About this property

Historic 6-Bedroom Estate with Infinity Pool and Panoramic Ocean Views

The Old Fort is the historic heart of a remarkable 28-acre tropical estate in the peaceful hills of Mount Pleasant, Bequia. Originally part of an 18th-century sugar property, its buildings were carefully reconstructed using stone and timber from the original structures and designed in the timeless style of a French-Mediterranean manor.

Six bedrooms arranged across five individually designed suites comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests. The layout combines generous gathering spaces with private bedroom retreats, making the property ideal for families, groups of friends, celebrations and special occasions.

At the centre of the house is a large banquet-style kitchen and an atmospheric dining area that becomes especially enchanting in the evenings. A comfortable lounge with a fireplace, wine bar, large-screen television and Sonos sound system provides a welcoming place to relax.

Outside, terraces, balconies and shaded sitting areas overlook the tropical grounds and surrounding islands. Guests have access to the estate’s infinity pool, which includes a shallow children’s section, waterfall, natural pebble grotto and two shaded gazebos. The pool may occasionally be shared with guests staying at The Sugar House when the two residences are booked separately.

A circular outdoor bar above the pool enjoys sweeping views across the Grenadine islands, while the extensive grounds are filled with palms, fruit trees, tropical flowers and local birdlife. Scenic trails lead through the estate towards the rugged Atlantic coastline and the secluded beaches of Ravine Bay and Hope Bay.

The Old Fort has been featured in international publications and has welcomed guests from around the world. Its architecture, extensive grounds and memorable setting also make it well suited to weddings, retreats and private celebrations, subject to prior approval and applicable event charges.

High-speed fibre-optic internet is available throughout the property. Housekeeping is provided several times each week, and private chefs, grocery pre-stocking, vehicle rental, taxis, additional staff and private powerboat excursions can be arranged.

Additional accommodation may be available at an extra nightly rate, subject to availability.

What a Gem!

The old fort is a place like no other I've ever been to. The setting is atop a hill with almost 360 views of the ocean from the tower room where we stayed. The breezes were delightful and I even had to ask for a blanket. Other rooms have air conditioning if you want, but we liked the rustic top floor. Quirin and Otmar were perfect hosts, regaling us with stories of life on Bequia, archeology, philosophy, and the vision and hard work that went into turning a ruin into a paradise. The staff was attentive and friendly and kept the rooms immaculate. Sarah and Josiah served fresh delicious meals. We went to other restaurants in Bequia, but were always drawn to come back to the Old Fort to taste what they had that day. I enjoyed a number of short hikes; one around the mountain top, another to Port Elizabeth, and another to Rocky Cove and a cactus garden led by Brownie the dog. As an example of the care the proprietors gave us, Quirin woke up before dawn to take us to a sailing charter he had arranged for us. We will be back often with friends and family.

Providing an amazing Caribbean hideaway

Our 8 night stay at the Old Fort was just perfect. The property is truly one of a kind with historic buildings, a beautiful pool, breathtaking views, and even a pair of friendly resident donkeys. We were able to fully relax and take in all that Bequia has to offer stressed out people in need of a vacation! Can't wait for the next trip! The Schaedle family have loving restored a fort on Bequia that gives you shelter from reality. We stayed a week to escape the hustle and bustle of the grind of life in the US and were richly rewarded for our choice. The staff at the Old Fort exceeded our expectations and the accommodations were first rate and a true experience not a cookie cutter hotel.

A Truly Unique Experience

From the time we got off the ferry in Bequia our holiday was perfect. We were met by Otmar who was the creator of this wonderful place and who has now passed the torch on to his son Quirin. Between the two of them they have provided an oasis of charm and privacy that is unsurpassed on the island. The Old Fort looks down over the sea with views of Mustique and other islands on the horizon. A gentle breeze cools the air and the grounds are alive with lush vegetation, fruit trees and flowers. The stone work is magnificent, reminiscent of times gone by with graceful archways leading you from room to room. The bedrooms are well appointed, airy and fresh allowing a peaceful relaxing sleep. Depending upon your needs you can have a chef provide your meals or as in our case prepare your own food making use of the kitchen. This seems like a perfect arrangement for larger groups and a great place for a wedding or family time. The dining area is under a sheltered roof but open to the outdoors where you can sit at the end of the day taking in the view and enjoying the gentle night. The sitting room just off the kitchen is very comfortable and everywhere you look there are things of interest from pottery, various antiquites and some quite amazing stone rubbings of ancient Carib artwork. A fairly recent addition is the swimming pool where we spent quite a lot of time. A great design by Quirin! The Old Fort is just a short drive from the town and a variety of beaches so it is easy to take advantage of all that is offered . All in all I can't think of a better location to explore the island from. If you are looking for a peaceful, private place with warm, friendly hosts and a uniquely beautiful atmosphere you will not be disappointed.

I grew up in the Grenadines, primarily in the small hilltop community of Mount Pleasant on Bequia. As a child, I watched my parents and their dedicated team gradually restore the ruins of The Old Fort, transforming the historic property into the estate guests experience today. Their work and commitment gave me a deep appreciation for its history, architecture and importance to our family.

Growing up on a small island presented unusual educational challenges. I initially studied through an American correspondence programme before travelling by ferry to neighbouring St. Vincent to complete my A-levels.

At 18, I moved to Europe and began a hospitality apprenticeship at the Kempinski Hotel Four Seasons in Munich. I later worked in food and beverage at the Hilton Amsterdam before moving to London, where I completed a degree in International Marketing and Hospitality Management at London Metropolitan University.

I returned to the Grenadines and became Director of The Old Fort in 2005. Today, I divide my time between Bequia and London, where I spend part of the year with my young daughter.

My international hospitality experience, lifelong connection to Bequia and extensive knowledge of the Grenadines allow me to help guests experience much more than the property alone. Whether arranging a chef, boat excursion, island transport or simply recommending a favourite beach or restaurant, I enjoy helping each group make the most of its stay.

The Old Fort is more than a holiday home. It represents my family’s journey, decades of restoration and a commitment to preserving a unique part of Bequia’s history while creating memorable experiences for guests.

Why they chose this property

Mount Pleasant is one of Bequia’s most peaceful and scenic areas. Its elevated position provides cooling trade winds and extraordinary panoramic views across both the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, while Port Elizabeth, Princess Margaret Beach, Lower Bay and the island’s restaurants remain only a short drive away.

The Old Fort occupies one of the island’s most historic and extensive private properties. The grounds stretch across approximately 28 acres of tropical hillsides towards the Atlantic coastline, with fruit trees, gardens, walking trails and dramatic views in every direction.

My parents first arrived on Bequia on Christmas Eve 1978 and spent decades restoring and managing the property. Through those years, our family developed deep local knowledge and long-standing relationships across the island.

Bequia remains one of the Caribbean’s most distinctive and unspoilt islands. It combines beautiful beaches, a welcoming community, excellent sailing and boating, independent restaurants and a relaxed atmosphere that has largely escaped mass tourism.

The location allows guests to enjoy genuine peace and privacy while still being within easy reach of everything that makes Bequia special.

What makes this property unique

The Old Fort combines history, architecture, natural beauty and exceptional privacy in a way that is increasingly rare in the Caribbean.

The restored stone buildings are arranged across an expansive tropical setting rather than contained within a conventional villa layout. This gives families and groups generous areas in which to gather while allowing individual guests to retreat to their own rooms, balconies and peaceful corners.

Each suite has its own character. Original stone walls, exposed timber beams, hardwood floors, four-poster beds, handcrafted vanities and pebble-finished bathrooms reflect the estate’s history while providing relaxed modern comfort.

The grounds are equally distinctive. Tropical gardens, fruit trees, local wildlife and panoramic ocean views surround the property, while walking trails extend through the estate towards the secluded coastline and the beaches of Ravine Bay and Hope Bay.

Recent archaeological discoveries within the grounds have revealed additional sections of the historic estate, adding another layer to the property’s evolving story.

The Old Fort can also be adapted to suit different stays, from family holidays and gatherings of friends to weddings, celebrations and retreats. Private chefs, additional staff, boat excursions, transport and other experiences can be arranged according to the needs of the group.

Most importantly, the property offers guests an authentic connection to Bequia: its history, landscape, community and unhurried rhythm of life.
