WE ARE LOCATED in the Appalachian Foothills of Southern Ohio about 10 miles west of Jackson, 6 miles north of Beaver in Liberty Township, Jackson County, Ohio. Our 70 acre property offers high rock cliffs, deep gorges, and hidden caves. View picturesque nature from over three miles of clearly marked, scenic trails. Come, getaway at Liberty Retreat!

CARETAKER'S COTTAGE, originally built in the 1960's, was totally refurbished in 2021 with comfort and relaxation in mind. Caretaker's Cottage displays rustic charm with all the modern conveniences.

AFTER A DAY of interacting with the great outdoors, indulge by soaking your cares away in our amazing private hot tub. Play your favorite tunes on our Bluetooth outdoor speakers. Perfect for romantic escapes, anniversaries, birthdays, honeymoons or any other reason to ... getaway.

IN THE EVENING, start with a crackling fire. Listen to the soothing sounds of owls, tree frogs and whippoorwills as you view the innumerable stars in the night sky. We love it here. We know you will too.

WE LIVE HERE on the property. Our home is located about 250' from the cottage. The cottage is semi secluded & due to the foliage we can barely see it, but we're close enough to help if you need something. You may see us out doing yard work, but other than that, we stay out of sight.

LIBERTY RETREAT: Our current nightly rate is $159, $169 Oct-Nov & holidays. Two night minimum stay. Standard occupancy is two guests. We charge for each additional guest over 2 guests. The additional charge is $10/person/night. We do NOT charge extra for cleaning, utilities, hot tub, credit card, etc. But we do feel the charge for extra guests over standard occupancy is fair.

WE CAN ACCOMMODATE UP TO FOUR (4) GUESTS. If your booking is for 1-2 people we will assume you require one bed. We have two (2) queen beds, one (1) bed in each bedroom. Only one bed will be made unless you specify you need both beds.

MAY WE BRING OUR CHILDREN? You may bring your children 13 years old & up. However, the cottage and grounds are not childproof. There are dangers on the property. ALL MINORS MUST BE SUPERVISED BY PARENTS, AT ALL TIMES, NO EXCEPTIONS. We charge for each additional guest over standard occupancy (2 guests), regardless of age.

IS THERE A COFFEE MACHINE? Mainstay Brand, single serving, K-Pods Only.

WHAT ABOUT INTERNET & CELL SERVICE? This is a rural area. Internet is provided by Star Link. We currently have good signal strength all around the cottage. You should be able to Hulu, Netflix, YouTube or whatever you have an account set up for. Depending on your carrier, cell service may be spotty – none, but you should be able to make Wi-Fi calls. We can provide an emergency number for the sitter, but no refunds or concessions.

About the host

Host profile image
We are Mark & Sandy Murray. We own and manage every aspect of our vacation rental. We did all the remodeling and building. We do all the cleaning, laundry and maintenance too. It's a lot of work. But we really enjoy sharing our property with others and helping our guests have a pleasant experience while they are away from home. If you need help with planning, directions, places to eat, recreation, sights, events, please feel free to ask. We strive to provide clean, comfortable accommodations at an affordable price. We hope to exceed your expectations.

What makes this property unique

We are Mark & Sandy Murray. Mark is a native Buckeye (useless nut). Sandy is a sweet South Carolina girl. We met in Berlin, Germany in 1983, when the east was divided from the west. For a long time, we desired to move to the country and live on a few acres, to enjoy all nature has to offer. Once we decided what we wanted, we diligently searched for property for about three years, maybe longer. One day, totally by chance, we drove past a For Sale sign posted near the road. 70 acres was definitely more property than we thought we could afford, but we fell in love during our first walk in the woods. We moved into the cottage in 2015. It was in much worse condition than what you see now.
Our property is located on what once was part of the White Farm. Mr. White is a descendent of group of families that moved here from Virginia in the 1800’s. Story has it, that a Virginia slave owner, named William Ragland, decided to free his enslaved persons and had the families brought here to Ohio. He purchased an entire township of land (one square mile) and gave it to the families. White, Ragland, Carter and Fox, are a few of the family names. Descendants still own much of the land in this area. Our property surrounds the Ragland Family Cemetery. Some markers date back to the Civil War era.
Bordering our property to the northeast, is 146 acres known as the Liberty Wildlife Area. The state-owned property was a gift from the Central Ohio Hunters Club in 1956. There is no access to the wildlife area from the cemetery. Only our registered guests can easily access the wildlife area from our property.
We have traveled quite a bit throughout the lower 48 and overseas. Germany, France, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Badlands, all have stunning landscapes. While they all have their special qualities, there are few places that are as beautiful as it is right here in southern Ohio. We may seem a little bias, but we believe it is a gorgeous place to live or visit.
