About this property
Robin Cottage 4* Holiday Cottage In Dartmoor National Park
The 4* Holiday Cottage surrounded by Dartmoors stunning scenery and only a five minute walk from open moorland, granite tors or the Dart Valley. A traditional Dartmoor pub is within easy walking distance. We are not a traditional farm, we have a breeding herd of Alpacas which graze peacefully in the fields nearby. We also keep a trekking team of llamas close by. Robin Cottage is just moments away from open moorland with stunning scenery, wild open spaces of Dartmoor National Park not forgetting river valleys, granite tors and much more. Robin Cottage may not be what you would expect a Dartmoor cottage to be, The building was constructed in the late 1990’s as a farm building, The buildings were converted into two cottages designed with accessibility in mind. Robin Cottage is attached to our home in the other cottage. There is a double bedroom, twin room, shower room, lounge and well equipped kitchen. There are French doors onto a large decked area looking over the garden and with stunning views of the surrounding moor and farmland. The cottage sits in a secluded peaceful location next to our fields in which our Alpacas graze. The Deck has a table and chairs ideal for having your breakfast on a sunny morning or a glass of wine in the evening. The Hot Tub is situated in the Garden and is exclusive to Guests from 2pm until 9pm We have a wide variety of wild birds visiting the bird table in the garden and there are bird books in the cottage to help identify them. Other wildlife can often be seen including foxes, rabbits and a family of stoats. Robin Cottage is comfortable and well equipped, in the double bedroom the Kingsize bed now has a lovely cosy Alpaca Duvet and a memory foam mattress. The twin bedroom has two full size single beds and is spacious with plenty of drawer and hanging space The lounge has a comfy sofa, and two chairs a dining area with table and chairs next to a very well equipped kitchen with Dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, full size oven with ceramic hob, there is a washing line provided in the garden There is heating and a electric woodburner to give a warm glow in the evenings. The TV is flat screen and has an inbuilt DVD player and a streaming device attached. I am sure that you will find Robin Cottage very comfortable and the location ideal for exploring Dartmoor and the surrounding area.

About the host
Hosted by Diane Weymouth
My name is Diane Weymouth and I run Robin Cottage. I am married to Steve and we are lucky enough to live in a beautiful area of Dartmoor National Park . Steves family have been farming on the same farm nearby since the 1600s Steve’s brother manages the farm in the traditional way raising beef cattle. There are about eighty acres in all and a combination of pasture and woodland. Although we no longer live on the farm we help out where necessary.. A few years ago we decided to widen our interests and develop a small breeding herd of Alpacas. This has been a very interesting and enjoyable experience which we enjoyed for many years before downsizing our Alpaca herd to concentrate on developing our Llama/Alpacas business, which runs from our property. Dartmoor Llama Walks was started in 2007 and has grown year on year since. We take people out on guide walks with our Llamas who carry the picnic. We offer a range of walks all year round. We currently have 7 llamas and 2 Alpacas in the trekking team.
We also 4 pet Alpacas and a few hens to which provide us with freshly laid eggs. Children are welcome to help with feeding the Alpacas in the mornings and collecting eggs which they can keep for their Breakfast (Hens laying allowing).
Poundsgate is near the village of Widecombe in the Moor famous for its fair and Uncle Tom Cobley.
Why they chose this property
Why did we buy this property, well to be truthful we really wanted the field that went with the cottages. We had the Alpacas and needed the land but it came with the two holiday cottages. On closer inspection we could see the potential. The cottages were converted in 2000 from a modern farm building and had been up and running with great repeat bookings. They were designed to be wheelchair accessible and were light and airy, well furnished, very clean and tidy and they had amazing views. We took over running the cottages in Aug 2008 and it was the best thing we ever did. We have increased the volume of bookings over the last few years. A lot of our customers have been visiting for years and we didn't want to change things too much. In 2013/14 we decided to do a major renovation and extensions, increasing the living area of both Robin & Wren Cottages. These improvements have been very popular with our guests. The new extensions have larger windows which make the best of the stunning views over farm and Moorland. We have installed french doors giving access onto private deck areas so you can enjoy breakfast outside or a Glass of wine in the evenings.
What makes this property unique
The location of our cottages lend its self to having a very relaxing holiday, it is great walking country, there are many activities you can try nearby such as horse riding, kayaking, swimming in the river, climbing the Tors. Children just love the freedom of playing on the moors, splashing around in the many little streams, building dams, climbing on the boulders, eating ice creams from one of the many ice-cream vendors. For the Adults, there is a local pub within walking distance of the cottages, many very good restaurants nearby, plenty of coffee shops, tea rooms to enjoy a Devonshire Cream Tea. in Ashburton which is about 5 miles away you can find a good selection of Antique shops, a very well renown Cookery School. Ashburton also has two very good delicatessens one of which specialises in Fish, a very good butcher and a great farmer store which sells practically everything. We are only about 30 mins from both Plymouth and Exeter for a larger range of Shops and restaurants. If you fancy watching premier league Rugby, Exeter Chiefs play at Sandy Park on the outskirts of Exeter. There is also football at Exeter or Plymouth.
