Family vacation

Our family enjoyed our stay at Berkshire Gorge house. The property manager has been excellent and very welcoming. She gave us some great tips and suggestions for trips and outings. The check-in process was very smooth. The house is in a beautiful location, and right next to a waterfall. Our kids had a blast swimming in the basin. Thank you for hosting us!

Cabin in the gorge

This is a rustic cabin with a non-traditional layout. We got used to having the kitchen and main living area on the bottom level, but it was dark even on a bright, sunny day. We did not notice any mustiness because we kept up with emptying the dehumidifier 2x a day. The beds were comfortable and the bedrooms are spacious. Note that the yard and stairs in the cabin may be difficult to navigate for older people, and you have to be very careful going down the path to the gorge and waterfall. We loved the location of the property, which is central to so many attractions the Berkshires have to offer.

Short Stay at a Great New England House

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this great old New England house. Even though we spent most of our time visiting a friend who lives in nearby Williamstown, staying in the house with a well equipped kitchen, comfortable furnishings, and comfortable beds really added to our overall experience. The hosts and property manager went over and beyond to make our stay pleasant. The yard that fronts on a cascading waterfall and rapid stream is absolutely beautiful. We hope to stay again.

Nice stay

Pros: The location was great and the property was neat. Having the creek and waterfall go through the property was really pretty. If the weather been warm my kids would have loved playing in the water! There was plenty of space and they provided plenty of towels and soaps. The kitchen had plenty of plates, cooking tools, etc. The owner and property manager were great with their communication. Cons: The layout was a little bit weird on the middle floor where you had to go through one of the bedrooms to access another bedroom. Also, the downstairs (living room/kitchen) was very damp and had a musty smell. It could have also been cleaned better as we arrived to find some cobwebs and crumbs. It wasn't anything that kept us from having a good time, but just a constructive criticism.

Great Getaway in the Woods

Stayed for a week and appreciated the solitude of the BGH, but also its proximity to Lanesborough and Williamstown. Great for larger groups looking for multiple bedrooms and a common area to gather.

Charming house in great location

the house was as described with plenty of room for our family of four plus my mother, who joined us for most of the stay. the sound of the rushing brook was lovely. with the rains, there was a little dampness downstairs (kitchen/dining), but no serious issues. there were plenty of clean towels and extra blankets, and plenty of hot water. house manager was accessible and friendly. Wifi was great. my teen even played the piano!

Gorge house

The house is old and quirky but it was clean and everything worked. The lower partially underground kitchen and living room are dark. The upper floors with baths and bedrooms are brighter and cheerier. The real, draw is the waterfall which after all the rain was spectacular and it’s totallly private. Be cautious going down though. The hill is steep and.uneven

Reunion stay

My friends and I rented this house so we could stay together for our reunion. Unfortunately the weather was cold and soggy so we were not able to really appreciate the surroundings but the view from the back patio is amazing. House was perfect for our group.

Unique Setting

Loved the sound of the gorge at night. Five bedrooms and three baths, a huge plus. Found everything we needed in the kitchen. Layout was a little awkward and not recommended for those who have difficulty with stairs but the five of us did just fine. The heating system was a bit loud but the house was plenty warm. The location was awesome and surrounding are beautiful. The location manager was super friendly and helpful. Overall, a very peaceful and nice stay,

Charming rustic house

The Gorge House is a charming, lovingly maintained old house in an ideal location for fun Berkshire activities - hiking Mt. Greylock, riding the rail trail, alpine sliding at Jiminy Peak, attending Tanglewood concerts, etc. The kids absolutely loved swimming in the gorge! The only downside is the musty, basement-y smell that pervades the entire house. It may have been accentuated by the hot, humid weather - and is clearly not an issue for everyone - but it was potent enough to be an issue for the members of our family with a more sensitive/keen sense of smell.

Do not want to leave

We (myself, wife, 8yr old and 16 yr old sons) stayed here with our oldest son who is in collage and we absolutely loved this house, the location, and the quality time we were able to spend here. Waking up and going down by the waterfall and enjoying the serenity while drinking coffee. The mountains in the area are breathtaking. So many thing to do in the surrounding areas as well. I know for sure we will be back and we are now looking for something very similar for us to relocate and move to. Thank you very much and as I stated. We will return. The Luiso Family.

Great cabin in a wonderful location

My family and I had a great stay. The cabin was just as described. The gorge below is beautiful, and a great way to cool off on a hot day. It's a good idea to bring water shoes if you are planning to wade in though. The stream bed is pretty rocky.

Great for a Women's Retreat

For five high school friends in their 50's looking for a weekend retreat, this place was perfect. First, the house... old and quirky, but fun, warm and worked out great for us to cook, do yoga, play games and listen to music together. Kitchen fully stocked, just bring food. Bedrooms all on first and second floors, and kitchen, dining and large living room in the lower-level, a walk-out basement with plenty of windows. We were there during a Nor-Easter, so it was a perfect place to hunker down in front of the huge fireplace. We did venture out back to the waterfall (beautiful) and did a hike through the woods (beautiful). I can only imagine how lovely it is in the spring, summer and fall. Location: Although the house seems to be quite remote, it is a short drive to two of the sweetest towns in Mass, we spend an afternoon at the MoCA, highly recommend. Host: Michael was very gracious and responsive, made sure to provide us with directions for each guest, we were all coming from different directions. Elena, the local caretaker of the house, is a saint. She called me the day before our arrival to see if I had any questions and then provided welcome birthday surprises for one of us, had great recommendations for area restaurants and bakeries, and was quick with text responses when we had questions about the house. She had the heat and lights on when we arrived after dark. She is the perfect host. I recommend this antique house to those who want a unique place to stay, but must be able to use steep stairs and navigate small bathrooms. We all fell in love with the place and promised each other to book again next year.

Winter stay

Cute, eclectic farmhouse, much larger and roomier than pictures seem. The small gorge under the house is a must see. The kids want to go back in the summer just to spend the day exploring it.

Met your needs

Old homestead built a 100 years ago. Needs some attention. Water came onto floor in kitchen when it rained and we had to clean this up. Two dehumidifiers in living and kitchen both witch needed to be emptied twice a day. The placed worked for the four of us hikers and we would use it again if the need arises.

We enjoyed our week in middle earth!

This property was magical- the woods and the waterfall made it feel like something from middle earth. We kept expecting an elf to knock on the door and ask to borrow a cup of sugar. There was a kid sized rocking chair in the house and my six year old was absolutely convinced that meant the house is owned by a dwarf. There was a lot of good hiking around that was both scenic and family friendly and there was plenty of takeout and outdoor dining available too. We were there for a week in August but never even needed the air conditioning. This was a great authentic New England vacation for us and we’d certainly rent it again. (We do need to teach the six year old about hobbits first, though, and maybe coach him on what to do if someone shows up asking about a ring…)

I am a working musician, composer and journalist . I have rented our family home, the Berkshire Gorge House, on a short term basis since 2011.

Why they chose this property

We feel the cultural opportunities, natural surroundings, outdoor activities and 'get-away' location for visitors from Boston and New York City make the Berkshire Gorge House unique. We offer 15 acres of wooded forest, a natural waterfall and gorge on the Western slope of Mt. Greylock, the highest mountain in Massachusetts. The Gorge house was once the guest house for the Clarence Smith estate, now the site of the Bondhu restaurant. For more outdoor activities, check the popular outdoor theme park Ramblewild (https://ramblewild.com/) for hiking, zip-lines, tree climbing and forestry obstacle course. Ramblewild is 5 minutes from the Gorge House.

What makes this property unique

For history buffs, the nearby New Ashford cemetery boasts pre-revolutionary war gravestones. New Ashford was once the home of Crispus Attucks, a freed slave who was the first American to fall in the Boston Massacre which led to the Revolutionary War. New Ashford also has a schoolhouse dating back to the early 20th century, where the first national votes for FDR were counted and submitted in 1932, including the first woman in America, Phoebe Jordan, to register her vote.
