Very responsive hosts

Check in was very easy, there was a lot of communication with the hosts. Plenty of room for our party of 5, age 6 - 60+. We really enjoyed the hot tub and view of Lake Superior. Location was perfect for our tourist excursions to Glensheen and Canal Park endeavors. Time didn't allow for Gooseberry, but would be perfect for that too!

We stayed here for a family wedding weekend so we didn't spend much time at the house. There was good communication between the owner, overall the house was as it appeared in the pictures.

girls trip - nature and relaxation

we had a blast! check-in was nice! we got a little tour before settling in, by the owner’s daughter (who was an absolute doll). she gave us a run-down of nearby nature walks and views. it was the first vrbo i’ve stayed in that had personal belongings in it, so it was a little weird, but it gave a very homey atmosphere! felt like we were staying with relatives. 😊 thank you so much for everything. i’d absolutely stay again.

Great Lake views

The place fit our needs perfectly. We had planned for 7, but in the end only 4 of us came. There’s was plenty of room for more. We thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub, and sitting on the deck watching the sunrise over the lake as we sipped our morning coffee. The location was quiet and convenient. The owners were very friendly and responsive. I loved all the little touches that made the decor cozy and special. We all had a great stay.

These renters were the only guests that we would not invite back . The blacktop driveway is available for parking but these guests had several cars which were more than they had reported to us . They needed extra parking space which we graciously offer in the side lot which is solid gravel not mud .The guests came home well after bars closed may have found mud while walking around the side lot (that they did not rent )trying to find someone to let them in when they forgot the door code . They were trespassing on neighbors property as well using very fowl language . The jacuzzi which we drain and sanitize between guests was more filthy than I have ever seen . I have no idea what they could have done in it. Upon their arrival We greeted them and asked them if there was anything that did not meet expectations or anything we could do do make their visit more comfortable . They did not have any complaints other than that there was something left in the refrigerator that our cleaning person neglected to remove Kris personally removed it and sanitized the refrigerator again . She said she was satisfied. Kris offered a generous discount on a future booking for their inconvenience . However after the experience of filthy jacuzzi remains and late night disturbances from our guests we will not be disappointed if they never return. The description fully matched what the renters enjoyed . 5 clean bedrooms 1 king , 3 queens and 2 twin beds all with clean sheets ironed and even hung out in the fresh air for clean fresh scent. There was one very large full bathroom a beautiful deck with views of lake superior as pictures from deck show, . Functioning jacuzzi 2 grills and fire pits , plenty oc towels and clean linens . We even left paper towels sanitized and soaps for their use. We are disappointed that it did not meet their expectations however all of our other guests have been very pleased as have we with them.

Attentive and helpful

I rented this home for a bachelorette weekend for my sister in law. Cindy was very helpful in the process when the site wouldn’t work and communicated often when I had questions before our stay. When I arrived she had mentioned they were spring cleaning. They had been doing some landscaping so she was clearing away some of the extra items. I rented the home for 9 girls and everyone had a bed to sleep in which was nice. The home wasn’t professionally cleaned as the previous reviewer expressed, but I did some cleaning before decorating and putting the party together. I left the home in the condition that it was found. I asked Cindy for check out instructions and she said just basic cleaning. I loaded the dishwasher with any remaining dishes we used and the girls stripped the beds to make laundry easier for the cleaning crew. We attempted to run a vacuum again but it doesn’t pick up much. The door kept on locking us out and although the homeowners were next door, we didn’t feel comfortable leaving the door unlocked with all of our stuff inside. We had to call her to come unlock the door a couple times. Hot tub was very nice and used on the first night we arrived. Neighborhood was pretty quiet for being as close to UMD as we were. We had a great time.

We really were honored to host your big party ! Sorry in the fun of things someone must have forgotten the door code ! We explained that in case someone would forget the code perhaps use the deadbolt key lock would be a be an alternative ! ! We showed first attendant the key and suggested it as an option ! The deck door can only be locked by someone on the inside therefor I’m sure one of your guests locked it on you ! Just to make it clear we have a professional cleaning service and they cleaned millionaires mansions and have a strict check list to follow ! I went in and personally hand washed floors and all were waxed waxed . Which is why we noticed the derp gauges in the bamboo floors after your departure. All carpets were shampooed hot tub cleaned ( but was filthy after we returned ) we assumed muddy feet from in/out tub . We will leave a bucket to clean feet on in the future for those who might go out into back yard barefoot and rented the tub. We do clean hot tub and drained it before and after your visit . Duluth had a very late winter spring and hi winds kept our crew quite busy ! We’re so happy to see things starting to get green and flowers springing up ! There were gouges in the bamboo floors by something being dragged across it . Unfortunate mess left on basketball court But overall we enjoyed you as guests . Thankyou for your feedback !! We will make sure to leave notes about keys and maybe leave a hidden note with reminder of the entry code on the front porch ! I will also make sure to take an extra run through the home to have final inspection before the next guests arrival !! Thanks for your feedback !! The Bates

Ladies Weekend

Pluses: House has plenty of room and good areas for gathering. We were able to spend good time chatting together catching up. The hot tub and fireplace on the deck was nice. Agreements with other reviews: There are quite a few personal items around. General cleaning was good – vacuumed, wiped down, clean sheets/towels, clean hot tub. But many areas had built up dirt and needs a detailed scrub and could use some good general maintenance. The deck railing is messed up from a tree fall and roped off by snowmobile fence and ratchet straps. Concerns: There is a tenant and dog that lives in the basement, and there is an access door in the kitchen. The door has no lock for the renter to secure. This was a deal-breaker for a couple friends where some late-night noise from the tenant freaked them out, and they left. The owner stated this was disclosed and sent me a pic showing the tenant disclosure, but none of us could find this information online. We were missing three smoke detectors throughout the bedrooms. The deck door has multiple locks, all of which only mildly worked. As the owner mentioned in other reviews, a previous renter left the freezer opened but the freezer wasn’t cleaned out where things melted. We had a good conversation with the owner before we left, where we discussed our concerns. She mentioned it has been challenging keeping up personally, and as a rental owner, with the repairs for many different reasons. She did offer a future discounted stay.

We were really quite surprised by these renters complaints as I made many attempts to communicate with Emily and did not have success . I specifically asked her if anyone had allergies or special needs she said no. One of her guests complained that the sheets had a scent and she’s allergic to all scents . She practically had me in tears she was so rude. . The sheets are washed with organic plant based soap a mild frankincense in the soap . They are double rinsed and steamed clean . . I was very clear about the host living in an apartment in the lower duplex . The type of rental we have requires owner occupied . There are very few 5 bedroom rentals in duluth . Next year we will hopefully make the 2 year backlogged lottery that will allow for fewer limitations . The deck railing was damaged by a fallen tree and was impossible to get it repaired before their stay .it is a large deck and warning tape was secured on the back corner .. This was fully disclosed before their stay and opportunity to find other location was open to them but Emily never responded to my requests ti discuss . They were very rude and unkind and disrespectful renters . I have never met anyone like this bunch of women . I would never choose to rent to them again as I believe they are more accustomed to hotels that have no character . . Our 100 year old historic home is decorated for the ambiance of that experience . We closed rentals after this so we could make all of the improvements . There is high grade white carpet upstairs which although was professionally cleaned only 2 weeks prior to their stay we are closing our rental for the season to restore hardwood floors upstairs as well as complete the deck rebuild . Quite honestly this group makes hosting your home for rent an undesirable experience luckily most of our renters have been a pure pleasure

FILTHY AND STINKY

The house is pretty run down. Wall paper peeling off walls, half painted walls, water damaged floors in the kitchen and dining room. Those things I could have overlooked if it didn’t smell so bad. It has an old house smell but then there is garlic hanging in the windows in the kitchen to add to that smell! The deck was rotting apart. The benches were held up by some bricks but some places it couldn’t even be held up. The hot tub was not clean and we found glow sticks and loose screws on the bottom so it was obviously not cleaned. I was told I put too much chemicals in and that’s why we had brown foam when we turned on the jets!! The entire house needs a deep clean as others have said. Dust and dog hair everywhere including in all of the beds! I found a pill on the floor and with a crawling baby with me that was concerning. Moldy windows and they all need a good clean that has not been done for many years. This was my first time doing Vrbo and I was very disappointed. Then we went to go to bed and we found dog and human hair on all of the sheets. One set of sheets was covered in mold. That was the last straw. The owner said I would get a full refund if I didn’t contact Vrbo but after a few days of not hearing from them I went ahead with a complaint to Vrbo. Now we were supposedly swinging from the basketball hoop and bent the pole! The tallest person with us was 5’6”!!! Not sure how we could have gotten up there?? I stayed the 2nd night in a motel!

We are surprised at the review and sorry that you were disappointed . . This woman who is complaining was walked through the home with me I showed her each room as well as the deck and I and opened the hot tub . She had no complaints or concerns about the cleanliness or safety . , .She registered 2 adults and 2 children yet filled the house with at least 5- 6 kids and 4 adults . One child about 3 or 4 years of age was at the end of our long driveway in street unattended , others were swinging from some rope which appeared to have been thrown over basketball rack .banging on the pole holding it up . Neighbors complained of the noise which has never happened before. They used all the out door towels for hot tub and kids had a lot of fun in the hot tub . Perhaps one of them found a glow stick in toy box outside snd brought into the tub . Anyway all 7 beds were slept in all towels used and the following noon she decided to leave and requested a full refund . It was a bit like consuming a full meal at hi end restaurant and complaining about the food wanting a refund after planting a hair in the empty plate . I was relieved they were leaving as very concerned someone would get hurt on our property or in street. She threatened to call vrbo and leave a bad review if we did not give her a full refund . I told her I could not refund for the night they obviously used snd fully enjoyed . I also offered her my discount at a local hotel which I believe they utilized . Vrbo told me this is considered extortion and did not recommend me to refund as they fully used the property Regarding the deck there was damage from storm and it is a very large deck yes the back end seat was blocked from use and supported by landscaping blocks instead of wood . We have construction company scheduled to replace whole deck which would interfere with our commitment to our renters so we scheduled it in a week it is less committed . The bamboo floor under the refrigerator was damaged by the previous renters but again repairs can’t be done overnight. Again the kitchen floor is being replaced with tile to prevent further overflow from ice maker or water dispenser on the refrigerator. Our sincere desire is to share our Duluth home with visitors and focus on satisfaction . It is important people disclose fully the number of guests and respond to my efforts to find out ages and special needs. These folks did not respond at all and slso showed up over 2 hours early

Bentleyville

We planned a weekend in Duluth to go to Bentleyville with friends. We enjoyed the hot tub each night with a view of the lake. There was not very detailed check-in/check-out directions. The email and app said that the host would meet us at the door when we arrived, but I sent multiple texts and calls to tell them when we arrived, and did not get ahold of anyone for 30+ minutes. Once we were in, we were informed that the oven was broken, so we had to order food for delivery. The freezer door was also broken and wouldn’t stay shut. The house did not seem to be professionally cleaned as most places are when you arrive. The bathroom counter was covered in hair and the floors were not vacuumed. The driveway is on a hill, which made it difficult to park a car in the driveway after it snowed, so we parked across the road. Overall, this place has plenty of sleeping room for larger parties, and would be a great place in the summer to use the deck and large backyard.

Fall Color Tour

My husband, FIL, two adult children and their significant others enjoyed a 3-day weekend in Duluth. This place was spacious, had a beautiful view, and a fabulous deck! Our only complaints were: WE needed one more bathroom (lol) and seating (both living room and dining) wasn’t set up for a large number of people (note: we did see the hosts attempt to accommodate for that). The hosts left written instructions and were responsive to questions during our stay. The hot tub was a BONUS as was the large backyard. Given another large family trip we would check into availability of this listing.

Host profile image
We have been married 33 raising 3 wonderful children while practicing professional healthcare. We met in Texas at a healthcare convention, dated long distance for 3 years, as Cindy lived in MN and Kris in TX., and then we were married. We have now been at this home for 19 years and are nearing retirement with the plan of increased travel, thus we have decided to make others feel relaxed and happy here within our home just as we have been. We love Duluth as one of the most sought after destination cities and we hope that you enjoy this beautiful place with affordable comfortable living experience. while enjoying beaches , rivers, waterfall, woods and music and food !We just wanted to invite guests to experience Duluth as a home.

Why they chose this property

We love the peaceful serenity of being able to either sit on the deck or the chairs we have in the front yard as each have the magnificent view of Lake Superior. There is so much serenity in the relaxed state that this allows. It is SO nice to live on the "outskirts" of town where you are not quite so bound up with stress from the city, but still close with a short commute to shopping, snow skiing, water sports hiking concerts marathon and or either a leisurely drive along the beautiful Lake Superior shoreline sandwiched between Hawk ridge below us and Hartley nature center above our property hosts much wildlife . Available hip camp space next door as we own land adjoining us
From kitchen while cooking you can watch kids play in level fenced back yard and deck

What makes this property unique

This home was built in 1921 and still is in excellent condition after 100 years with the ambiance as well as the stability of antique dwellings. When you watch the full moon or the sunrise over Lake Superior you hear the silence of nature. Deer grazing in our open woods and wild flowers next to the home with bunnies are a common friendly visitor. It is not unheard of to have a black bear wander in and or a curious red fox with bald eagles soaring overhead, as we are the migratory path of many variations of fowl, including the Hawk Ridge. In fact this is a bird watchers delight with 7 waterfalls and queries tumbling down from there as you cross 7 bridges to scenic London Road . The same area which In the winter the dog sled races pass through! Amazing to watch as they come or go from Canada! If you love horses the amenity trail runs right behind our house and if you need to park a horse trailer in our yard next door you may inquire. We are pet friendly with kennel in back yard but choose not to rent to pets at this time. Our new beds include a extra large king size bed in the primary suite and the bed controls allow antigravity as well as raise you to view the sunrise or the moonlight spill into your room. The queen beds in room 2 is brand new and made with green tea and charcoal to keep dry and sanitary as your body sinks into the conforming material. There is a double queen log bunk bed room in which you have views of Lake Superior. You feel as though you are in a log cabin in this motif. The middle room 3 also lake view with new bed or queen air mattress if preferred. The main floor is immediately next to bathroom and laundry facilities. Kitchen has a great view of back yard if kids are playing in fenced yard as you cook . We do have a grill and will sell propane or wood or charcoal. My husbands heavenly haven on the front yard by fire pit he'd enjoy a cold beverage while looking t at the lake under large maple tree while raspberries burst with color!
