About this property

NATURE, PRIVACY AND SPECTACULAR VIEWS AT PYRAMID POINTE

Located at the point of a 100 foot wide gated private island, the house was built in 1986 and, as the name implies and the pictures show, is shaped like a pyramid. No where else in the State of South Carolina is there available for rent a home with the surroundings, privacy and the unspoiled view afforded by Pyramid Pointe. You will need binoculars to see any other home or person from the interior, decks or porch. No one will walk or drive by. During the busiest season you will share 2 miles of beach with 30 people and the rest of the year, often, with no one.

The home is four stories in height from ground level. It was nestled into the natural environment without cutting any trees and built over a pre civil war cistern. There are 3 bedrooms. The MBR and a full bath occupy the entire top level and is furnished with a king bed. A small deck faces the ocean.

The third level has two bedrooms, each with their own full bath One bedroom has a deck facing the ocean and a king bed, the other has two full beds and a third in the closet.

There is a queen sleeper sofa in the TV area on the main level. A Large deck is accessed from the sitting area and faces the ocean. There is a full bath on the first level, a medium kitchen and a large dining area. A 35 foot covered porch overlooks the Creek and the entire front of the house is glass, facing the ocean. Screens on the porch and decks are not necessary because the bugs don't come there, the height and full time breeze keep them away.

The entry and foyer are paved with bricks harvested from the beach over the years from the homes of the Edingsville settlement destroyed by a hurricane in the 1800’s. You will see a map of the island as it existed at that time as you climb the stairs to the second living level. From the entryway level you can see up the stairwell all the way to the fourth floor.

The first level contains the TV sitting area (42” plasma) , the den and a spacious dining room which is separated from the kitchen by a long bar. The bar and dining room table were made from lumber scavenged also from the old Edingsville settlement. The mantle, side table and coffee table are made from driftwood taken from the beach. The covered porch is accessed from the dining room and faces north towards the creek and Frampton inlet.

The covered porch has a hanging swing and two rocking chairs as well as a built in dining table and chairs. A cable rail system is used to minimize disruption of the view.

The home has over 600 square feet of windows, almost all facing the ocean. It is constructed of cedar, inside and out. The furnishings are functional, not fancy. It is a beach house designed and furnished for relaxing and carefree use, not a home where you have to shower before sitting down.

An infrared grill and indoor fryer are provided and the kitchen has all normal appliances and conveniences.

It is 3 flights of stairs from the entry door to the master bedroom, 2 to the second floor bedrooms and 1 to the main living level (as with all houses on Edisto). There is a widow’s walk on the roof which is presently unavailable to first time guests.

No long walkway is needed as the dock is 30 feet from the porch. The front of the house is less than 5 feet from the marsh (the decks overhang it) and the porch side about 20 feet. Dolphins are often first spotted by someone washing dishes in the kitchen.

A washer and dryer are in the mechanical room on ground level.

Satellite TV is available downstairs and in the MBR. Each TV has a DVD player. There are no video game machines. Wireless broadband Internet is provided but we are at the “end of the line” and service can be sporadic. There is no land line phone service but At&T and Sprint service is very good and Verizon is tolerable.

This is a traditional "low country" beach house. A beach house, not a home, just a place to stay so you can be in a place where no one else is. It is an architecturally unique, pleasant, comfortable and relaxing home designed to allow maximum enjoyment of the surroundings. You go to a place like this to be outdoors, not in. If you are expecting a home nicer than, or even as nice, as your own then this home will not be suitable for you. It was located here as a means to an end, not the destination itself. The home provides a place from which you can enjoy privacy, nature and the beauty of the natural surroundings. It is not intended to be, nor is it, at all like a beach house in a row of beach houses with manicured lawns lined up in a development. If you love the outdoors, peace and privacy and are willing to give up some comfort to get them, this home will be perfect for you.

Edingsville is technically an island contained within Edisto Island. Edisto has retained the laid back charm that all of the South Carolina beaches once enjoyed. The lack of large scale commercial development, McDonalds, Burger Kings and Wal-Mart’s sets Edisto apart from all other beach resorts in South Carolina

There is a two mile undeveloped beach seen from every part of the house. It is an easy walk or bike ride of approximately 1/2 mile to the beach along private gated roads. If you rented or brought your own kayaks/canoes it is just a couple hundred yards to a beach where you will likely find yourself the only one there.

The house is surrounded 320 degrees by marsh and tidal creeks. Wildlife abounds here. Egrets, gulls, and fiddler crabs are the most obvious but many more fish, crabs and exotic creatures thrive here. It is the “nursery” of the ocean where young are bred and mature before setting out to sea.

THE BOTTOM LINE. If you are looking for a beautiful home surrounded by other beautiful homes within walking distance of a beach full of other people, then rent a home at Kiawah. If you are looking for a place to stay so you can be in a beautiful place, then this home will serve your needs nicely.

You ,must read the details contained in the Rental Agreement prior to booking.

Unbelievable Views from So Many Windows

The owner and all the renter reviews do an excellent job of describing this unique vacation home. Take the time to read everything as while this place was five stars for my husband and me, it isn’t for everyone. The owners description does a fine job of explaining that. Whoever built this home was not your average contractor. He or she put a lot of thought into its layout. I really enjoyed finding all the ways triangles and other geometric shapes were incorporated into the design. Early surveyors only had triangulation to map coasts and it was very important in mapping the coast from Charleston to St. Helena’s Sound. I felt like this house paid homage to that.

Amazing views and seclusion

Nature at its best! Although the house is “very rustic”, the views are worth the stay! We encountered porpoises in the creek, eagle, horseshoe crab, raccoon, and spotted an eagle. Dreamy sleeping on forth level and waking up to a gorgeous sunrise. Hated to leave!

Wonderful

Third time staying here and it won’t be the last. This is not your pastel pristine beach house. This is a well loved home to relax in after a day spent shelling, biking, boating and just enjoying the beauty of Edisto. Wake up early to watch the sunrise. Incredible!

Beautiful Location!

Amazing place to stay if you like to kayak, crab and fish! The sunrises/sunsets were amazing and we saw the dolphins in the creek. Highly recommend kayaking over to the beach, there are so many seashells and my mom found an enormous shark tooth! We even kayaked the long route to the inlet. It is a bit long of a walk to the beach if you have trouble with your legs or are out of shape. Place could definitely use a deep clean coming from we who aren't too picky. This is more like a fisherman's cabin than a beach house, I have friends who would NOT stay here, listing description is accurate! The location is amazing and we all agreed that we would love to come back. Host was very responsive!

What we were looking for

My family had a wonderful stay at Pyramid point - It was just the kind of place we wanted, although it wouldn’t suit everyone. Read the owner’s description of the property before booking it. It describes the place well and you can decide If it’s what you are looking for.

Beautiful Location

Pyramid Point is at a FANTASTIC location!! The views are beautiful and the fishing and crabbing are great! You can tell the house has been enjoyed by many throughout the years. If you’re looking for an immaculate, luxurious home, look elsewhere. But, if you aren’t worried about cleanliness and just want a place to sleep while you spend your time in the beautiful outdoors this is your spot!

A Grown-Up Treehouse in Paradise

We loved our time at Pyramid Pointe so much! The house itself is so interesting -with surprising twists and turns. We loved the bricks used for the entry from the old Edingsville settlement. The views of the ocean and the marsh are nothing short of majestic. We gave ourselves over to the tides and watched the sunrises and moonrises, dolphins swimming by, bald eagles perching in the trees by the house. We found gorgeous shells and sandollars and slept to the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach. Our hearts are restored and we cannot wait to return!!

Nature lover's getaway

The owner did a fine job of painting an accurate picture of what we could expect. If you like more of an authentic/rustic accommodation with privacy, quiet, and beautiful views, then this is the spot! We counted 48 species of birds within walking distance of the house, but many of them were seen just sitting on the large porch. Paddling the tidal river from the house was terrific and the beach was deserted except for the turtle patrols, which was pretty neat. We all had a great visit and would definitely go back!

Great Spot

We loved our stay at Pyramid Point. The kitchen is stocked with everything we needed. The location is amazing, with views unparalleled. Sunrises are an absolute must see from the back porch. If you are looking for a location where you can immerse yourself in nature, and forget about your worries, Hands down - this place fits the bill. The owner is spot on in his description of the property, so take your time to thoroughly read the listing. In our 20+ years of vacationing in South Carolina, this has been our favorite spot, so far. Great location

I booked this house for a guys fishing trip weekend. It did not disappoint. The location of this house is fantastic for fishing whether you want to fish from the dock, boat around in the creeks, or go out to the surf. The house was not the cleanest and it could use some updates and repairs in some areas, but it’s an old marsh house so what can you expect. It didn’t bother us at all. The architecture of this house is pretty wild too, lots of odd little details went into building this place. Overall I would highly recommend this place if you like amazing views and fishing.

Character/Beauty Galore

Magnificent & unique setting in Cowpens surrounded by the natural beauty of the marsh & the ocean. We enjoyed amazing sunsets & moon/sun rises from the covered deck. Bird watching was great with Bald Eagles & Wood Storks hanging out in the treetops. The house is as described(rustic, low country) and could use a deep clean & repairs/ maintenance. The house was furnished nicely & beds were comfortable. One shower was damaged & unusable. Water pressure was variable. As described, this is not a luxurious home, but a very memorable getaway if you appreciate nature. Kayaks were available for use.

Views and wildlife worth the price of admission

Summarization of the properties strength and weaknesses was accurate. I would say rustic, my wife would say dirty-we all have individual expectations. My two boys 7 and 12 could care less and enjoyed beach time, dock time and lots of wildlife. Communication from the owner was excellent. Boat battery didn’t work but the kayaks where used extensively. My kids took home approx 1 million shells and we all loved the location. I don’t know how this home can be saved or restored but happy to have made good family memories

Peaceful

Overall this is a magically peaceful place. Description is accurate. We loved the dolphins in the creek, the views, all the types of shore birds and Pelicans. We even saw sea turtles in the ocean! We paddled to Botany Bay on our paddle boards. The nature is unbeatable. The house was clean, but there were rodents living in the walls/ceiling that would run around and wake us up at night. There was also a strong rodent smell that did seem to get better or we got used to it over time. The AC did not work on the top king-bed bedroom, which we did not need. But if you are planning on using that in the summer you may want to ask about it first. One bathroom has been newly renovated and was our preferred bathroom to use. Otherwise the beauty of the place makes up for the downsides. Also a tip- the ocean has a lot of old oyster beds and some mud in this area. Solid water shoes or old tennis shoes would be good for ocean swimming. Overall if you love nature and solitude this place is wonderful at least once in your life.

Beautiful Edisto

The location is the best in Edisto. The house needs numerous repairs and better cleaning supply’s . The vacuum was horrible no suction after cleaning it out and all. The sinks held water and one shower stall was taped with a bag to help hide damage ( which we were told ) but the shower is leaking on to the porch below so bad we could not use the shower or walk in that area below. Floors below at that spot are soft . AC quit and the owner had someone out that day to fix and was repaired promptly. Very thankful for that. We had a wonderful time regardless of the house conditions . Sadly we will not rent again .

Extraordinary location, property a little worse fon

This property is a perfect haven for nature lovers, set apart from neighbors at the end of a sandy road, surrounded by grassland, with birdsong and the crash of surf on the barrier beach the only sounds. We delighted in the squadrons of pelicans that passed overhead and the dolphins that cruised up and down the tidal river past the dock. There were more than enough kayaks/paddle boards for our party to explore the estuary and reach the beach. Hiking trails at Edisto Beach State Park and Botany Bay are just minutes away. The house itself is a fascinating piece of architecture, with expansive views from the decks across the marsh and out to the open ocean. Visitors must be aware that this exposure has taken a toll on the building, with water damage to all the ceilings and windows obscured by sun and salt. Unfortunately no one had cleaned prior to our arrival (including the prior tenants) so we encountered the amazing amounts of sand that are inevitably tracked in. I recommend taking shoes off at the threshold and going barefoot if possible. The landlord was very apologetic about the cleaning snafu and was responsive to our distress.

Magical Getaway

This was truly one of the best vacations we’ve ever taken. We woke each morning to the sun rising through the oversized windows in the 4th floor bedroom and fell asleep to the moon rise. We happened to be there for the full moon and it was, hands down, the most breathtaking experience watching it rise over the ocean and marsh. The house is private and nestled in a quaint low country community. We took long walks each morning down to the beach and rarely saw another soul. We spent all day on the beach reading and soaking up the sun and felt as if we had it all to ourselves. We sipped coffee from the dock each morning, watching the sunrise and listening to the bird song (no better destination to watch a sunrise). We fished our little hearts out and caught red fish in the creeks and flats, saw dolphins and bird galore, and enjoyed sunset meals from the porch. The bed was comfy. The shower has good pressure. The kitchen is clean. The furniture is comfortable. The views are spectacular. The privacy, peace, and quiet are unmatched. The beaches are stunning. The fishing is plentiful. The nature is abundant and diverse. If you want to disconnect, be with nature, and have a private, unique, comfortable accommodation while you are at it… this is the place for you. Book the trip. You won’t regret it!

Best and worst

This was a very strange experience for us I just want to say even with the issues we had I would be crazy enough to stay again just not when its such an expensive week. We enjoyed the kayaks and taking the boat to the beach we even caught several crabs at the dock. The owner mentioned it being more of a glamping experience but thats a stretch. The view is unbelievable the house is a mix of disgusting and unique. The house hasn't been professionally cleaned in decades there were flea bites on all of us and several raccoon families living in the ceiling spaces especially the top floor I personally made eyecontact with one . We couldn't sleep up they're from the heavy smell of scat and the WWE event the raccoons held every evening. My husband and I ended up sleeping on the couches. The overview and directions we received from the owner stated the pets MUST have flea prevention, well they do so the fleas attacked us instead. The dryer had a broken timer so it ran for a dangerously long time before we realized. Aside from those negative experiences we all had the best time. You couldn't ask for a better location I would just ask that the raccoons be removed and perhaps the fleas.

Great view, but house needs work

This property is described as a place to use as a launch pad for outdoor adventures, not as a luxury home where you have to shower before sitting down. The first part of that is true - the location is great. It’s only a few miles from the grocery store (Food Lion), restaurants, and the serpentarium. The view from the house is absolutely amazing - the sunrises over the inlet are incredible, and I’ve never seen so many stars at night in my life. It’s about a mile walk to the neighborhood beach access - shorter by kayak if that’s your thing and you want to paddle the inlet to the beach. And the beach there is beautiful and full of shells and crabs and wildlife. The description that you don’t have to shower before sitting on the couch, however, is an understatement. The property is in disrepair and was pretty dirty. The dishes were covered in grime and dried food. There were even mouse droppings in one of the glasses. The carpeted stairs didn’t look like they’d been vacuumed in quite a while. There were rips in chair cushions in the living space and even an outlet dangling by the wires from one wall. I did not call the owner to request the cleaning crew come back out, because they had just left when we arrived, and I did not want to juggle our schedule and stuff with the arrival and work of the crew. Perhaps they would have remedied the cleanliness issues if I had requested their return. There was also very little toilet paper, soap, and paper towels on the premises, as well as no trash bags. When I inquired about how we could remedy these issues, I was told to go to the store. There was no sponge to wash dishes, either, and no dish towels. One thing I overlooked before coming is that guests must bring their own bed linens and bathroom towels - they are not provided, so I ended up having to rent them from a local place (Edisto Essentials). There is a boat engine on the property, but until the battery / wire clamps are repaired, there is no safe way to use it since the rubber has fallen off the clamps. As a result, we were unable to use it. I know this sounds like a lot of negatives, but we did end up truly enjoying our stay. I suppose if you think of visiting this house along the lines of camping in an interestingly designed wooden pyramid, you’d like it. But the property needs some work. Take soap, toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, paper plates / cups / silverware, sheets, towels, and bottled water if you stay.

One of the worst rentals ever

The "beach house, not a home" portion of the listing really perplexed me. Here's what that means: the blinds in one of the king-bed bedrooms are in tatters, with about half the slats missing, so if you want to block the light in that room, you have to drape a sheet or a blanket over the curtain rod. The upholstery on the couches in the living room is coming off in strips, which hang from the furniture like rags. The cushions on the wicker chairs have holes in them. The extra blankets in the closet reek of dog. The master bedroom has neither windows nor door that open to the outside, so there is no way to bring outside air in. The house does not appear to have been cleaned in months. The owner claimed that there was a mixup in the cleaning schedule and the house was mistakenly not cleaned before our arrival, but the beds were neatly made, the toilets had the paper banners around them and the toilet paper was decoratively folded, so it appears that the cleaners had been there. However, the "clean" dishes in the cabinets were dirty -- they all had to be washed before use. The dining table was dirty; the windows were so covered with salt-air grime that you couldn't see out of them well; the outside table was covered with grime and sand; the furniture in the living room was filthy and covered in sand and dust. There were dead palmetto bugs on the floor. Don't even think about looking under the bed -- it's a horror show under there. After I complained, the owner called the cleaners back, and they did about another hour's worth of cleaning, which still left the furniture dusty, the glass tables in the living room coated with grime, dust, and drink-rings, and the under-the-bed areas filthy. I spent hours cleaning the tables, the windows, and the dishes. Ultimately we left after only a few days, and the owner refused to make any financial concessions, accusing me of "blackmailing" him with the threat of a poor review. Unfortunately, VRBO also does not consider cleanliness to be a requirement for its listings, so be forewarned. As a short-term rental host myself, I promise that the condition of this home was unacceptable -- under no circumstances would I rent a place like this. And by the way, I am not the kind of guest who needs to stay on Kiawah -- I have traveled extensively and have rented all types of accommodations, from dorm rooms to villas. I have never left early because of the condition of the property.
