PLEASE BE AWARE:
To obtain a booking, potential guests MUST tell us something about themselves. WHEN YOU SEND AN INQUIRY OR BOOKING REQUEST, PLEASE LET US KNOW WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU DO (OR DID) FOR A LIVING, THE PURPOSE OF YOUR VISIT AND WHO YOU WILL BE COMING WITH. I APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE, BUT WE HAVE TO HAVE THAT INFORMATION TO APPROVE YOUR BOOKING. WE GET NUMEROUS SPAM MESSAGES TRYING TO SCAM US OR THE SYSTEM IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.
We are not entrepreneurs. We are an elderly couple who are just trying to make ends meet by renting out the front apartment of our two apartment duplex.
When you arrive at the apartment, you will find everything you could possible want, so you can relax after your trip: Cup of lovely tea or frothy cappuccino? Glass of wine? Sparkling water? Cheese, crackers? Snacks? For extended stays, fresh cut flower bouquet? Yes, we have all that covered for you! Be sure to check out the great (if I say so myself) photos of the apartment AND the video tour. Just click on the picture of the house and cycle on through to the third photo (don't miss the rest) and click on the play triangle to view Jon's video tour. If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much can a video be worth? You tell me....

Pure Delight
My family of three completely enjoyed the recent holiday in this charming, spotless, and well appointed 1920s duplex perfectly situated for walking and driving to favorite places in Berkeley and beyond. The hosts were thoughtful and welcoming beyond all others known through many vacation stays, surprising us with our favorite treats upon arrival. Communication by text and email was clear and easy. This beautifully furnished and art-filled space comfortably accommodated three adults relaxing in different ways: sleeping, reading, drawing, cooking. The kitchen and all that it supplied was a marvel. The garden was also delightful. To experience a classic Berkeley dwelling updated with immaculate and contemporary cleanliness and comfort was a joy. This is a special place and highly recommended.

Fantastic!
This was just a perfect location for us to stay while we explored the Bay Area…. easy access to everything while out of the city rat race. The accommodations were wonderful and Jon and Mary are gracious hosts.

Serene and beautiful bungalow apartment.
We stayed in this beautifully appointed apartment while we moved our son into Cal. It was the perfect spot for my Husband and I to relax and enjoy Northern Berkeley. We walked everywhere and really got to take in the surrounding neighborhoods. The breezes in the afternoon were glorious! We will be back.

Host profile image
I, Jon, am a 74 yr old community college English professor still going strong. I have been teaching full-time at Merritt College for 20 years now and don't see retirement on the horizon. I am just going to keep on going now that I am teaching 100% online. I love to travel, take pictures and dance. Mary is an 80yr young retired social worker having paid her dues for over 40 years working in the Richmond, CA "iron triangle." She has taken up painting and in my opinion has become an accomplished water colorist and acrylic painter. She is also an avid gardener as you can see from the photo of our private back yard garden with Mary on the porch. We have been married for 52 years and looks like we are in this for the long haul.

Why they chose this property

We are approaching this endeavor with a special philosophy.. We want to not only make your stay memorable in terms of comfort and esthetics but also provide a loving landing in terms of our desire to help you understand the special nature of this wonderful city that we have enjoyed living in practically our whole lives. As ex-hippies (original) we have been through the Year of the Flower Children AND the People's Park and anit-Vietnam war protests. Let us know if you would like any information about anything. We want to be there for you, but if you just want to go your own way in privacy, you can do that too.

What makes this property unique

As I say in the listing proper, the apartment location is ideal for walking to everything. You can walk to restaurants, downtown Berkeley, movies, parks, grocery stores, cafes, buses or Bart to San Francisco. No need for a car unless you want the added convenience. If you do, no problem with parking in front of the apartment.
