We really enjoyed the central location of Custer, and the house was so warm and cozy in the Black Hills during the last of November! The kids were in the hot tub outside when the temperature was 18F degrees!
We fit comfortably at this property (4 adults, 6 teens). It was clean had all the amenities you could ask for and was in a perfect location. There was even an amazing frisbee golf course right near the house. Would highly recommend this property!
We enjoyed our Vrbo and it was a beautiful house. We were always greated by a mom and 2 baby deer in the mornings and evenings on the property. It was a great location, it was still close to town but secluded. Also very centrally located to all the places we visited!
Property was great! Location is a great home base. House was super clean and organized! Had plenty of towels, beds were comfy. Great home for a Black Hills getaway
Perfect house, has everything.
My family really felt in love with the place.
Everybody whish to come back.
Host very attent and friendly.
Location couldn't be better, close to many attractions.
The property and views are amazing! It's great to have your own private mountain residence, walkable to Custer! We appreciated the children's toys and books. We had all the amenities we needed.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at needles nest! The home had plenty of room for our party of 12 and was well stocked with toiletries, kitchen utensils and appliances, we were very impressed. Candace was easy to communicate with and we would definitely recommend this place to a friend!
The setting among the Pines and boulders was perfect. Every day we were visited by deer and turkeys. The boys enjoyed the hot tub and outside fire setting. The location was easily accessible to Mt. Rushmore, Hill City 1880 Train, Wind Cave NP and especially Custer SP.Correspondence with the owner was wonderful.
Needles Nest was perfect for our family. We had 6 adults and 6 children and there was plenty of room for all of us. We enjoyed the fire pit, the hot tub and the wrap around deck as well as the hammocks. It was so well equipped for anything you might need. We were visited by deer and turkeys day. Truly feels like you are in the forest with a road taking you to downtown Custer just a few blocks away.
Beautiful location and easy access to all there is to see in Custer or Keystone. The property is spacious and the yard was the perfect outdoor playground for our kids. We loved that there were toys and books to play with in the house as well. It all felt very private too. Thanks for a great stay!
Wonderful property! Centrally located by so many great destinations. House up on the hill above the city of Custer so easy to get groceries, or stop by the great Mexican restaurant in town or quickly get to the main roads yet you feel very remote. Wrap around porch let us sit in the sun or shade any time of day!
We needed a cabin close to our family in Hot Springs and this did exactly that. Its location just outside Custer made it easier for us to get Pizza from town. It made for a nice getaway before the new year begins. Thanks!
The location was perfect for easy access to so many locations. The owner was very easy to communicate with and responded immediately. Pleanty of bedrooms with comfortable beds. It was nice to have plenty of towels for the bathroom and hot tub! Lots of space for groups if you had a larger # of people. We could have walked into Custer for dinner or shopping as it was located very close to town yet seemed more rural. Well supplied with extras throughout. If you are looking in the area i would recommend it.
7 friends traveling together and we had a wonderful stay at Needles Nest. Plenty of room for everyone. The location was convenient to all the fun activities close to Custer. The nearby Big Rock Trail was a pleasant surprise with an overlook of Custer. We didn’t want to leave. Thank you Candace for a great stay.
We came here for my 40th birthday and it was perfect! Cute cabin with wilderness feel yet close to town- we had a campfire one night and it was amazing to star gaze.very nice that the lower level is another living space since we had a bigger group. Coffee on the wrap around deck watching a deer and her fawn was definitely a highlight!
Excellent property! We stayed with two families and had plenty of space for 11 people. The house was clean and the beds were incredible! The location of the house was spot on to all the attractions we visited. Would definitely recommend to anyone traveling to the Black Hills area!
We had a wonderful time staying in what truly can be described as a nest, you’re nestled in and surrounded by nature, rocks, trees, etc. Your close to town, but you don’t feel like it. We enjoyed the yard the house and the surroundings.
Excellent accommodations with beautiful views and close to Custer
The place had enough space for all 12 of us and worked great for kids and adults. Everything we needed was supplied. Candace was extremely responsive. Great views, private, but within minutes of Custer. Would definitely recommend.
We had had 6 adults and 4 kids here plus a son and daughter (with dogs) at another property hang out as well. It had everything we needed. Bathrooms were nice, the bedrooms were good. There were a lot of different hang out areas inside and out. We loved the fire pit, hammocks and hot tube. The property was large so we also had yard golf set up. It's only 3 minutes from downtown Custer, but we felt really secluded. We are talking about going back.

About the host
Hosted by Candace Dockter
Hello! My family of five is from eastern South Dakota and we make Needles Nest our home seasonally. My husband is a GIS vegetation scientist, and I stay home with our children. Our family enjoys hiking, reading, crafting, and music.
Why they chose this property
While we both grew up on the prairie, the Black Hills have always held a special place in our hearts. We bought Needles Nest because the house offers enough space and rooms for multiple families or friends to gather, and the gorgeous property provides the tranquilly and rest so many desire. We thoughtfully designed and furnished Needles Nest with families in mind, and we hope it feels like home when you're visiting!
