About this property
4 Bed 2 Bath Escape in the Woods. 10 minutes to the beach!
Located ten minutes from Big Bay Town Park (the jewel of Lake Superior) and fifteen minutes from the quaint village of La Pointe, you will find 'Northshore' with clean modern lines and vintage accents, working together to create a soothing Northwood’s escape. *New for 2025* We've done some kitchen updating and added a larger refrigerator. Outside we've have two charcoal grills. There is also now firewood on the premises, cut and ready for use. We've also updated our wi-fi! The screened-in porch, front deck, WiFi, Smart TV, turntable and vinyl records, voice activated sound system, a nice sized lawn surrounding the home, and a firepit make time on the property fun and relaxing, while four bedrooms with feather down blankets promise some deep z's. Serene, modern, with a well-appointed interior, this retreat in the woods offers some serious get-away in the spirit of Madeline Island. Our fun and functional Midwestern Island getaway works well for a budget-minded family (sleeps 8-10, but the rate of $345 is for 8 Max, $30 each additional person) or for couples that appreciate a more current aesthetic. We are also dog-friendly! ($30 pet fee). Families with little ones and the elderly especially appreciate that it is all one level and very child-safe. And the cabin has super high-speed internet! Wake up and you can only see the woods, hear the wind. Have coffee in the comfy interior or on the front deck or back porch. Ride your bikes to Big Bay, swim under the bridge in the lagoon out into the gentle Lake Superior waves. At home, wash the lake off in our outdoor shower, grill, then circle the firepit and watch the sparks join the stars above. Fall into goose-down bedding and dream that your vacation never ends... There is also a fold-out couch for an extra charge to cover housekeeping and laundry ($30 for each guest over 8 people). There are two full bathrooms and an outdoor shower. -For a fee, guests can use the pool, spa, and sauna at the Inn on Madeline Island in town. An 18-hole golf course is available in town at Madeline Island Golf Club and in-season La Pointe offers a host of restaurants serving a variety of local fare (Beach Club, Café Seiche, The Pub at the Inn, the Farmhouse, and even a food truck or two). Mission Hill serves great coffee. Darling's Store has a well-curated but necessarily limited supply of grocery items. The marina also has a limited stock of food and beverage. Don’t forget Grandpa Tony’s for ice cream and Tom’s for an adult beverage and atmosphere. -Positively no-smoking. Thank you.

We enjoyed our stay on the island and excellent rental offered by Laurie and Craig during our summer vacation! This will definitely be a special place we will want to return to for another summer get away!
Lori & Craig’s home is a perfect getaway for quiet & relaxation while conveniently located a short drive from Town Park and Big Bay State Park. We traveled with our two kids and their spouses and we had ample space. We all enjoyed the screened in back porch and identifying the different bird calls. Our two dogs loved having the yard to play in. Will definitely be back!
We loved our stay at Lori and Craig’s home in the woods. The house is wonderful and felt like a home from the moment we entered. There was plenty of space for the five of us. The house was sparkling clean and had everything we needed. The beds were super comfortable, the towels plush and cozy. We loved watching and listening to birds on the screened-in porch and eating breakfast and playing games on the big table. Unfortunately, our stay was short but we are hoping to return one day…..
This is our 5th time staying at this property. It’s so perfect for our family of 6. The beds are comfy, the kitchen has everything you need to make your meals, and we love the screened in porch. We all agree it’s like our home away from home!
We love this house for its roominess, cleanliness and location. The screened in porch and hummingbirds are an added bonus. It is super close to the beach we go to every day and house location is super quiet. We will be back again!
We loved our stay on Madeline Island. This home is 2 miles to Big Bay Town Park which our kids loved. It is very quiet and private. We enjoyed the humming birds on the back patio each morning. Rooms and beds were comfortable. Kitchen was a little small for making meals (not a lot of counter or cabinet space) but we were able to make it work. We also went to Big Bay State Park which was a highlight for us...lots of scrambling on rocks on the lakeshore, "cliff" jumping into Lake Superior, and a nice sandy beach at the bay. One thing to note is the ferry is fairly expensive (164 round trip for 6 people and a mini van) so you may want to limit how many times you go back and forth to the mainland.
The house worked well for our family stay on the island. We felt very secluded yet it was a pretty quick drive to town and the beach. Good selection of games to keep kids entertained. Didn’t need to contact owners as everything was as advertised and check in/check out was super easy!
We had a great time at our rental. We were worried it may not be big enough for our group but it was big enough to accommodate all 8 of us comfortably. We are trying to rent again for next year.
We love everything about this space! It is perfect for our group of 5 kids and 3 adults. The kids can play safely outside while the kids make dinner, we can come back from a day at the beach, grab quick outdoor showers and relax watching tv/play games. Comfortable and quiet with responsive owners! So happy we found this gem!!!
The cabin was everything it was stated to be and then some. We enjoyed the quiet isolated location. The screen porch was perfect for sipping morning coffee and chatting after a day of adventures. The hummingbirds were a great treat and we enjoyed them coming to the feeder often. One thing we would suggest for a change is darker curtains in the bedrooms, the early rising sun made it difficult to sleep, especially for the kids.
Very clean - although we were all adults, would have been a nice place for children as well. 3 couples had plenty of room. Screened in back porch was our favorite "hang out" location in the evening as well as the campfire pit! Refrigerator is smaller size but worked well for our group.
Great communication with owners. VERY private!
Comfy - homey feel! Would definitely stay again.
The property served our family's needs great while we were on Madeline Island for a larger family event. There was a brief snafu on housekeeping when we arrived, the owners jumped on it and made it right immediately - we were very appreciative of their prompt attention. Madeline Island has pretty spotty cell service (like almost none), but we were able to use wifi to contact the hosts, and they couldn't have been more responsive. Sometimes things go sideways - but it is how people react that matters, and they were great.
This is a great location nestled in the woods. It was a well stocked cabin - had plenty of seating. Nice bon fire area. Books, toys, board games, TV. The pictures shown in the posting is what was there.
One of my friends saw a bear near the end of the driveway! 🐻 It was exciting! We kept an eye out for more, but didn't see any more.
Google Maps takes you to the road, but not the actual location, so be looking for the fire number yourself and don't be trusting Uncle Google!
The coffee maker is a regular coffee maker, not a Keurig so we had the wrong kind of coffee with. 🤦 We should have checked prior to coming, so that was our bad.
It would be nice if the fridge was a bit larger since it houses so many people, but we just kept beverages and snacks in the coolers and put the food food in the fridge.
We all had a wonderful weekend and would definitely recommend this place to stay when visiting the island. Thank you! ♥️
4 retired couples on an annual getaway. Sleeping accommodations were comfy. Kitchen well stocked. The refrigerator is too small for a place that sleeps 8. Enjoyed the screen porch. Kitchen table was a great size to eat and play games at.

We've been vacationing on Madeline Island since the early 2000's, first camping in tents, then our camper and then for a number of years, staying at vacation homes. Staying in those homes made us want our own to share to travelers of this wonderful and happy island. There is nothing like getting on that ferry and letting your troubles drift away with the receding shoreline. We're always happy to have others join us at our little piece of paradise.
Why they chose this property
As we've stayed at many island homes we dreamed of owning our own and spent several years looking for the right property. What caught our eye about Northshore first was the four bedrooms. Our now adult children are always excited to hop on the ferry and come out and see mom and dad and we enjoy having the room for them. We even have room for the grandchildren! We kept that family feeling in mind as we looked for a property that we could share with not just our family, but with other families through an affordable yet well-appointed and comfortable vacation home.
What makes this property unique
Serenity and ease are what Northshore is all about. Morning coffee on the front deck, evenings by the fire, or listening to the crickets while enjoying a bowl of ice cream on the screened in back porch. Welcome to peace and quiet. Get back to nature with our handy outdoor shower while washing away the sand from City Park Beach. When you want some modern convenience, we have internet TV, WiFi, and a vintage stereo system and vinyl record albums across multiple genres with something for most any tastes. We have the stereo hooked into an voice-activated system connected to a premium music service to provide unlimited music options.
