Great base for adventures in Corcovado Park!
We had a wonderful time in Carate, and this house was the ideal home base for all of our activities. We saw scarlet macaws and toucans regularly and were fortunate enough to see a tapir pointed out by the very helpful property manager and tour guide, Yeri. The house has simple but impressive amenities for how remote the area is. The drive to get there is an adventure in itself but you could not be closer to the park once you arrive! Highly recommend getting meals prepared by Tatiana and skipping the hassle of extensive grocery shopping in Puerto Jimenez. We made many amazing memories with our family and hope to return!

4 nights at Scarlett House
We are now on day 12 of our 15 day Costa Rican vacation and Scarlett house was days 3-7. Carate is a bit more difficult to get to than many other locations but honestly that is part of the fun and excitement and though they are improving the roads it kind of saddens me because this feels like one of the world's few last remote and wild places. Justin was awesome in helping me prepare for the journey and answered my numerous questions as the date got closer for the trip for me and my 3 teenage kids. He also checked in a few times to make sure all was good. Erick, the caretaker was amazing, great guy, really knowledgeable about the area and it's wildlife, always friendly, fun and helpful. He is also a certified guide for Corcovado park which is a must do if coming here. The wildlife here was more abundant and varied than any other part of CR we have visited and Erick helped us see even more. We saw all 4 species of monkey on and off the property, sloth, agouti, paca, an anteater walked right in front of my kids in the park, saw peccaries, a deer, lots of coatis, kept trying to see tapirs that visit the garden outside the house late ate night with no luck but we did catch one on my wildlife camera! We saw many Scarlett macaws, parrots, turkey and king vulture, owls. a 7 foot boa, many species of frog( highly recommend the night walk) black hawks, a small crocodile in the park and many beautiful birds and butterflies. One great thing was literally NO mosquitoes! Pretty comfortable weather at night which is nice because all the windows are just covered in screen which at first concerned me but I came to love this, especially in the morning, you wake up early to howler monkeys, macaws and all the other sounds of the forest. Aside from all this, the place felt like our own, especially with Ericks help. My kids even commented on how this place compared to the hotels felt like a home away from home, for me it was a place of peace and retreat and we already miss it:)

Unreal Experience in Carate and Exploring Corcovado
First off, the owner Justin is hands down the best host I've ever had. He was extremely helpful throughout the entire booking process, while traveling and during our stay.I really can't say enough about how helpful and considerate he was setting us up and providing info and answering all the questions we had. This was also during a breakout of Covid in the USA and Justin knew all the regulations and information we would need for traveling in a very unique time to say the least. He also got together with other hosts and lodges and helped bring in a doctor to the nearest town,Puerto Jimenez who could provide Covid tests so we could return home.It was really a pleasure speaking with him.Scarlet House is everything that you need and more! The property is beautiful and large, it must be 16 acres of different fruit trees and plantings. It's a very private home setting and the wildlife surrounds you morning, day and night!Toucans, monkeys, macaws, tapirs, agoutis, tree frogs are just a few on a long list that you can see right outside your door. The house is extremely comfortable and just as advertised. We found that we had everything we needed in the house and didn't have any issues needing any extra for kitchen, bedrooms, beach etc.Justin let us know that his house is secluded and away from all the amenities you'll find in the nearest town of Puerto Jimenez. He was there to answer any question we had about what to bring on our stay and what to stock up on at the grocery store before we made the drive for Carate.Being off the grid and surrounded by wildlife, rain forest, endless Pacific beaches and of course Corcovado National Park are just a few of the things that make Justin's Scarlet House so special! He has a caretaker/expert guide Erick, he literally is the best and we were so blessed to have him.He lives on the property but out of sight in his own cabana and can be there to help anytime you need it or leave you alone whenever you need it.We found ourselves spending ALOT of time with Erick!I highly recommend that anyone that stays here do the same.He is extremely knowledgeable about the local wildlife, fauna, and area.He has grown up in Carate his entire life and knows all the secret spots and is full of passion. We did just about every activity there was to do in the area with Erick.Corcovado is a must, kayaking on the lagoon, beach walks, hikes, just listen to Justin & Erick and they'll make your stay in Carate into a trip you'll never forget!

Once in a lifetime experience
Where do I start? Every aspect of Scarlet House exceeded our expectations. As our group of family and friends made our way to the house, we soaked in so many amazing sights and sounds of the rainforest and beach that blew our minds. Then once we made it to the house, we were amazed by such a spectacular home in the middle of the jungle! So clean and pristine, and we were greated with fresh cold coconut water right out of the shell upon arrival. The house had everything we needed, completely stocked, comfortable bedrooms, and we barely even had to use the fans with the cool breeze blowing through the house. Walking the property has everything you'd want from all types of vegetation and safely distanced animals keeping you company along the way! And if you need anything at all, the owners, Justin and Evee, were always super responsive, and Erick who is on the property is alwawys so helpful. Not to mention, he's an incredible tour guide who can spot just about any animal you want to see no matter how obscure! Would definitely stay again.

About the host

My wife Evee and I are both from Texas. We love good food, unique experiences, culture, and meeting new people. After visiting Carate on a trip we decided that we had to buy a property and share with everyone else. We cant wait for you to experience this area!

Why they chose this property

Our house is unique in this area. We love the jungle and the ocean but we also like to come home to conveniences. We have hot showers, clean drinking water, a full kitchen, electricity, and great Wi-Fi. This may seem standard but that is not the case in this area. The house is screened-in open air and does not have air conditioning. There are not any properties with air conditioning in the area. Every room does have a fan and you will find that the nights cool down significantly. Our property has many fruit trees including, pineapple, mangos, avocado, limes, bananas, plantains, jack fruit, mandarin, cacao, cashews, coconuts, and more! We also have a garden for you to pick from. You are welcome to anything you find on our property.

What makes this property unique

The property is about 16 acres of mostly untouched forest. This is truly an amazing environment so you will see many animals in their natural habitat. We have a full time employee/licensed tour guide on site. Don't worry, he lives in a separate house and can be as visible or invisible as you like. His name is Gary and he is there to manage the property and keep up the land. Gary is fluent in English and Spanish and is available to take care of any needs during your stay. He is an extremely nice guy and very knowledgable about the area. You will love him! If you decide that you want to go eat at a nearby hotel, Gary can coordinate that. He will need to call and see what they are serving as the hotels do not have menus and serve only one option per meal. Gary has been with us from the beginning and is huge part of our future visions. He can take you around the property and to nearby waterfalls. He is highly skilled and licensed as a guide so he can spot things you would never see by yourself. The entire property is available to you. We are also the last point you can reach by car before the National Park. From here you must park and walk approximately 3.5 kilometers to the park entrance. It’s an amazing walk! Gary is also available as a guide If you are coming for the overnight trip to Sirena.
