About this property
Brush Mtn Wilderness Lodge adjoining Jefferson Nat'l Forest 6.5 mi. to VT Campus
Originally constructed in 1992, this 2,166 foot square Cape Cod style lodge has 4 bedrooms, (2 queen beds, 1 king bed and 1 memory foam sofa bed), 4 bathrooms and a modern kitchen. Sofas and inflatable mattresses are available for extra guests if requested. Propane fuels the heating system and stove. Exposed natural timber and stone interior blend with all natural hardwood floors providing guests with the truest sense of modern cabin life. Although guests will find themselves totally isolated in this woods retreat, the lodge offers Dish TV and WiFi.
Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg are the two primary draws to the area in addition to the multitude of experiences offered in the variety outdoor activities. Canoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking, fishing, hunting and eco-touring through the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains represent a small sampling of things to enjoy in the area.
For the outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, the lodge offers remarkable opportunities for engaging with wildlife. Whether or not guests prefer a more passive "porch loving" approach or the "hiking experience," the lodge and surrounding acreage will be sure to satisfy everyone's needs. In the immediate vicinity, guests may spend time on any of the quiet covered porch areas, each with a different perspective and view of the adjacent gardens and forest. The front porch swing and surrounding decks overlook the forest and small native plant meadow which is a favorite spot for flocks of wild turkeys as well as a suite of native songbirds. The adjacent side porch overlooks a quaint cottage garden and koi pond, offering an assortment of colorful butterflies and insects in warm months. The two third-floor bedrooms have adjoining back balconies offering commanding views of the Jefferson National Forest-- a perfect spot for viewing wildlife and finding complete solitude.
Stunning views of the Jefferson National Forest are possible year round from both of the third floor bedrooms as well as from the exterior adjoining porches. Guests often enjoy the early morning hours for bird watching and the early evening hours for listening to the choruses of frogs, toads and owls. For the Jefferson National Forest, the U.S.D.A. Forest Service reports more than 175 species of songbirds, owls, hawks and falcons as well as an assortment of frogs and toads to include American Toads, Fowler's Toads, Northern Spring Peepers, Gray Tree Frogs, Upland Chorus Frogs, Green and Wood Frogs and Pickerel Frogs.

About the host
Hosted by Buck Cox (Owner/Host) & Lori Blanc (Co-Host)
Buck grew up in Fredericksburg, VA, but moved to Blacksburg to attend Virginia Tech. He has lived here ever since. He is a three-time environmental engineering graduate of VT, and although his business required frequent travel to Florida and Texas over the years, he has always loved returning home to Blacksburg. There is no better place on earth! Buck enjoys encouraging others to experience the natural beauty of the ancient Appalachian Mountains.
Why they chose this property
Brush Mountain Lodge (BML) sits adjacent to the Jefferson National Forest and directly across the road from the ThunderCroft conservation easement, a 200-acre property where Buck is dedicated to ecological restoration and active conservation management. The lodge provides immediate access to the National Forest in a setting that every nature lover will greatly appreciate. Further, BML is 5 miles from downtown Blacksburg and Virginia Tech (and a 7.9 mile drive to Lane Stadium), making this property an excellent choice for access to the large variety of activities associated with both the Town and area colleges. Access to outdoor activities abound in the area to include hiking (the Appalachian Trail is only a few away), canoeing and kayaking, wineries, festivals and simply sightseeing to take the the amazing natural beauty of the area.
What makes this property unique
Hikers can leave Brush Mountain Lodge and access a trail to the top of Brush Mountain immediately behind the house (GPS recommended). The solitude at Brush Mountain Lodge provides a tranquil setting for experiencing the wilderness of the Appalachian Mountains in a very intimate way.
