About the host
Hosted by Joanne Higgs
Hi, I’m Joanne, a Dorset-based host, nature lover and a self-confessed coffee snob. I’ve poured a lot of heart into restoring our Victorian stone cottage, "Our Place in Portland," and it’s been a joy to share it with guests from all over. I love hosting because it’s about more than just handing over keys, it’s about creating a space where people can truly unwind, explore and make memories.
We live locally, so we’re on hand if you need tips or recommendations, or to point you toward the best almond croissant. We genuinely want your stay to feel like a home away from home (but with better views!).

Why they chose this property
We chose Portland because it’s wild, dramatic and completely captivating, and a little different from the usual seaside spots. The community is welcoming, the views are epic, and the sea air does something magical to the soul (and the sleep!). Whether it's a windswept walk on Chesil Beach, a lazy paddleboard on a still morning, or a post-sauna stretch on the cliffs, there’s something special about this place that keeps drawing people back.
What makes this property unique
Our cottage isn’t just a place to sleep, it’s a warm, welcoming retreat with soul. Built in 1870 and full of character, it’s been lovingly restored to blend old-world charm with modern comfort (yes to sea views, no to creaky plumbing!). Set over three floors, with a stunning loft bedroom overlooking Lyme Bay, it’s the kind of place where you wake up, peek out the window, and think: “Right then, beach walk before coffee?”
We’re just a 6-minute stroll from Chesil Beach and the South West Coast Path, which means coastal adventures are quite literally on the doorstep. Whether you're into hiking, sailing, wild swimming, bird watching, or just pottering around with a good book, there’s something for everyone.
We’ve kept things thoughtful, with a well-stocked kitchen for nights in, a cosy sitting room with board games and Fire TV, an enclosed garden for drying wetsuits or sipping wine, and fast Wi-Fi if you must check your emails. We’re also proudly dog-friendly, because your four-legged family members deserve a seaside break too.
Oh, and did we mention the loft views? They’ve been known to cause a happy sigh or two.
