About this property
Updated classic mid-century ranch home with pool
A quiet canyon retreat. Whole house with yard, private amazing pool, and garage with EV charger. Classic 1954 suburban ranch completely renovated in 2021. It has been lovingly updated to maintain its mid-century charm while adding modern amenities. Steps away from the wilderness and fifteen minutes from world class shopping, dining, and culture. Basic food staples, including simple breakfast options, are stocked for your convenience. Please inquire if you want more details or special requests.
The decor is a nod to mid-century ranch suburbia. Newly refurbished in 2021 from top to bottom, with brand new bathrooms, kitchen, super fast fiber-optic internet, strong Wi-Fi, new furniture, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, insulation, windows, and floors. The pool and outdoor space have also been completely redone, with plenty of room to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of canyon life in the San Gabriel Mountains.
Our neighborhood is very hilly and most shops/restaurants are blocks away. Public transportation is not near, so if you do not have a car you will need to use a ride share service.
You will have the whole house, yard, pool, and garage entirely to yourself, but we live just a few doors away on the same street, so we're generally available to give you local tips and advice, and provide you with hospitality.
Right on the boundary of the Angeles National Forest there is nearby access to dozens of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails and historic sites. Step outside of the hustle and bustle of greater Los Angeles on the threshold of the wilderness. Known for frequent sightings of wildlife including everything from owls to bears.
It's hilly here, so you may want to have a car to get around unless you're specifically here for hiking and biking in the mountains. We provide info on local eBike rentals and on many local hiking options. We provide a Tesla High Power Wall Connector with included J1772 EV adapter for other models inside the garage.
Our pool is not heated, so it is quite chilly in the winter.
We have a strict no events or parties policy.
There is no smoking or vaping inside the house or on the patios. Smokers may use the fire pit area in the backyard.
In a canyon sounds carry. We ask that you be considerate of our neighbors while outside.
Our house has an unfenced pool, and it is not safe for children or infants.
The vehicle shown in some photos is for scale only. Not included with rental.
Use of the EV charger is included for one vehicle. Please inquire about extra pricing if you want to charge more than one vehicle during your stay.
During summer months, it is common in this area for sugar ants to turn up looking for water. We scrupulously treat for this, but it is normal for this climate. They are clean and harmless. If you do notice ants in the house, please inform us immediately so we can clean them up for you.
We live on the edge of the Angeles National Forest. Wildlife is part of the neighborhood. You may be fortunate enough to see one or more of the following during your stay: many species of birds, snakes, and lizards; skunks, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, mule deer, bears; and if you're *very* lucky, the shy elusive mountain lion. While this is always exciting, as long as you respect the wildlife and keep your distance, there is very little chance of having a dangerous interaction. This is a normal and expected benefit of visiting Altadena.

About the host
Hosted by Jeremiah Small
Norah was raised in this neighborhood, and we live just a few doors away from El Ranchito in the house she grew up in. We're third generation on Stonehill Drive, a close-knit neighborhood where everyone knows and looks out for each other. Jeremiah grew up in Philadelphia, and went to New York University. Jeremiah and Norah met and married after graduate school, and together moved to Los Angeles for a job opportunity. Norah's parents decided to retire out of state a few years later, and we were able to buy the house Norah grew up in.
Why they chose this property
We purchased El Ranchito, located just a few doors away from our house, after the original owner passed away. We have renovated it it so that our parents can move back to Stonehill Drive when they're ready to live closer to us as they get older. One day in the future, we could even see ourselves retiring here. This is a neighborhood that people don't often move out of, and we have restored El Ranchito with the long term in mind.
What makes this property unique
Located at about 1500 feet above sea level and in a canyon, we have our own microclimate here. The canyon shields us from the sun in the early morning and late afternoon, helping keep things cool, and the canyon has its own breathing rhythm. Air flows up canyon from the valley floor during the day at 4mph, and cool mountain air flows down at 4mph during the night. We have central air for the occasional days when it's needed in the afternoon, but on most days, we choose to use shades and breezes during the hot part of the day, and our whole house fan to cool everything off after the sun sets.
There is an abundance of native plants and animals living here, and if you take the time to look, you may be surprised at the number and diversity of wildlife you see. We are steps from the Angeles National Forest.
