Midway between the market town of Aylsham and the coastal resort of Cromer, Hanworth is a historic North Norfolk village with the largest enclosed common in England. Surrounded by fertile farmland and close to a fine choice of traditional inns and upmarket eateries, it’s a peaceful spot for a self-catering break, yet only a short drive from the sandy beach at Cromer. If you’re up for a challenge take the stairs to the top of the town’s church tower for spectacular views of the promenade and pier, or stroll along the sands to Sheringham, an equally attractive resort 5 miles away. En route to the coast, call in at Felbrigg Hall (5.5 miles), and explore 520 acres of woodland and waymarked trails. In the opposite direction, the Blickling Estate (7 miles) is another National Trust property with gorgeous grounds; combine a visit with a stroll around Aylsham. One of two neighbouring brick-and-flint cottages, this postcard-pretty property is full of period features including low ceilings, exposed beams and a huge inglenook fireplace. Inviting at any time of year, it offers contemporary country living with a lovely conservatory-style entrance leading into a stylish kitchen complete with an AGA and a striking feature wall.
