About the host
Hosted by Laura K. Benton
Mountain Adventure Retreats was founded on a deep-rooted passion for the San Juan Mountains and a shared commitment to excellence in hospitality and property care. The venture began in 2013, sparked by Laura’s long-standing love for Ouray County. A lifelong Coloradan who first discovered the Ridgway and Ouray area in 2001, Laura brought with her an extensive background in business, marketing, and travel management. Her years of experience in the ski and property management industries across North America’s premier destinations provided the foundation for a company built on community and exceptional service.
In 2020, the team expanded when Steve moved from Dallas to join Laura in Ouray County. Steve’s arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company, bringing forty-three years of high-level construction management experience to the team. Having served as Vice President for some of the nation’s top General Contractors, he integrated professional expertise in budgeting, procurement, and project oversight into the company’s property maintenance and caretaking operations. His own connection to the state dates back to 1993, when participating in Ride the Rockies ignited a lifelong passion for Colorado’s dramatic landscapes.
Today, Laura and Steve work side-by-side to lead a dedicated team of professionals focused on delivering top-tier property care. When they aren't overseeing the finer details of a guest's stay or maintaining local residences, they are often found embracing the outdoors together. Whether they are cycling, skiing, hiking, or fishing, they remain inspired by the ever-changing seasons and the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.
Why they chose this property
The neighborhood surrounding Yeti Summit offers a tranquil, residential mountain atmosphere that serves as a quiet gateway to the San Juan Mountains. Located just two miles north of Ouray’s historic downtown, the area is defined by its dramatic red rock ledges and the soothing presence of Corbett Creek, which winds through the landscape. This pocket of the valley provides a serene sense of seclusion, where the sounds of the forest and flowing water replace the bustle of Main Street, making it a favorite for those who value privacy and a connection to nature.
This location is particularly well-suited for outdoor enthusiasts, offering immediate access to some of the region's most iconic landscapes. The nearby Dallas Trailhead provides a starting point for exploring the expansive Dallas and Corbett trail systems, which boast breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. Additionally, the creek itself is a point of interest for the local canyoning community, known for its rugged beauty and proximity to spectacular waterfalls. Despite this immersion in the wilderness, the convenience of town remains just a five-minute drive away, allowing for easy trips to the Ouray Hot Springs Pool or local restaurants before returning to the quiet of the neighborhood.
What makes this property unique
What makes Yeti Summit unique is its rare balance of secluded luxury and practical utility for mountain travelers. While many retreats in the Ouray area offer proximity to nature, this property is specifically situated directly alongside Corbett Creek, allowing the sound of flowing water to be a constant backdrop on the scenic deck and from the private hot tub. This creates a high level of intimacy and atmosphere that is often missing from more centrally located mountain lodges.
Furthermore, the property stands out for its logistical accessibility. Finding luxury accommodations in a residential neighborhood that can also accommodate a 14-foot truck or trailer is uncommon in this region. This makes it a premier choice for visitors bringing specialized gear or equipment for the nearby Dallas Trailhead who don't want to sacrifice the comforts of a high-end king suite and a private, self-sufficient kitchenette.
