The yurt is the owner's winter retreat when she is training her Iditarod sled dog team. It is 16' and has electricity and 5g wifi. The yurt is a "dry cabin" meaning that there is no water other than what you bring in and there is an outhouse (previously featured in an outhouse calendar). The yurt has a microwave, a Keurig coffee maker, and some electric lighting. Although the yurt has a Jotul wood stove, unless it is 20 degrees or colder outside, it gets too hot in there if you use the wood stove. Consequently, an electric heater is provided to use during the summer months. It is a peaceful retreat. If the yurt is rented by the same party that is renting the adjacent Caswell Cabin (a two-minute walk on a wooded path, the cabin has a shower, flush toilet, washer/dryer and also has high speed internet. The cabin sleeps 3 and the yurt sleeps two (double futon), so if both are rented together, a party of five can be accommodated. Only non-smoking guests, please, and no pets permitted. The yurt overlooks a small lake. The next door neighbor has a sled dog kennel and the dogs do bark when fed each day (in case that is an issue).

Host canceled the night before my stay, as her yurt was under construction. I was looking forward to this trip, and was very disappointed that it was canceled at the last moment. I’ve already reached out to Vrbo to get a full refund.

About the host
Hosted by Kathleen A. Frederick
When not working as the Chief Administrative Law Judge for the State of Alaska, I run Shameless Huskies Kennel, a small racing kennel with 24 dogs. The dogs during the winter compete in numerous races in Alaska and Canada, mainly mid-distance races (40 miles to 300 miles) and the Iditarod. In the summer, the dogs are on a glacier in Juneau giving rides to visitors. In the fall when the dogs return from Juneau, we do dryland events using a scooter or a cart (pictured above).
Why they chose this property
The yurt overlooks a lake and my personal retreat in the fall, winter, and spring. For six years, it was off the grid but electricity was installed in December of 2022 along with Wifi so it's pretty cushy now for a rustic get-a-way. It's peaceful and has great energy. I live on a farm in Palmer so the summer months are busy and I don't get out there much, which is why it is listed on vrbo.
What makes this property unique
It's not too far, by Alaska standards, from Talkeetna and the Talkeetna cut off, so I usually grab breakfast at nearby Sheep Creek Lodge (about 3-4 miles away) or at Black Bear Espresso at the Talkeetna cut-off (about 10-12 miles way). When I'm there, I love going to Denali Brewing company for their excellent gourmet pizzas, salads, and an awesome list of brews, ciders, and mead.
