About this property

Shady Grove Cottage is a cabin located in the Black Hills near Nemo, SD, and about 25 miles from Rapid City. There are two units in the cabin, with one reserved for owners. Units are separate, with no connecting stairs. The rental unit is 1300 sq. feet. It has a lodge-like feel, with a vaulted ceiling, a 22-ft. deck, unique decorations, hickory wood cabinets, and stainless steel appliances. It sits on five private acres, with a stream at the end of the driveway, a lake just down the road, tall pines and aspen, and a million night-time stars. Hiking trails are right outside the door. However, we need to limit ATV's, due to landscaping issues.
All amenities are provided, including a living room/great room area, fully equipped kitchen, dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer, towels and bed linens, satellite TV, and internet access. The unit comfortably sleeps 5 -6 on a king bed, queen bed, two single beds.
Shady Grove is centrally located among all Black Hills attractions, including Mt. Rushmore, historic Deadwood, Spearfish Canyon, Custer State Park, the town of Sturgis, home of one of the nation's largest motorcycle rallies, and Rapid City. Devil's Tower (Bear Lodge) is a 1/4-day drive.
There is a three-night minimum for rentals. Upon leaving, guests may choose to do LIGHT cleaning of the unit, or elect to leave cleaning to us. If so, a surcharge of $100.00 will apply. There is a $250.00 FULLY REFUNDABLE damage/security deposit. (The owner's unit will also be offered for the Sturgis Rally, 2023. It comfortably sleeps 4 and has 1 bathroom. (See listing #705361)

Wow!

Talk about impressive! This was by far the cleanest most stocked VRBO we have ever stayed at. We were apprehensive about staying in a place where the residence lived below. It was not a problem at all. Carol was wonderful and did not bother us. The cabin is centrally located between the trail system and local attractions.

Forever memories made!

We had an absolutely amazing stay here. The cabin was very clean and had everything we needed. The view and location are beautiful! We were able to relax and enjoy our coffee each morning on the decks and just soak it all in. Our son (9) loved playing with the outside toys and running around in the yard. Any time with Clancy the dog made it even better. Our teenage daughter (18) actually enjoyed disconnecting a little and read and painted! Our hosts, Linda and Carol were delightful and we enjoyed visiting with them. Both of our kids said they felt like they were with family. Doesn’t get any better. We hope to come back someday. Thank you so much Linda and Carol! Priceless memories made!

Beautiful, quiet retreat in the hills

I wanted to take my Dad and my kids on a truly authentic black hills road trip from MN and this was the perfect spot to stay in between the Northern and Southern hills. We were a half hour drive from Lead, Deadwood, Spearfish etc and an hour to drive to Custer. Carol and Linda's cabin was very comfortable, clean and warm to return to each day and they were very gracious and helpful hosts. Also, the little Mercantile store in Nemo was a great spot to stop to eat at the end of a long day before returning home and was just 10 minutes from the cabin.

Great location

The property was comfortable, cozy and clean. The location was perfect as it was in the middle of all the attractions we went there to see. The host, Carol was very friendly and helpful. And speaking of the location, it was well out into the countryside nestled amongst the tall pines. There were more deer and wild turkeys and we could here the elk bugle in the distance. We were not disappointed.

Beautiful Spot!

The cabin was spacious, decorated in a lovely way and was very clean. The view off the front deck of the meadow was beautiful. The location was near paths for our pups to run, a great golf course was not too far and a perfect spot to take a day for sightseeing. Thanks for the great long weekend stay!

We can't wait to come back!

Carol's cabin was the best rental experience we've ever had. The location is close Nemo but still on a very private road. If you're thinking about coming here to ride dirt bikes, one of the best single track trails is a short ride from the cabin. Also the South Boxelder trail-head is within riding distance, as is Pilot Knob and Riley Hill trail heads. The Cabin itself is impeccably clean, had amazing views, and is so well furnished it blew us away. The kitchen is very spacious and well equipped to cook any meal. Carol is great too. She is a wealth of knowledge about the area and can give you loads of ideas for activities. She is also very polite. I left my dirt bike parked on the stone patio. She left a very polite note asking to move it to the grass, and even gave me a block of wood for the kickstand! All that being said, we can't wait to come back.

Wonderful!

Spent the week with my girls 21yrs and 15yrs, along with my mother and dog Mr D. The cabin was just what we were looking for secluded, with stream across the road warm days and cool nights. Hosts couldn't be more friendly, welcomed us upon our arrival. Mr. D. had the time of his life walking/hiking, he is a city dog and caught his first mouse and rolled in poo (Gabby was not too happy with that LOL) and he jumped into the creek and quickly found out it was deeper than he thought - got a little swim in. We had a wonderful, relaxing time at this cabin and would definitely come back.

Fantastic space

Summer Vacation

We had a great experience. The cabin was exactly what we wanted. There is a bit of a drive to get to it, but for a stay in the Black Hills that is what you need to do! We were able to see and experience all the "things" you should do when you visit the Black Hills. We advise planning meals to cook at the cabin. We made breakfast every day and dinner almost every night as there is not much near the cabin. The view around the cabin is spectacular and the stargazing was excellent! Carol is a great host and Clancy (her dog) is the sweetest. We highly recommend staying here for an enjoyable stay!

Wonderful!

Carol is an amazing host! She made sure we felt very welcomed as soon as we got there. She resides on the lower level but she gives u privacy and space and knows your there the get in that “get away” feeling and relax… behind the cabin is a wooded area my two dogs loves to explore and we took morning walks to the creek for them to ponder in. Carol has a cute dog that wants to be everyone’s friend! It was myself my daughter my husband and two dogs and the outdoor porch we sat in the mornings and evenings. You could watch the deer pop out of the trees and don’t seem bothered by the dogs or humans and watch them just graze away. Perfect location from the hustle of the black hills in a quiet area tucked away. We cooked all of our meals bc it is a drive to get anywhere (always is in the hills) so just come prepared! Great time!!

Black Hills gem

This was a mother daughter trip. I flew in from the East coast and my daughter from Los Angeles County. The quietness of this place was a most welcome respite for both of us. It was a new moon and the display of the stars at night (and the Milky Way!!!) was a sight to behold. We loved the layout of the house - 2 separate bedrooms & bathrooms, and the living area and kitchen were spacious. One of us is an early bird and the other a night owl, so this was perfect for us. The second bedroom had 3 beds, so it would be perfect for a larger family or 2 couples traveling together. Quality kitchen appliances and quality cookware were much appreciated by me. It was a kitchen I was comfortable cooking in. The owners Carol and Lin live on the first level and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting them. We sometimes saw them out walking as we were leaving for a day of sightseeing and they would offer suggestions for restaurants. Yes, some of our daily trips required a bit of driving, but it’s the Black Hills and the views are outstanding! Having a home base worked out great. If I am lucky enough to be able to travel to the Black Hills again, I would definitely stay here again!!!

I am a retired child psychotherapist. Graduated with an MSW from University of Iowa while the earth was cooling! I lived and practiced n Chicago for 40 years. Co-owner Linda Boyle is a singer-songwriter, artist, and does shadow puppetry. With encouragement and time permitting, she will provide you with an evening sing-along around the fire pit.

Why they chose this property

I grew up in the Black Hills and left there, restless to see the world, when I graduated high school--couldn't wait to leave. Now that a few decades have passed, I could not wait to retire and get back for good.

What makes this property unique

I have a very busy time of it when I can get out there. It takes a lot of energy to walk the woods and peaks with my dog, look out back to see if the bachelor elk is coming by, pick up fossils, watch the sunset from Custer Peak, lie on my back in an innertube, and meditate on the front lawn. When friends visit, we go to Deadwood, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and ride the 1880 train. The Warrior's Work gallery in Hill City is amazing, and Prairie Edge store and museum in Rapid in remarkable. Custer State Park is un-missable, and the rock shops and antique-ing are wonderful. Come on by!
