The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes, glassware, utensils, pots, pans, coffee pot, toaster, knives, kettle, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, oven and gas stove. There are three bedrooms in this home. One is a spacious master bedroom with a queen sized bed and a sitting room that has a gas fireplace. The other two bedrooms have double beds and are themed: "cowboy bedroom" and "Native American bedroom." All bedrooms contain premium bedding. Both bathrooms are full bathrooms and are quite nice. The guest bathroom has a tub/shower combination and the master bathroom contains a Greek soaking tub. If you need to combine work and play, no problem. There is an office and free Wi-Fi. A small bar area seats 2 additional people. The kitchen, dining and living areas are open concept. The views from every window in this house are beautiful. The porch is a wonderful place to sit and enjoy morning coffee while watching for deer or for sipping a glass of wine in the evening while star gazing. Deer often visit the property early in the morning and near dusk. Also, there is a utility room with a large size washer and dryer. The location was perfect for star gazing which is why we were in Ft Davis. The house was comfortable, clean and had everything we needed for our stay. The gravel road could be a bit of a challenge for a low to the ground car. Communications with the home owner was very good and we hope to return next year.

Clean and very comfortable. So easy to check in. Owner gave us great info on how to get to the house and even described the low water crossings with water present. They were a bit tricky and she suggested a go around that was safer. Communication was excellent. Great views. Saw wildlife.

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The night skies are SO dark and the stargazing was truly breathtaking. The house was very comfortable. The beds and linens were comfy and there were plenty of towels provided. The kitchen is nicely equipped for any meal, and we used it frequently as there aren't many restaurants in the area. I loved that each morning I could have coffee on the back porch, listen to the birds, and look out onto the mountains. This is a great place to stay if you are going to Davis Mountains State Park or McDonald Observatory. We will definitely stay here again the next time we come to Fort Davis.

Beautiful hideaway

We stayed at this beautiful location to explore west Texas - Big Bend, McDonald Observatory, and Ft. Davis. My daughter loved that we could see the observatory telescope domes from the house. Even though it is a bit further from Big Bend, it made for beautiful drives. We loved the amazing sunrises and sunsets. We had some tremendous thunderstorms come through, and even though it caused a couple of challenges, the host was extremely responsive. The issues were taken care of promptly and resolved. We absolutely plan on staying here again!

Excellent Stay

We had a great stay at this home! The house was extremely clean & tidy and the floor plan thoughtfully planned. Honestly, everything was nicer than we expected. It’s in a nice little neighborhood less than 10 minutes from the entrance to the Davis Mountains State Park and about 15 mins from “downtown” Fort Davis. We saw deer, stars and pretty plants. Communication with the owner was great. We would definitely stay here again!

The Perfect Davis Mountains Getaway

This cozy home nestled high up on Arabella is a true retreat. The home itself is well appointed with comfortable seating areas and well kept bedrooms. The home decor is classic west Texas with Cowboy and Native American theming found throughout the home. The back porch is the perfect place to watch the sunset before watching the night sky come alive as part of the darkest places found in The Lower 48. The planets, and Milky Way are easily scene from this back porch. If you’re into hiking and star gazing then this the property for you!

About the host

Hosted by Laura Cox

Host profile image
I am a 7th generation Texan, and I am very proud of my state and its heritage. My 4th great grandmother came to Texas in 1825, pledging allegiance to Mexico for a land grant in Arthur G. Wavell's Red River Colony. She was a sister to Collin McKinney, a delegate to Washington on the Brazos, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and the Texas Constitution. I am a Registered Nurse that is married to a U.S. Marine and current Navy Officer. I have 3 lovely children; 2 are adults and 1 is a teen. My whole family loves the outdoors, all flora and fauna of Texas. We also love the rich history of our state! We love to hike, birdwatch, hunt, go camping, eat good food and drink good drinks! We love the Big Bend area, where the wild spirit of Texas is still alive! (My profile pic is from a hike in Alpine called "The Desk." This hike is approximately 25-30 minutes from the Fort Davis house.)

Why they chose this property

When at this Fort Davis house, you KNOW you are in Texas! It is decorated with Texas artwork and more. I hand picked everything in this home, and made sure it would reflect Texas honor and heritage. Additionally, everything that you need for a comfortable short or extended stay is here. I sincerely want every guest to have a wonderful time and to return again, and again.

What makes this property unique

The mountain views from this home are fantastic! The sun rises and sun sets are wonderful, and star gazing from the back porch of this home is truly amazing! Humming birds and other birds migrate through this area, so it is an outstanding area to birdwatch. Fort Davis has a Humming Bird festival every year! The grounds around the home are nice and contain trees, agave, shrubs, cacti and other plants. There are books for your enjoyment in the bedrooms; most of the books focus on the West. The home also contains some toys in a footlocker in the office that children are welcome to play with. (Lincoln logs, Jenga Blocks and a few games.) The location of this home cannot be beat! It's near everything of interest in Fort Davis: Prude Ranch, Sproul Ranch, McDonald Observatory, Fort Davis National Historic Site, the scenic loop drive on 118, Chihuahuan Nature Center and more! This property makes a wonderful home base to discover the Fort Davis area and is also great as a stepping stone to/from Big Bend National Park or Big Bend State Park.
