About this property

Quiet retreat on gorgeous organic garden by lake

Our natural and peaceful home is on 4 acres of an organic orchard. Walk on our trails amid hundreds of young fruit trees, and eat greens from our organic garden beds. Dip your toes in the natural creek at the bottom of the property under the rainforest canopy.

We are an unplugged, retreat zone. No TV or A/C. Our home is detailed with beautiful hardwood Guanacaste doors, cabinets, closet and barn doors. Sliding glass doors open onto a private patio with a chaise lounge. Perfect for morning coffee with toucans and monkeys, and gorgeous evening sunsets overlooking our land and the lake .

Large walk-in shower has a rainfall head and shower wand. The whole house is designed to be handicapped-accessible.

Enjoy our games, books and art supplies as you relax inspired by the natural beauty of the jungle.

NOTE: Wifi is available as-needed due to low bandwidth: the cafe at La Mansion 5 min walking from our house has excellent and fast WiFi. At the house, however if you need it, plug in the device for service to meet the needs of planning travel.
The apartment is downstairs, accessible via the left side of the building as you face the lake. We live upstairs - this is our private area.

We sometimes travel or are in the US. Otherwise, we live here with our baby. We can share airspace so can hear one anothers’ activities. Because we are quiet and calm, mellow activities are appreciated.

If you need assistance, we are happy to provide help, information and tips. Please read the guide first, however, as almost everything you need to know is contained there. Contact us via message please if you need further guidance.

Our housekeeper comes most days to help us (upstairs). Message me if you would like her help with something. Our gardener works 7am-3pm Monday-Friday. You may see him around but he keeps to himself. Both speak only Spanish.

About the host

Hosted by Joanna Horton McPherson

Host profile image
We are a young family who built our home with a guest apartment here on our land overlooking Lake Arenal. Here in Costa Rica, we do reforestation work locally to restore the area's pasture lands into a rainforest corridor connecting the area's volcano ecosystems.

Why they chose this property

Living here, we are able to grow organic food and eat out of our garden. We eat starfruit and passionfruit off the vine, and grown kale, lettuce, and countless veggies as well as many fruits from our young orchard. We got married here after our house was finished, and call this place home.

What makes this property unique

The 4 acres have trails leading down to a private and pristine quebrada (creek). Walking the land is a unique experience in viewing birds, butterflies, and many plants, flowers and trees native to Costa Rica.
