The city of Agde, sometimes nicknamed "the black pearl of the Mediterranean" Note 2 because of its monuments built of basalt stone, has a long history. Founded in the 6th century BC J.-C. by Phocaeans from Massalia (Greek name of Marseilles in the Antiquity), it was from the year 500 and until the Revolution the seat of a bishopric. In front of the bishop, who from the twelfth century possesses the temporal power of the vicomte d'Agde, the city was very early, towards the beginning of the thirteenth century, administered by consuls, the prefiguration of modern municipalities.
A port city since Antiquity, favored towards the end of the seventeenth century by the opening of the Canal du Midi, Agde took for a long time most of its revenues from maritime trade and fishing. The city has suffered the decline of its port on the Herault, five kilometers from the sea, outclassed by that of Sète since the arrival of steamships. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the municipality lived mainly from fishing and agriculture (viticulture). It is experiencing a new phase of development since the construction, in the years 1970-1980, of the seaside resort of Cap d'Agde, within the framework of the tourist development of the littoral of Languedoc-Roussillon. It has become one of the main marinas of the Mediterranean, the first tourist resort in Europe for its accommodation capacity, and enjoys an international reputation, partly due to its naturist district. The municipality, however, suffers from a high unemployment rate and its economy is marked by the importance of seasonal jobs related to summer tourism. If the city has 27,681 permanent inhabitants in 2016, the population can reach 200,000 during the summer season, where it becomes the second largest city in Languedoc-Roussillon2,3.
