Newly Renovated Artist Loft in Historic Building Near ~BART~
This recently remodeled open concept loft is a ten minute walk to the 19 St BART, a few blocks from Lake Merritt, a Whole Foods market and downtown Oakland. Coffee shops, restaurants, art galleries, and dance studio spaces dot the immediate neighborhood.

This is a funky (in a good way) loft in an historic building. Owner is friendly. The neighborhood had a lot of activity at night. The water hotpot had mold in it. Also the trash was not removed from the previous guest - probably just overlooked along with a couple of other small items.

Noting some oversights that occurred during our opening back up after the pandemic confirms what it felt like to us as well - harder than we thought it would be. We've been so focused on sanitizing and meeting the CDC guidelines, putting away extra dishes and linens so that you and we can be assured you are staying in a safe and sanitized environment. We're grateful that the pressure on our loft and the environment in which it resides is easing though we have learned many techniques we plan to keep in place for the comfort and sense of security we can provide our guests.

Best value in SF Bay Area
I've stayed at this property annually for the past few years. It is the best value of any property with easy access to both San Francisco and the East Bay. Oakland is a city that continues to improve for the traveler with outstanding options for dining and drinking within easy walking distance. The unit is clean, well-equipped and well located in Oakland's rapidly improving Uptown area. Check hotel prices in Oakland and you'll see that this apartment beats them all. The sofa bed is improved over what shows in the photographs (Queen size) and the building is quiet and safe. I'll certainly be back.

Thanks Ken for your update on what's happening in the Uptown neighborhood. And thanks for mentioning the update we've made in the sofa bed since taking those pictures. You're reminding me we need to post some new ones to show it off.

This loft was so spacious and beautiful! My boyfriend and I were in love! There was great natural lighting, a beautiful kitchen, and bathroom! I felt right at home staying here and never wanted to leave!! Definitely would come back and stay here again!
This flat is very well appointed, clean, and comfortable. The building is safe and secure. The neighborhood is okay...I am accustomed to navigating in areas where there is a mix of people with varying levels of mental health. My daughter lives a block away and she has thrived in this neighborhood. I will definitely stay here again when I return to Oakland.
Cute loft - Neighborhood has lots of gems but is a little rough
The loft is cute and all the space a couple needs for a stay. The neighborhood was pretty rough looking on first glance. The Taco Bell next door is noisy throughout the night but not terrible. Even though the neighborhood is a bit rough, there are so many great spots within walking distance! We embraced the neighborhood and ended up having a really good time and walked everywhere we needed to.

Embracing the neighborhood is the way to enjoy being in a place that doesn't look like home. Our neighborhood is a changing one, as you can tell from all the construction cranes. It's on the edge of downtown and a center for art galleries and other art-based activities. The First Friday art event sometimes happens on our corner, complete with taco trucks. The Bay Area, like many cities in California, is in need of low income housing for its citizens, so you may see people who live in makeshift camping-type housing nearby where you are walking. If our governor gets his way, CA will solve this problem to the betterment of all its citizens.

This is a difficult review . While there were good things about this property, there were things that made it not so good. First, and worst, is that our rental car was broken into on the street in front of the building.
The bed was comfortable, and as in other reviews, there were lots of nice clean linens, but the shower was terrible. The loft was dark and there were several light bulbs that needed to be replaced. And although there were lots of windows most of them were in odd locations and not very clean, so they didn’t do much for light during the day.
There were good restaurants in walking distance so the location was convenient for this, but the surroundings directly around the building that the loft was in weren’t comfortable at all.
We did enjoy our stay, but it could have been a lot better
Comortable, cozy good location for exploring Oakland or travel to SF
The apartment is comfortable, spacious for a studio,. well furnished, plenty of clean towels and linens, comfortable bed. During the chilly damp week of my stay the heater kept the apartment warm to suit my preference.
Walk to BART is about 10 minutes, with good options for diners bars and clubs along the way. The location is reasonably quiet except for some noise around the neighboring fast food drive-thru.
Would certainly recommend to anyone wanting to visit this Oakland neighborhood, or for a reasonable base for travel to San Francisco (this was my purpose).
Everything about this property was great except that it neighbours a slightly less welcoming area of town. Our car had two windows smashed in while parked on the street out front of the unit. We aren't silly enough to leave anything of value in the car, but we still had to deal with getting the windows repaired on our trip. Now that being said, we had a lot of fun in the neighbourhood (hence the 3 stars, and not one!). We had actually planned to go to San Fran, but say in Oakland to save some money and found so many good bars/ restaurants within walking distance of the unit that we never left!
The apartment was ideal for the two of us. Had everything we needed with plenty of space.
We arrived quickly and cheaply from SFO using the BART airport app. Then we bought Clipper cards to see us through the quick journey into SF each day. Busy with commuters but it saved $$ on expensive hotels. The apartment was a 10min walk away from Bart station. Nice safe area with coffee shops and bars. Whole foods a few minutes away. Sometimes a little noisy with delivery trucks in the early hours but not a real issue.
We would happily stay here again. Comfy bed. Good hot shower. Well equipped.
We spent a really nice week in San Francisco. The apartment was as described and really nice and comfortable. Only the parking situation was a little bit difficult from time to time. However, we would love to come back one day!
My stay was for 5 days. Only needed a place to sleep for we toured all day. The loft was updated but the building, location, and neighborhood were suspect. There's NOTHING historic about the neighborhood. If you are easily intimidated by uncomfortable surroundings, this is not for you.
The loft itself was very neat and clean. There is a ROKU TV and if you are not familiar with ROKU and want to watch TV, you will be disappointed. I asked for a HDMI cord and watch TV from my laptop. Management got me a chord immediately, which was very nice.
The location is excellent. We were right by th Bay Bridge and right by the highway to get you to Napa Valley. Overall a good experience.
Sheila's place was exactly as described. Looked better in person than the ads, which shows that it was very nice.
Well stocked in terms of essentials (towels, toiletries, hangers etc). Very clean and instructions were very well done.
The only thing not perfect is that it is not far from the highway in terms of urbanness - sidewalks close by were dirty and there were homeless around. But this is expected from the downtown oakland location and wasn't an issue during my stay.
This apartment was perfect for what we were looking for. It had everything we needed for our short stay. The neighborhood is abundant with homeless people but they were all very nice when we were out and about. There were lots of places around to eat at. We didn’t rent a car since it was such a short stay, we just took an Uber everywhere. It was close to everywhere in Oakland and close enough that we spent one day in San Francisco. I would recommend staying here!
Great option for visiting San Francisco and the Bay area
The apartment itself was very well equipped with everything that we needed, including all bathroom necessities like shampoo/shower gel etc which was very handy. Very simple to cook some meals too in the kitchen on a couple of occasions. The air conditioner was very useful too. The location was good, both to park on the adjacent streets, and to take a short walk (5 mins) for the BART to reach SF across the Bay. Handy also to not carry around keys and rely on the two access codes to lock and unlock the doors. Wifi very good too. Very good value, and made things much easier to have a very good week in the area.
The neighborhood is not the best but due to the good connection to San Francisco and airport via bart I can recommend this place for SF visitors. The appartement is clean and quiet and the communication was quick and easy.
The property was easy to find. When we arrived the instructions to get in were accurate. Apartment was very clean, tidy and surprisingly spacious. Bigger than it looked on the advert. Everything we needed was within a few blocks of where we stayed. Watch out for parking especially on the first Friday of every month. Forget about parking around the apartment on that Friday as the streets are all closed off for a street party on the main road outside. The nearest BART was 19th street and was a few blocks walk. It was ideal for what we needed and would stay there again.
The building itself my not look very appealing from the outside, but the appartment was very nice!
A clean and spacious loft in an area from which San Fransisco centre is quite close. We loved the space and it was close to some nice bars and restaurants.

About the host

My husband and I have always wanted to live in California but our families and work have kept us in the Midwest and East. We currently live in Pittsburgh on the Allegheny River but we come to California every chance we get, and we're still involved with the non-profit in the building.
Why they chose this property
The historical building where the loft is located was purchased in 2000 by an art-based non-profit that my husband and I have been involved with for many years. As a volunteer I operated the loft as a corporate apartment for several years for the benefit of the organization until the building became a condo and the small apartments in the building were put up for sale. We bought and renovated the space and stayed in the loft when we came for workshops and retreats. Guests have always come from many countries to participate in classes and trainings in the building, and we often present events or take part in workshops in the building ourselves. When that isn't happening, we rent it to people not associated with the organization
What makes this property unique
Ease of getting to most anywhere in the Bay Area is one of the best advantages of the loft's location. We're 3 blocks from the 19th St. BART Station and buses run often on Telegraph and Broadway. That, and the availability of Uber means It is not necessary to have a car. The center of everybody's favorite city is a 15 min ride on BART - avoiding parking and bridge fees. We are near several medical facilities so medical professionals, family members and even patients have stayed with us while undergoing treatment or getting periodic check-ups.
