About this property
Two Rooms & mini-kitchen in Classic Beach House - 300 steps to the Beach
The space sleeps 4-6 with a queen-sized tempurpedic mattress in a window space with a privacy curtain and trundle bed in the downstairs of the house, a bunk bed set in a private bedroom. In the main room there is a mini-kitchen with a fridge, a single induction cooktop, a toaster oven, microwave, and sink. An outdoor kitchen, shower and hottub, sometimes shared with other guests, are a few steps outside. A driftwood gate leads out to the beach. An extra foam mattress on the floor is available upon request. The space includes a microwave and toaster oven and a space refrigerator but not a full kitchen. Three other cabins are available to rent with this space if you need extra beds. Contact the owner for more information.
2025 NOTE: After 18 years of renting the whole house, the owner, who manages and maintains the property and is a Volunteer Firefighter in Stinson Beach, moved into the upstairs of the house and now rents two rooms and the bath downstairs as well as separate cabins (available to rent in addition). If the owner is on site, he is available to assist If things come up. Other guests may be staying in cabins on the property and therefore might share the hot tub spa, outdoor shower and outdoor kitchen spaces.
This a unique property on a nice quarter-acre of land that melds sweetly into the woods of the neighboring national park lands. Unlike many houses at Stinson, neighboring houses are on one fence only, so the place is quite private and expansive. The house is in its own wonderful watershed, almost a little micro-climate, yet only 300 yards from the 3 mile sandy beach. It's a 5-minute walk to the town's three restaurants, the library, market and boutiques.
A solar array and back-up battery allow the house to have partial electricity for several days in the event of power outages.
During the summer and holiday periods we rent by the week. Other times we will rent weekends, with a two night minimum.
For spring, summer and fall getaways and all year. With a wonderful indoor/outdoor feel, you can walk out French doors onto a beautiful Italian tile walkway around two sides of the house and onto the flagstone patio that leads to the hot tub.
Radiant heated tiled floors downstairs,
The house has some connection to Marin County Rock and Roll bands and was said to be a beach house for the Steve Miller Band at one time. The late Grateful Dead songwriter Robert Hunter stayed in the house as a guest. The Chris Robinson brotherhood shot photos for one of their albums on the property in recent years.
The house is located next to a lovely fresh water creek teeming with native plants and visited by wildlife, including deer, foxes, bats, ducks, grebes, egrets, hawks, warblers, flycatchers and many others. In March of 2009 we witnessed a 20' steelhead trout spawning below our dining room window! During most of the year, deer are nearby and visit often. In the late spring, we see their fawns running around.
The house borders the north end of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Stinson Beach Park so it feels like you are on a very large piece of land. At night, a private back gate and path to the Stinson Beach Park parking lot allows you to slip out to the beach without passing neighbor houses.
The grassy and forested landscape allows for great exploring with children and quiet contemplative moments in nature.
Outside, you are right on the edge of the native willow forest with lovely views to the mountain and the waves. We often see deer, hawks and other wildlife just below. We have chairs to seat up to 10 people outside if you want to entertain.
Walk 300 yards to beach or 500 to the town. Two great restaurants, take-out pizza at Parkside, and the entire GGNRA (National Park) beach to yourself after the park closes at sunset or before it opens at 9 in the morning. We have mint and apples growing on the property.
Antiques and art that were collected over a span of more than 30 years are found in every room. It's an interesting place, inside and out, for a beach rental . It is, however, rather rustic.
We do not have pets and do not wish to have visitors bring pets on the property.
The land has enough space outside for an event tent for weddings and other gatherings up top 30 people (additional rates apply and owner approval required).

About the host
Hosted by Charles Higgins

Born and raised in San Francisco, Charles has been watching birds and swimming at Stinson Beach since 1970. From 2007 to mid 2012, he worked in Muir Beach as the director of Slide Ranch, an environmental education and farm-based food education program for urban children. His wife and he have two boys, born in 2001 and 2005. As a family, they spend weekends and summer weeks at the house. The family loves it there and enjoy sharing it with people who appreciate its unique beauty and serenity. In 2021, Charles joined the Stinson Beach Fire Department as a volunteer. With twice monthly drills and other trainings, Charles lives part-time across the creek from the main house in a small cabin.
Why they chose this property
This is a stunning spot in Northern California. Nature, the beach, nice restaurants, many miles of park lands to explore. This is the only property close to the beach that also has wild lands and significant open space next to the house (most beach lots are smaller and sandier - ours is grassy). The property has a nice forest of trees that both provide privacy and a calming sense of nature.
What makes this property unique
This is the right place for a family that enjoys being in nature. The house is on a wildlife corridor along a fresh water creek amidst wonderful native willow forests, wild flowers and grassy meadows. It feels special and secluded, yet it's a short walk to town for an ice cream, game of basketball or dinner.
