We booked the property. Twenty four hours later, the reservation was cancelled because the owner didn't respond in time. We should have taken it as a red flag. We rebooked.
Finally got instructions an hour before arrival.
When we arrived, we thought we were at the wrong place. It looked abandoned and neglected. Sadly, we were at the right place.
This is a list of what we found:
The exterior of the house was dirty. It hadn't been swept or cleaned in a while. It looked like no one had been there in weeks!
The entrance (kitchen) windows were full of dead bugs caught in cobwebs;
No key was waiting for us. We finally managed to gain entry through an unlocked bedroom door;
As soon as we entered, we could smell the mustiness and cigarette smoke. The smell was in all of the bedding, cushions and couches;
I sat down on one of the living room chairs and could see the dirt on top of the stove hood;
My friend sat down on an old stool at the counter, and it broke and she ended on the floor;
We decided to put our dry goods in the pantry. The door broke when we opened it;
Neither bathroom worked properly. It took an average of five flushes to get the one in the first bedroom to flush. And, to top it off, it ran all night and kept us up;
When I went in to take a shower in the second bathroom, the sliding shower door came off in my hands. When I managed to put it back, the second door came off;
It was a very hot couple of nights and I couldn't use the unbalanced fan over my bed because of the noise;
The windows in all of the house hadn't been cleaned in months, and a few of the blinds were broken;
Oh, and did I mention the stained bedspread in my room.
The thing that really chapped my hide:
I called the property caretaker to ask for a key. When I got no answer, I called the owner directly. I told her we were going to be late for a dinner reservation because we we didn't have a key and couldn't lock up and leave.
She asked us to take our valuables with us so that we didn't have to worry. I couldn't believe it!
Her caretaker finally showed up after a while and wanted to know how we managed to get in.
By then, we were too flustered and went for a drive.
We rent cabins about every two months, and have been doing so for the last five years. This is, by far, the worst experience we have had. The description is a lie. This cabin is not worth the cost per night.
