a huge dark stain and saying we’ve done it. Then she said we broke a track in her curtain treatments upstairs. From there she asked if anyone had dyed their hair because there were permanent stains on her tub and shower. She sent pictures of the couch, tub. Fast forward a couple of days and she’s quoted us about $700 for the damages which were charged. When I responded to Flora I began by asking her to review our conversations prior to booking and the official booking request itself where I clearly stated I was traveling in a party of 7 people, two of which where children. This is the first time we use VRBO but have stayed in many rentals as we travel often, in fact the remainder of our trip which included stops is Rome and Italy were with rentals and we received great reviews from our hosts. We’ve never been accused of damages or defrauding the host by sneaking people in. When we stay in rentals the host will let you know when things are not to be touched and we are respectful of those rules. We were never told toys were not to be touched. We never once used the tub and definitely didn’t stain the couch or break the curtains. We will pay for cleaning of the carpet but every other accusation is ridiculous.

It is always so difficult when guests accidentally damage a property. When you have a large number of guests (7) staying in a home, particularly with young children, there are sometimes damages that guests might not notice e.g. like playdoh ground in to the carpet, stains on sofas and sticky sweets stuck behind sofa cushions. I understand it is upsetting when the resulting cost for damages need to be covered. The costs had nothing to do with the number of guests (children or otherwise) and were transparently broken down in detail, and the cleaning company provided so that the guest could check and verify the costs themselves. Sadly getting permanent stains off a natural stone bath is expensive. Guests were not charged for all the marks left on newly painted bedroom walls. We have not made any accusation of defrauding at all, and we are saddened by the guests’ accusatory response to the damages their party caused in our family home. We are an honest, open family and have been VRBO hosts for 10 years and never experienced anything like this. Out of good will, I did not leave a review of the guest.
