Your map app will direct you to the Melstrand Union General Store, when you arrive at the store there is a wooden fence on the east side of the building. Past that there is a tan cabin by the road with a small porch. This is your cabin. Please reach out to Ariana if you are having difficulty locating the cabin.
This cabin is located within the Pictured Rocks National Forest. With Grand Marais less than 30 minutes to your East and Munising 15 minutes to the West, the location could not be more ideal for the outdoor adventurer. Its location and atmosphere allow for a quiet evening in after a long day of adventures.
Woodland Retreat is walking distance from the Melstrand Union General Store where you can purchase gas, sandwhiches, ice cream (seasonally), pasties, and some of the best home baked goods you can find in the UP!
Whether your passion is hiking, fishing, ATVs, snowmobiles, photography, or just need the opportunity to de-stress surrounded by nature, we have the perfect place for you.
It seems silly to have to add this, but we feel it is necessary. If you do not like wildlife, this is not the ideal location for you. If you are looking for an upscale Lodge type atmosphere, we are not the cabin for you. If you do not believe in keeping your dog on a leash, we would rather you stayed elsewhere (the cabin is on a semi busy road and we like dogs a lot and would be devastated if you lost yours that way). The cabin is older, it is cleaned after every guest with great care, but it is older. Yes, we have Wi-Fi, but occasionally mother nature and the powers that be slow it down or disable it. We recently installed a smart tv so you and your family can stream Disney + or Netflix on rainy or snowy days. This is a cabin, in the middle of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, this large piece of property is shared with some geese, some parrots, a couple dogs, and their people. You will hear them. You may see them walking past occasionally. They will tell us how many people actually checked in and they do know how many guests you booked for. If you are looking to experience Pictured Rocks and the UP it is a great place to stay and we look forward to having you!

This is a RUSTIC cabin this isn't a glamping cabin or a bougie five star resort. Things are outdated, old and basic but that's what we were expecting and paying for. The things that you need to be clean and nice are, very impressed with the quality of bedding and cleanliness of shower. Loved that it was located so close to major trailheads. Old lady in the general store gets a 1 star rating. Would definitely stay again.

Check-in process changed and I wasn’t notified. The beds need mattress pads.Put some blinds or curtains up and give your guests some privacy in the kitchen and living area. There is no deadbolt even though the VRBO listing includes that!Appreciated how clean the bathroom was but the faucet doesn’t function well. I didn’t use it.

OK stay
We thought the cabin was going to be more secluded. It sits close to a major road. One of the descriptions said something about it being a cabin and bugs, and don't stay if that bothers you. That didn't bother us, but I'm not sure when the last time they cleaned. There were cobwebs by the bunk beds, dead flys all over the floor, and mouse turds in the silverware tray!
The cabin is situated right on the road, near a general store, which wasn't clear from the description. Across the street was a home with political flags that did not make us feel welcome. However, it's a nice cabin with full kitchen and bath amenities, including WiFi. I enjoyed making breakfast there, as the nearest restaurant is about 15 miles away, aside from the Bear Trap Restaurant, which seemed more geared toward the RV and motorcycle crowd—not quite our scene.
The furniture, while clean, is quite old and could use some refurbishing. That said, the cabin is perfect for those seeking outdoor recreation, and it suited our needs perfectly!

Nice Location - Needs a few upgrades
This could be the best little cabin. But needs some updating and a deep clean. The coffee pot leaks out the bottom and the vacuum smelled like dog. They have fold out couches, cool but need some refurb, Not comfortable. Very dark many light fixtures were missing bulbs or burned out. The bunk beds need vacuuming under the mattresses.
If the place were cleaned & fixed up. We’d stay again. Otherwise there are other choices out there same price & much nicer.

Expensive for what it is
It was difficult to find since we would lose service just before it. Bring print out map.
Told them we were four women, only gave us three bath towels. Says it sleeps eight but not enough silverware.
Overall our stay was fine but vacuuming and sweeping required and then an additional cleaning fee added on seems a bit steep.
We did not stay. The easy chair is nasty. Worn, torn and dirty arms. The manager said it is antique. It is not, just plain old and needs to be in the garbage. The ottoman has a rather large hole in the material. There are bunk beds but no ladder to get to top bunk. Talked to manager and we were told cancellation had to be 12 days prior. We offered to pay for one night ( we had booked it for 3 night)but were told we would not get any refund. How are you to know 12 days in advance what it is really like. I feel like this is a gotcha. That is money right down the drain.. What a scam!!
Was no where near the amount of snow we were told and when we came up to snowmobile thats tough we had to wait for more snow to ride. Store is closed 4 out of 7 days and gas when you can get it they charge 2 more a gallon than what you can get it for down the road. We will not stay here again and will diffently Not be stopping here for anything when in the area. They double the price of everything they sell that you can get at any gas station. With everything going on with the covid pandemic we tried to help out the local small business and they seem to be taking advantage of people needing supplies. I understand trying to make a living but there prices are totally outrageous. Go to the next town!! Singleton and Seney both with in 20 miles and have normal prices. They get double a night for this place and fox River hotel in seney is half the price and much cleaner!!

Tim,
I am very sorry to read such a negative review. I went back to check our conversation, and at no point do I see where you asked me snow conditions. If you had I would have referred you to the Seney Trail Associations Facebook page and informed you that I reside primarily Michigan's lower peninsula and manage the cabins remotely. I have a housekeeping staff that I will sometimes cover for if we have too many cleans to do in a single day or they need a day off, but I rarely risk giving trail conditions to potential guests as I am not in the UP full time.
As for The Melstrand Store's prices I do not control those, but it is my understanding that their delivery costs on both fuel and groceries are exponentially higher than that of those in town. It really is a great little store and a huge asset to my property management company. Dawn and her staff are almost always willing to open for emergency gas and make substantial donations to the groomers association annually. It's prices are comparable to most remote stores throughout the UP and their food is phenomenal.
I will not touch on the cleanliness of the cabin at this point because I would have to go back through records to check before and after photos of the cabin prior to and after your stay (my housekeepers send me photos upon arrival and after each clean it's handy in situations such as this). If, when I return home, I check those photos and find details that they should work on I will be sure to let them know.
Again I am very sorry that we could not provide you more snow, cheaper fuel (at a business I do not own), and a better trail report from whomever you spoke with.
Thank you
Ariana

Uncharming
The place was just dirty.
Wasps flying out of walls.
Mouse poop everywhere, including silverware.
Paid additional cleaning fee up front, and place was cleaner when we left.
Mice running around while we were sitting inside.
Windows dirty and locks broken.
Check in Instructions read - Door unlocked, key on counter.
Get there at check in time, door is locked, store is closed. Wait a couple minutes, then neighbor from store next door angrily yells key is on the top of the window frame?
From the pictures I expected it to be back in the woods, instead it was right on the road. The beds were comfortable and everything as pictured. I must have missed it in the description, but I didn't realize that there were no kitchen towels.
Host was very prompt in replying to messages. Cabin was dark and stuffy, due to little air flow, but we enjoyed the small porch. Adequate cooking supplies to make meals.

Good as a sleep camp
The cabin is right by the street and the store .
The store has fresh eggs and very yummy smoked fish .
The location is good for day trips in different directions.
There is nothing to sit outside .
The cabin needs a little bit work and more cleaning.
Overall clean and comfortable. Only complaint was the 3 mouse traps hidden on the ground when we got there. There was 1 dead mouse, and my toddler almost got her hands on a loaded mouse trap. The showerhead was broken, leaking, and on a bad angle for a comfortable shower. Nice beds and couches, good Wi-Fi connection, and all other amenities were in good shape.
