About this property
Lowick House - C18th Lakeland opulence
A luxurious C18th house set in its own private grounds in the quiet village of Lowick just south of Coniston Water. With its magnificent garden, Lowick House is a unique property full of of eccentricity, old world charm and all modern comforts.
Nestled in the stunning Crake valley with stunning views of the surrounding fields: sheep and lambs in the Spring and young cattle later in the year, it is a truly marvellous relaxing place to stay.
This large elegantly furnished property is set in an extensive mature garden and has two bridges leading across a large beck to a wooded area full of wild flowers, birds, hedgehogs and numerous insects. We have nuthatches, tree creepers, herons, an occasional woodpecker as well as all the more common birds. Peacefully situated just off the village green and with open access to Lowick Common, you can enjoy fantastic walks over the fell to the Beacon with its 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains and sea. Early morning is the time to spot the roe deer, birds of prey and sometimes the odd hare.
This period house is beautiful and each room has its own individual style with traditional decor and you will find trompe l’oeil features throughout. The large kitchen has a family dining table and is equipped with everything you could possibly need. The adjoining washhouse has a large storage area for boots, bikes, etc and the washing machine, dryer, and American style fridge freezer are in here.
There is a cosy snug with a large sofa, love seat and a smart TV. An elegant formal dining room with seating for 12 and magnificent chandelier leads into the spacious oak panelled lounge with super views out onto the garden. A special place to relax and enjoy a G&T and listen to music. There is a wet room with bath and toilet on the ground floor.
Upstairs are five bedrooms, two doubles, a delightful super-king with fitted wardrobe and vanity unit the length of the room plus and a single bedroom. All have window seats and four bedrooms enjoy fabulous views of the garden and all have window seats The delightful twin room opposite the large bathroom with walk in shower looks out towards the mountain ‘Coniston Old Man’ There is a third bathroom with roll top bath. Outside you can enjoy the large garden with outdoor dining furniture, barbecue and fire pit.
The village is quiet and peaceful yet we are only a short drive from many of the major tourist attractions of the the Southern Lakes: Beatrix Potter, Lakeland Motor Museum, Lakeside & Haverthwaite Steam Railway, Windermere Steam Museum to name just a few.
Coniston Water is just 2 miles away and there is easy access to the lakeshore beaches for swimming and picnics.
We have two pubs within walking distance - the Farmers Arms and the Red Lion plus a wonderful pub restaurant - The Manor at Oxen Park, a short drive away in the next valley. Ten minutes by car is the lovely festival market town of Ulverston with its individual shops, tearooms, restaurants and a traditional supermarket.
Three miles away in Greenodd is a traditional butchers, bakehouse cafe, ice cream parlour, wine merchant, fish and chip shop and for the budding farmers a John Deere outlet with the best selection of toys for young and old alike.
