Relaxing, peaceful getaway in gorgeous Nelson County. Adjacent to a large hay field which leads down to a branch of the Tye River, the cottage is at the end of a quiet country lane with few nearby houses. The newly renovated home was initially built to house workers from a soapstone quarry located on the property, hidden in the woods. During the remodel, we even found rationing coupons from 1945 hidden in the walls!
Comfortably blending modern conveniences, including free wifi, with quaint, historic charm, the bungalow is clean and minimally decorated with rustic tree posts, wood clad walls, pretty quilts from Sundance, warm wool blankets from a local sheep farm, and an adorable wood burning stove. We were happily able to save the original wood floors in most rooms.
Enjoy your morning coffee on one of the two front porch swings while you listen to the birds sing. In the evening, roast marshmallows in the outdoor fire pit or chase fireflies in the hayfield until the sun goes down for excellent stargazing. Bring your canoe or kayak and drift down the Tye River, only minutes away, with a fishing rod and picnic. Hike to the river which runs through the property and sit in an ancient waterfall!
Perfect for three or four responsible couples with or without children to escape to the rejuvenating countryside. Enjoy an abundance of vineyards, breweries, cideries, and distilleries are located around the county or book a massage at the Lovingston Spa. 30 minutes to Wintergreen, five minutes to Oak Ridge Estate and Lockn, halfway between Charlottesville and Lynchburg. Your host, Renee Grant, can help you plan your stay and, on request, provides worry-free advanced provisioning.
Eleven can sleep comfortably on 3 Queen beds and in one loft that sleeps 4. On the ground floor, you will find two cozy bedrooms with queen beds, one room has a twin sized convertible couch. Upstairs, you will find a third queen bedroom and a loft with two trundled daybeds, each of which is enclosed in pretty draperies for added privacy and fun! In this loft, a wall mounted flat screen has a dvd player, but no cable so bring along some DVDs for more evening entertainment.
The rustic kitchen is well equipped with a four burner stove, dishwasher, microwave, keurig coffee maker, and all the necessities. A front loading, stacked washer dryer is available so you can wash your clothes after enjoying the great outdoors.
The two bathrooms both have glassed in showers and unique reclaimed copper sinks atop rough wooden vanities.
On winter evenings, light a fire in the dining room’s little wood stove to up the cozy factor. The dining table was handmade by one of our local characters. Then adjourn to the living room for conversation or a game of cards.
You're welcome to enjoy a cigarette outside. However, we don't allow any smoking in the house. Please dispose of properly so you don't start a forest fire, per Smokey the Bear!
We have placed two geocaches on the property, hidden in the adjacent woods and hayfield. Ask your host Renee for the GPS coordinates and use the written clues to find the treasure boxes for a fun family activity!
It’s wonderful to come relax in the country- remember that with this peaceful beauty, you may encounter wildlife, to include a variety of bugs like ticks and stinkbugs. An exterminator routinely comes to kill the bugs, but it is impossible to keep more bugs from coming from the surrounding fields and forest. Expect to perform tick inspections, as you would whenever walking or hiking in any grassy field or forest path once the frost are over.
Additionally, the cottage operates on well water. You’ll find it tastes delicious compared to city water. Very rarely, after a prolonged period of rain, the whole house water filter may require changing. If you find there is no water pressure at all, please contact Renee immediately and she can quickly resolve the issue.
Our property manager, Renee Grant, is available to help you during your stay. She can provision groceries prior to your arrival, arrange tours, suggest itineraries and schedule drop off and pick up services for canoe and kayak paddlers.

The house is beautiful; the interior design makes it feel like a cabin. The rooms were big, is definitely pet friendly. The outdoor space is lovely, and the walk and proximity to the river were very pleasant, plus the weather was great. The host was very attentive. I would love to go back and spend more time and would definitely recommend.
Stayed the weekend for a wedding at Lovingston Vineyard. 5 adults and small dog. Quant home, beautiful private property. Would stay again. Excellent communication with host.
This house was such a treat to stay at! Very charming inside with a wonderful fire pit/seating area outside. A trek through the field down to a beautiful small river where we caught lots of little fish. Over all it was a lovely experience!

The home was incredibly cozy and unique. We really appreciated the thoughtful extras (Keurigs, cozy comforter, etc.). The location was wonderfully secluded.
The only “negative” was that there was no internet service. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay.
Good communication with owner. Private, quiet, clean. Unique cedar interior redo. Great outdoor area. Easy on-grade entry. Good free parking. Walking trail nearby. Check out Ann’s Restaurant nearby. Great blackberry cobbler.
Our experience was very good. The rental was smooth and the house was perfect for our event. We were celebrating my husband's birthday and spent the day in Nelson County. We were four couples in all and the house was perfect for winding down for the evening. The house was was so beautiful and quaint that we wished we would have spent more time enjoying it and the property. We hope to plan more events in that area and hope the house will be available!
This property is great for 8 or less people (with some sharing beds). Due to the structure of our group, we moved two mattresses to the living room so four grown men did not have to sleep next to each other in the loft. There are seemingly some problems with electrical/lighting as none of the lighting in the laundry/dining area near the bathrooms worked. We moved a lamp into that area to compensate. Faucet in kitchen needs to be replaced as it sprays everywhere except where you need it to. The outdoor area was nice and we made a fire in the fire pit each night.
Good communication with host. very flexible with dates, host let us add additional day at the beginning of our stay due to change with our daughters graduation schedule
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Loved the cabin. Only complaints, showers were a bit small and the beds weren’t great as I have back issues. But other than that everything was wonderful. Great location to our wedding activities and venue.
Also the host was very responsive and left a nice welcome for us!! We hope to be back again.
Nice location, convenient distance to apple orchards, wineries and grocery store. Only thing it lacked was a TV and Wi-Fi service. Cell phone signal was hit or miss. However, it was a mountain getaway, and some may be trying to escape those amenities. I would stay there again.
The house is very cozy and well equipped. We enjoyed gathering around the fire pit, hiking nearby trails, visiting local wineries and playing cards at the large dining room table. The kitchen is well stocked and perfect for cooking up a big meal for all guests. The house is wonderful, and we could not have enjoyed our stay more.
Charmingly cottage in a beautiful setting. Our family (11 of us) gathered here to celebrate a milestone birthday and could not have chosen a better place. The house is nothing less than adorable. It’s got that rustic mountain vibe you want in a Nelson County getaway along with those convenient comforts you need. Our favorites: sitting by the fire pit under the Milky Way, those porch swings, morning coffee and a walk down the path to the creek. Owners were very responsive, and had firewood and s’more fixins ready for us upon our arrival. We hope to return!
We could not have picked a better place to reunite with our son after almost two years (he's been stationed in Spain). The house was beautiful, quiet, and spacious. It was also well-stocked for cooking meals at home, and the patio/grounds afforded lovely outdoor eating. Plus there were ample bedrooms and bathrooms for six adults. The area is also convenient to some great hikes (try Crabtree Falls Trail), multiple breweries/wineries (check out Devil's Backbone Brewery), some yummy takeout (Blue Mountain Barrel House and Smokin' Barrel Restaurant), and many historic sites (Appomadox, Monticello). Thank you, Renee for sharing your soapstone quarry bungalow. It was just what we needed!
The house is gorgeous...all the wood throughout truly makes this house unique and special! We enjoyed roasting marshmallows in the firepit, playing in the river, and spending time connecting as a family without all the typical distractions at home. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking and preparing meals. And the property owner was always very responsive and helpful whenever I had a question. We would definitely stay here again.

I loved it all! The house is so beautiful on the inside! My favorite part was the kitchen 😍
We loved this charming, unplugged location! We brought our three young children to the cottage over spring break and were impressed with how quaint everything was, even better than the photos. We had so much fun exploring the nooks and crannies of the house, discovering the trail down to the beautiful river, playing games in the living room, and doing all the fun, slow family activities that we had time for without the interruptions of email, etc. The hosts had done a great job anticipating almost every need, and it was a very cozy place to spend time. We would love to know more about the history of the nearby quarry and how the cottage was originally used.
This, by far, was one of the most amazing places I have stayed in using VRBO. It was extremely clean, very well stocked and such a nice, serene place to spend time with friends and family. I would absolutely stay here again!
We had a wonderful time in this comfortable and rustic cabin. Plenty of room for all seven of us (three couples and an infant). The wood plank walls, cozy queen beds, fully equipped kitchen, large living, dining, and sunken breakfast areas gave us lots of room to cook, eat, chat, and watch movies. The porch swings, outdoor firepit, and short walk to the river helped us appreciate the beauty and serenity of the area. The house was well-provisioned with everything we needed, including the welcome gift of s'mores ingredients and wine. We will definitely return soon for more relaxation, peacefulness, and fun!
