Black Bear Lodge gives an updated twist to rustic West Virginia living, You will fall in love with the warm mountain views and quiet rustle of the leaves.
Benedict Haid Farm is a family-owned business open, mostly for weddings, for about 40 years. It features a large, historic 1860s hand-hewn log home on 400-acres, adjoining 10,000 acres of undeveloped corporate property. This is a nice place to get away for a while, or host a small retreat. The nearest commercial building is six miles away. :-)
During your stay pick any of the three large bedrooms with premium queen-sized beds, private bedroom decks, and equipped with its own private bathrooms. The master bedroom enjoys the jetted tub for relaxing all evening long. The property provides spacious parking, ample firewood, a complimentary gas grill with unlimited gas, and free use of electric car recharge station.
There is walking access to a pond, Margaret's Pond, roughly .8 mile from Black Bear Lodge. You will have access to the surrounding woods, Margaret's Pond, and the nearby farmland if you want to make such arrangements. If you are interested in holding an event, please look up our website and contact us. The newly-renovated barn is available to be rented for events, as well. It was renovated using logs from historic log cabins formerly located in the South Hills section of Charleston.
Steve and Lee, the caretakers for the Benedict Haid Farm, live on the property and can be contacted as needed.
Dutch Ridge is a largely undeveloped area and contains some of the highest hills and mountains in this part of West Virginia. Hope you visit the Black Bear Lodge, a starting point for a rustic, scenic and beautiful vacation in the hills of West Virginia.

While this was remote, the location is quite amazing! Perched on the top of a hill where you can see both the sun rise and sun set was the most beautiful setting. The rustic nature of the home was super cool with the custom chairs/benches adding to the charm. We had no real issues during our stay. The property manager was a super sweet person to talk to and provided some local tips.
This was a wonderful stay and so peaceful. We had three deer visit us our first evening. We sat outside on the decks and watched the stars. We hope to return for a longer stay!
My favorite place to stay, 2nd time staying and never disappoints. Will be back soon! Perfect hideaway from life. Gives the word Quiet a whole new meaning, the Stars a whole new appreciation. A piece of Perfection. Gratitude
The property is beautiful, it does not disappoint. The cabin is a perfect mix of old and new, it had everything we needed to enjoy the weekend. I will definitely stay there again when in the area. Check in was easy and convenient. The property manager checked in to see if we needed anything and was a great source of information.
We loved everything about this place. So beautiful and quiet, and a place to be away from it all. We brought in a cooler with food and had everything we needed. Everyone slept great, too.
This is a beautiful property off of the beaten path, literally. No cable or wifi, so perfect to get away in peace! House was nice and cozy. Caretaker was very responsive. Closest grocery, Kroger, in Elkview, along with Tudor's Biscuit and Hen's and Heifer's. Enjoyed beautiful sunrise and sunset every day with watching the deer roam the fields. Worth the drive to New River Gorge Bridge for whitewater rafting. The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine Tour and the Tamarack Craft Center was also a good trip.
We have been avid VRBO travelers for over five years and this property is the most beautiful and unique. The home is reconstructed civil war era barn wood with updated kitchen and baths. It sits atop a mountain the the morning sun rise from the the front porch is amazing. The sunset from the back decks is equal in beauty. The acreage is mowed and very walkable. The interior is clean, comfortable and very well theme-decorated. We would recommend checking in by dusk and carry your foods and essentials for the first day, as the roadtrip up and down the mountain is about an hour quests who are not familiar with surroundings. The property hosts are very responsive. This is a must stay.

Thank you for coming, you're welcome back anytime Scottene.
Great location for my 2 sisters and our husbands to meet for a weekend get away since we were coming from OH, TN, & VA. The cabin and surrounding area are beautiful. We had plenty of room…nice that each bedroom had its own bathroom. Kitchen was well stocked with dishes, cookware, dish cloths/towels…everything you need. You will need to take things like zip lock bags, foil, plastic wrap. We cooked all our meals and had a relaxing weekend of good food and game time. The only minor negative is that I had not received cabin access info from the host by Friday morning. I messaged him and he called me and gave me the info I needed and also to let me know the caretaker would stop by after we arrived to make sure everything was in good order. Steve, the caretaker made us feel very welcome and gave us a lot of history of the area. We all agreed that we will definitely plan another stay in the future.
Myself and three friends stayed here for the weekend. The location is lovely and very clean. It is, however, at the top of a long and windy road. If you are not used to driving in the hills, it may be daunting, but we got used to it.
There were mutiple, old barnwood cabins on the property and would make a lovely location for a wedding.
The caretakers onsite took great care of us, and were responsive to our messages.
We brought groceries with us, but be aware, there are no groceries of any kind on site. If you want it, bring it with you, including coffee, spices and condiments, etc.
There were challenging trails to walk, and beautiful scenery everywhere and wildlife to enjoy.
There is NO WiFi and wireless service is spotty, so it is a great place to unwind.
We enjoyed ourselves very much and would recommend.
The 4 of us are life long friends that live in different states, and wanted to spent a weekend together. The Benedict Haid Black Bear cabin was the perfect "get away" location - clean, and well appointed, and the property and cabin views were gorgeous. The large building and house up the road looked to be perfect for a wedding. I highly recommend the Benedict Haid property.
Such a sweet place to get away, and get away you do! Once you have made the interesting trek up you won't want to leave, because it wraps you in comfort and beauty, with a gorgeous spacious structure built with integrity, beautiful grounds, and the backdrop of the West Virginia mountains. There are beautiful sleighbeds in each room, a lovely kitchen, interesting art pieces and a large inviting fireplace. Watch the sun set on the back bedroom deck, and rise on the front porch and enjoy watching the deer and birds. This property is close to hiking trails and Charleston is nearby with some interesting looking shops and restaurants. Upon arrival Steven was welcoming and helpful in answering questions, and the owner Emmett was quick to respond to inquiries as well. Highly recommended...

Disappointed with no wifi, and worst jacuzzi experience.

The property was just as it appeared online. Be prepared to take your time driving up the mountain, the roads are narrow and there are several blind curves. Once on top the views are great! about 20 to 30 minute drive into Charlottesville if you want to get into the city. Gas grill and everything you need to prepare meals on site. We did discover a small pizza place called Lola's. Highly recommend. We plan on going back some time to view the fall color.
Very nice property on top of the hill with beautiful views in any direction. It was very relaxing watching the wildlife from the porch. The house was very clean and accommodating. Even though we were out on the motorcycles most of the day we enjoyed every moment at the house. The caretaker of the property was very helpful and polite. We would definitely stay there again if we were going to be in the area and would recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice and quiet house with a view!
Our stay was wonderful. It is quiet and peaceful out in the country. It's a little ways off the beaten path. It's probably not necessary but I would recommend AWD if you are staying when snow is on the ground. House was very clean and check in was a breeze. The pictures were spot on. The EV charger attached to the nearby garage is a nice perk. Only complaint was that there was no coffee for the kuerig or regular coffee pot. If you are a coffee drinker then bring your own beans. I would recommend this if you are staying in the area.
We planned a last minute get away after Christmas. A few days before we left there was an unexpected snow storm. There were some great hills on the farm for sledding. So much fun. The caretaker was very accommodating. Due to an issue with the storm the satellite service was not working properly. The owner instructed him to purchase a new smart TV. He did and installed it the next day. Great service. The cabin offers peace and quite at a good price. Lots of room to move around-there were 6 adults-my parents 70 years old, me and my husband 46 and two 19 year olds. Loves that there were 3 separate full bathrooms and a roomy kitchen.

Had an absolutely extraordinary time at Benedict Haid farm. The setting and amenities are top notch. 360 degree views of the mountains and forests. So peaceful and quiet. Not too far a drive from Charleston and other WV outdoor activities. The picturesque front porch and also side and back decks. The well maintained grounds. The storybook historic cabin with modern interior updates all so well maintained. Just absolutely fantastic. We will definitely be back and likely to bring more family and friends and potentially rent the other accommodations on the spacious property as well.
The property is beautiful and exactly as described!

I purchased the Benedict Haid Farm property in 1986 and oversaw the restoration of the Haid House and grounds. The house has been a labor of love for most of my adult life. I am proud of what we offer and the positive comments received.
Why they chose this property
The Benedict Haid Farm offers a rare opportunity to spend time in an authentic, well-maintained log home, modified to provide comfort and utility on a private mountain setting just 20 (paved) miles from three interstate highways.
What makes this property unique
Panoramic mountaintop vista with three decks and a living room fireplace.
