About this property

ELEGANT AND RELAXING BEACH GETAWAY, STEPS FROM THE WATER

Welcome to our charming, art-filled four-bedroom home in Lower New London, an eight minute walk to the beach. This 1930 Dutch Colonial is uniquely situated within walking distance of three bodies of water: we are 200 yards from Alewife Cove, which flows out to the sea and can be explored with a kayak; two and a half blocks from the Thames River, where you can stroll along the shore and to the lighthouse dated 1761 (the first built on Long Island Sound); and four blocks from the immensely popular Ocean Beach Park, with its marvelous white-sand beach, boardwalk, waterslide, Olympic-size swimming pool, amusement park rides, diner/gift shop, miniature golf, nightly concerts, and arcade. Or walk to the neighborhood grocery store, colorful local hangout, the Egg Yolk Café, or the historic Lighthouse Inn.

This vintage home is loaded with original molding and hardwood floors throughout. The first floor has a living room, dining room, kitchen, half bath, and sunroom/office for those who may still need to work while away. There is also a recently tuned piano and stereo. Upstairs is a full bath and four bedrooms (one queen, one full, and two twins). Although it does not have central air conditioning, it has AC units in three of the bedrooms and wonderful ocean breezes. The house sleeps six and is fully equipped with linens, towels, pots and pans, utensils, and dishes as well as a coffee maker, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, high chair, and gas range. There is a WiFi-enabled Smart TV, as well as numerous novels and children’s books, board games, beach towels/chairs/toys/umbrella, and a cooler. There is a washer/dryer and iron/ironing board in the basement. The back garden is set up with wicker furniture and a Weber barbecue. Note: We do not have a pool on the property; there is a public pool down at Ocean Beach Park.

A parking pass for Ocean Beach Park is included with the rental.

Note: After each guest's visit, our home is thoroughly restocked, cleaned, and sanitized by a professional cleaning service.

Welcome to the Dutch House!

About the host

My husband Bolton and I both grew up on the Monterey Peninsula, a resort area on the Pacific Ocean in California, and we are both museum professionals. I am an independent curator and art historian organizing exhibitions and writing catalogues for various museums. Bolton is working remotely for a museum as a curator of 20th century and contemporary American art. We have two college age sons.

Why they chose this property

We researched places on the Connecticut coast and found New London to be amazingly reminiscent of Monterey when we were growing up. We love the sea and wanted to be near it. But we didn't want to live in a sleepy resort town; we wanted something that felt alive and with an active art scene. Quirky New London is the perfect place for us.

What makes this property unique

We chose the "Dutch House," as we affectionately call it, because it is situated in Lower New London in an unusual spot close to a lot of water: Alewife Cove, the Thames River, and Ocean Beach on Long Island Sound. As an older New England home It has a great deal of charm. It is a cozy home and the neighbors are all amazingly friendly.
