In the heart of Saxony lies the major district town of Wurzen, one of the oldest places in the state. A highlight of the town is the St. Mary's Cathedral, which is often used for services, weddings, and concerts. Also known as the Ringelnatz Town, it has a meticulously restored old town with picturesque alleys, buildings, and squares. The town centre hosts many attractive and individual shops with a diverse range of products. The impressive mill towers dominate the entire townscape and are considered the town's secret symbol.

The Ecumenical Jacob Pilgrimage Route and the Via Regia, one of the oldest and longest land connections between Eastern and Western Europe, pass through Wurzen. Cycle and walking paths run through the town, and especially the cycle routes are being continuously expanded. Between enchanting floodplain landscapes flows the Mulde. Adjacent forests as well as many allotment gardens surround Wurzen like a green belt.
