About this property
Cozy Cabin at SunRay Shire
Welcome to the SunRay Shire home of SunRay Kelley and Bonnie Howard. We are natural builders and our homes have appeared on MTV Cribs, Home and Garden Channel, in New York Times and Lloyd Kahn’s books Builders of the Pacific Cost and Tiny Homes. We have hosted many travelers from all over the world in the unique structures on the land. The country quiet is only 10 minutes to the quaint town of Sedro Woolley and 15 minutes to city of Mount Vernon, home to the Lincoln Theatre and many excellent restaurants. This rugged 9 acre property has walking trails, mountain views, gardens, apple orchard and many examples of handcrafted, sculptural homes and structures. The Stump House aka Cozy Cabin ID#1541586 and Mush Room aka Fairytale Cabin ID#1541712 are adorable little cold water cabins set in a stand of giant fir and cedar trees. Each cabin overlooks a different trout pond. The cabins have electricity, cold water sink, towels, coffee/tea station and wood fired heat in addition to electric heater November through April. Texting your eta and any changes to your eta on the day of your arrival is necessary to ensures you will arrive to a lit fire and cozy, warm cabin. We provide two bundles of wood per night. More wood can be purchased for $10.00 / bundle. Bring your rain boots fall through spring as the trails get wet and muddy. The cabins each have a comfortable double bed made up with seasonally appropriate bedding for a comfortable nights sleep. The Stump House additional has an easy chair that fold out into a small single bed to accommodate a child or third guest. Guests are welcome to use and socialize in the beautiful outdoor kitchen located in the apple orchard. The cabins share an outdoor, composting toilet and outdoor shower house. You may schedule an evening sauna for $50.00, please message us your request or make your request with the greeter upon your arrival. If you have booked a multiple night stay make sure to include the date you desire for your evening sauna. The rustic nature of our property is not for everyone but those who are looking to unplug, reconnect with nature and enjoy whimsical creations will not be disappointed. If you have mobility issues our property is not a good choice for you as the parking area is at least a 100 yards away from the cabins and requires a walk down an earthen trail. We are blessed to live in the forest on Cultus Mountain in North Western Washington. The trees, mountains, clean water, earth and air nourish body and soul. Come breathe, relax and walk in the beauty of nature. Blessings to all from SunRay and Bonnie!
FYI: November to April wood fire is required in addition to the electric heat to keep the cabins warm and cozy. Wood fire heat takes time to start and to heat the cabin. To make your winter stay warm and comfortable good communication with us about your arrival time is essential! Let us know your ETA, at least by the morning of your arrival, so we can schedule a fire starter for your cabin. Please update us if your plans change and confirm your arrival time when your GPS says you are 60 minutes away to have your fire lit and cabin cozy warm for your arrival. Because guests are so frequently late we do not start your fire until you have messaged confirming your gps time of arrival when you are an hour away.

Such a magical place! Came here a bit of an emotional mess and left with a greater sense of peace and a clearer mind. I loved every minute here and would 100% go back!
Absolutely magic, unique place to stay. I can’t believe I am a WA native and just had the honor of staying here for the first time. The whole place is whimsical and cozy. We loved it.
The SunRay Shire is a fairytale woodsy escape from city life. Bonnie is a superstar hostess. The gnome-like lodgings are peaceful, romantic and contain everything you need. Expect natural wood outhouses, an outdoor shower, and an outdoor, shared pavilion kitchen. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be a repeat customer.
SunRay Shire is truly a unique and magical place. We couldn't believe how many interesting structures are on the property and how cozy our little cabin was. What an idyllic place to spend New Year's!
We loved staying here! We rented both the mushroom cabin & the stump house. We brought our 1 year old little guy & he had so much fun wandering around under the apple trees & spending time in the woods. We made dinner in the outdoor kitchen, walked around the property & enjoyed the amazing nature. The kitchen is stocked with pretty much everything you need to cook! Bonnie is an amazing host & we even got to meet her son - he was so sweet, too!!
Faith and I stayed here for her birthday, we were both so surprised around every corner of this property. What a magical place. You can feel the magic as soon as you pull into the shire. Thank you guys so much, this is an incredible stay.
Magical spot to escape from the hustle and bustle. Stayed here with my husband and baby, and it had everything we needed for four nights. Highly recommend a longer stay. We really enjoyed cooking in the outdoor kitchen.
Wonderful property, warm and generous host. Thank you! What a beautiful forest in which to play and stay.

Growing Up In The Cascade Mountains Of Western Washington I Developed A Profound Love Of The Trees. Over The Last Forty Five Years I Have Developed An Organic Style Of Round Pole Timber Framing That Celebrates The Beauty Of The Natural Forms Around Me. My Goal Is To Use My Architecture To Reconnect People With Nature And Their Own Playful Imaginations So They May Expand What They See As Possible.
Why they chose this property
My property is part of my Grandfather Janicki's original homestead. Grandma and Grandpa were Polish immigrants. My Mother moved with Grandpa and Grandma to Western Washington from Chicago in 1920. She was the oldest of 10 children and was the first one in her family to speak English. The old growth cedar trees had been logged from the property when my Grandfather bought the land. I grew up on Cultus Mountain playing on those big old growth stumps, climbing trees and building forts in the woods. I never lost my love of doing those things.
