This place is an amazing find. Host is welcoming and you can tell how much pride he takes in his property. It is a quite spot close to, but away from the crowds at the University. We saw a momma deer and her two fawns, and found the tree frogs on the windows at night amusing. Definitely plan on staying again when Iwe are Gainesville.

Most relaxing place!

My sister and I were in the area for a big family shindig over New Year’s even and day, and we wanted a place to retreat from the craziness…..Greg’s place was just that and more!Quiet, relaxing, well-appointed, and clean.Greg was available and gracious as a host, but not at all intrusive. He was also a wealth of information about the area. I would definitely stay there again, if I was in the area, and would not hesitate to recommend it to singles, ( including women, it was a very safe place), a couple, or family.

Staying Longer Next Time

This very private garage apartment lives like an enchanted cottage in a setting of palms, pines, oaks, banana plants, elephant ears and the largest mimosa tree I’ve ever seen. The porch is ideal for bird watching with morning coffee and reading on a rainy afternoon. Less than a 10 minute drive from the UF campus, it’s super convenient, but feels as if you’re completely away from civilization. Greg, the host, is gracious and a fountain of local knowledge. Our only mistake was not booking a longer stay. We’ll be back.

Old Florida Retreat

This property was incredible! The location was perfect - close to town but far enough to feel like the space was a retreat into nature. Greg was an amazing host - he provided many great recommendations and made every effort to ensure we had every comfort and amenity possible. He even placed gardenias in our room and gave me some when we left - the wonderful scent of the flowers welcomed to the space every day and wished us farewell when we departed. I cannot recommend staying here enough. Greg is such a kind person and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the rich history of the art and relics that decorate this space. 10/10 hope to stay with him again. Thanks Greg!

Unique Southern Florida Charm

If you are staying around the Gainesville area and looking for a quiet clean and downright charming apartment only 4 miles from down Gainesville then look no further! Greg is an amazing host who met us when we drove up and gave us a short history of the historical objects found in the apartment. It was as if we were in a private museum. We really loved the paintings and other art objects made by various family members- including an antique wicker bird cage. The location can not be beat as the zen garden was just delightful as was listening to the cricket frogs at night and even a Barred Owl! And it was very close to the Gainesville- Hawthorne bike trial. Hope to come back and stay longer some day!

Amazing!

Amazing experience!!!!!!! Beautiful property and incredible landlord. True Southern hospitality! Every item in the house is very special and has meaning from beautiful art work to ceramic pieces to items dating back to the colonial era- all beautifully and lovingly preserved by Greg (the landlord) as part of his family heritage. Very very clean house and has everything, including dishes, coffee maker, silverware, toiletries, magnifying mirror, etc. Beautiful grounds with fig and other fruit trees, koi pond, swing bench outside. Greg thought of every little thing, including all natural bug spray and citronella candle if you want to sit outside in the evening. The place has incredible energy and is very quiet if you are looking for a spiritual/yoga/meditation get away, which was the purpose of my visit. Beautiful lake near by and sightings of wildlife. Greg was even able to accommodate me with early check in and late checkout! I felt at home at this house. Gainesville downtown is only 5 miles away with restaurants, coffee shops, etc. So happy I found this oasis! Will be staying here again next time I am in Gainesville. If I could give this place 10 stars instead of 5, that would be my true rating! Thank you so much Greg!!!

We had a wonderful time in this natural setting. Greg was a fantastic host and gave us a thorough tour of the property along with it's history. This upstairs apartment was beautifully decorated, and very complete with everything we needed. It felt like home being there. The surroundings were natural, serene, and peaceful. It was still just a short drive to Gainesville and the University of Florida. We hope to stay there again when we return to Gainesville.

Relaxing and comfortable March stay!

We were in Gainesville so i could compete at the World Indoor Masters Championships ay the end of March and this property was a the perfect place for us to have as a base. The location was quiet and peaceful with lots of local wildlife to enjoy around the apartment. We particularly enjoyed the historical touches around the apartment and the shower was a highlight! A Gainesville Gem

Greg has created a remarkable property for those seeking a quiet get-a-way. He was a perfect concierge upon arrival and we truly appreciated his knowledge of the area he has called home for so many years. In addition to a beautiful kitchen, large bedroom and a spacious, bathroom, Greg's home includes a wonderfully curated collection of items from his own family history. In addition to the many migratory birds we watched while sipping our coffee and tea, there were plenty of wild turkeys to watch and we even had a quick appearance of a fox! This was a wonderful place to stay and we hope to come again.

About the host

Hosted by Greg DeLong

Host profile image
Semi-retired Air Force Vietnam veteran that enjoys nature and life. Have been a resident of Gainesville for over 40 years and love it here. Very involved in a open and affirming church that is involved in social justice. I'm a free-lance graphic designer/photographer. Very outgoing and love interaction with all people. You will find out that I love history, especially family history that dates back to 1632 as Massachusetts Bay Colonists. I am single and have a grown daughter and grandson that lives out of town. I have a female shetland sheepdogs that are almost 11 years old and a total joy to be with.

Why they chose this property

Looking for peace and quiet and enjoy what nature has to offer, look no further. This estate is on 1.5 acres located within the Alachua County Conservation Area. If you are a birder, this area is a migratory bird path according to the Audubon Society. You will not only see water birds, but also eagle, osprey, hawks and bard owls. Currently I have a doe with her two fawns that visit daily. Of course I feed them deer corn!
After birding, biking or hiking get a massage from me!

What makes this property unique

The apartment is filled with artwork produced by my parents who founded the Jacksonville Watercolor Society. The furnishing are first class with historical artifacts throughout. It's almost like a museum.
Have favorite songs on your phone? Connect via Bluetooth, amazing sounds from a small am/fm radio.
You have your own dedicated WIFI in the apartment! Netflix, Amazon Prime and ESPN+ are provided for your viewing pleasure.
You also feel like you are staying in a treehouse when looking out the windows.
