Long before interstates and smartphones, families from Chicago and Minneapolis packed the car and headed north for cool nights, bluegill suppers, and weeks that moved at the pace of the lake. The Birch–Chetac chain was part of that classic summer migration—first by rail to nearby towns, then by highway—feeding a century-long tradition of simple cabins, shared docks, and neighbors you knew by their boat.
Our little Resort and Campground was part of that golden era—built in the 1950s, when cozy, simple cabins were close to the water, mornings started with a thermos and a tackle box, and time moved at the pace of the waves.
We’ve kept that spirit alive. Cabin 1 is a 500 sq. ft. 2 bedroom that sits just steps from the shoreline, where your coffee seems to tastes so much better gazing over the lake.
Inside, you’ll find extremely clean interiors with thoughtful updates for comfort while the vintage layout and charm remains. You’ll love the expansive lake views, and the easy rhythm of a place that hasn’t forgotten why people come here in the first place.
Like many authentic mid-century cabins, ours carry a few unique quirks. This cabin in particular was built to keep transitions safe and step-free between rooms, the original owners designed a gentle, 5-inch slope (we measured) in the living/dining area which joins the other rooms to each other. Be assured the kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom, and sofa area are all very level—One review called it warped, in which it is not. It was an intentional build. They sure did things differently back in the day!
So, if you do have balance issues or vertigo and are concerned with the gradual slope, we have 4 other cabins that are totally level with a charm all of their own.
Our Resort is quiet and quaint, focusing on fishing, relaxing or enjoying the outdoor lake life. Our Resort consists of five cabins total (four right on the water), 4 pontoon rentals, and a small campground where evenings settle into crackling campfires, the hush of the lake and if you’re lucky, the call of the loons too!
If you’re looking for glossy and new, you won’t find it here. If you’re looking for clean, simply updated, historic cabins that are reminiscent of the Northwoods as it was meant to be—simple, friendly, and right on the water—welcome to Cabin 1.
