Large house in a wonderful location!

This was a great location for visiting Santa Cruz with our large extended family. It was a short walk to the beach and short car trip to the boardwalk.

Wonderful location and comfortable house!

My family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this house - perfect location, comfortable beds and plenty of space! The beach and marina are very close by and there were plenty of parking spaces. The house itself has wonderful character - with the stained glass windows and fun floor plan. The owners were easy to contact and very friendly - gave lots of great advice for places to visit. We are hoping that we will be back soon!

Family vacation

There were 13 of us! My husband, son, me, 2 granddaughters, their 3 children, a nephew, his mother, my brother, & 2 family friends. My son & the one friend had gone to college there, so they took us to places that knew & liked. Natural Bridges, Semore Marine Center, to name a few. There was one afternoon at the beach. A few of us rode our bikes to the Boardwalk & back. We just spent time together in a different location than usual!!

Great Home

My extended family and I had the opportunity to stay at the Beautiful Painted Lady over the holidays. Our group of 13 had plenty of room in this spacious 3 level home. We found it to be tastefully decorated, extremely clean and filled with lovely amenities. The beds were very comfortable. We so much enjoyed the Jacuzzi after a day at the beach (which was only a 3 minute walk). The 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms gave us all ample space and privacy when wanted. Also the Harry Potter room was a real treat for our teenagers who loved it up there with their own space, tv and dvd player. The 2 kitchens came in handy, as we could prepare and store food downstairs as well as the main kitchen upstairs. We had a wonderful stay and I would highly recommend this home to anyone. We are planning on returning in the summer time as well. Mya Whitehead

We had an excellent family reunion at this Victorian house!!

This is an excellent house for a family reunion! We had ample room for nine of us. The ten year olds LOVED the Harry Potter Room on the third floor. The house was clean, the beds very comfortable, plenty of linens and towels. Even beach towels, boggy boards and sand toys for digging and making castles. The Twin Lakes Beach is so very close, a real plus! The house is close to several nice restaurants, the boardwalk and a stroll around the block. The kitchen, dining room and living room are on the second floor and well connected for cooking, and gathering. The hot tub was warm and inviting on the private patio. The BBQ was available, though we did not use it...to many nice places to eat! The owner was very responsive to a small problem we had. I would highly recommend this house for a gathering. The location, the amenities, the size all meld to make for a wonderful relaxing gathering spot! Thank you to the owners for a wonderful vacation with my loved ones!

The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

The good was really terrific - fantastic even. This is a really cool, funky house. Lots of great hide and seek places for the kids. Even a Harry Potter closet (walk in closet with window and twin bed) downstairs that the kids fought over. The kitchen and baths were well-stocked. I hate those houses where they give you one roll of paper towels and toilet paper and you have to scrimp - this is NOT that house. Dishwashing soap, cleaning supplies, plenty of towels, etc. It really is a short walk to the beach - I time three minutes walking by myself; it probably took twice that week with the kids. The beach was lovely - perfect sized waves for boogie boarding, nice sand and not too crowded. The jacuzzi was perfect for after beach or on cloudy days. We took lots of bike rides around the area. It's really close to a nice bike path going over to Capitola. The harbor nearby (3 blocks) has pelicans that were a major hit with the kids. The owners were very nice and gave lots of recommendations for places to eat and visit in the area. The bad was this home is on a pretty busy street corner, which could be noisy at night (this wasn't really a big deal to me, but good to know if you are a light sleeper). The ugly was there were mice in the house when we were there. The owners were very responsive and came over immediately to set traps, but given the extent of the problem and how much we paid to stay, it seems like they should have had a professional exterminator and should have given a partial refund for the inconvenience- which was considerable.
Response from VrboOwner on 18 Apr, 2020
We received a call from the lessee on Saturday regarding a rodent in the home. After awakening in the am, rodent droppings were found by some food left out. This was our first encounter with any rodents. We immediately called a professional exterminator. There were only 3 since we are in a small town. We reached 2, who were out of town and wouldnt be available until Monday. We never heard from the third one. Since they were unavailable for 2 days, they advised us of what they would do. We took their advice and expertise and immediately went to the home to set traps. We also looked for any openings which they might have squeezed thru. we found one and blocked it. We take great pride in this home as it was our personal residence for many years. We kept in communications with the lessee and she advised us when she would be out of the home, so we would come over during that time and check traps (so as not to disturb them). The lessee never asked for or discussed any reduction in rent. We were surprised that she thought a professional could do any better since we caught the culprits. Things do occur in nature that are out of our control, but we will take appropriate measures to solve any problems that may arise. We appreciate the positive review.

Rodents and Ants

It would be helpful for those who consider staying at this home to realize that this house is over one hundred years old. It seems that every effort has been made to maximize the number of people that can be accommodated. The attic loft is served by a stairway which would be more accurately described as a ladder. There are so many decorative items that the house feels rather cluttered, and surely make a thorough cleaning difficult. Neither cook top has a hood or vent. Cooking fumes and grease float upward and outward and adhere to the ceilings, surfaces and floors. When the breaker tripped on the clothes dryer, it took us quite a while to find the breaker box. (There are two on the outside of the house at the meters. But the one we were looking for was inside on the exterior wall of the downstairs kitchen.) I found it curious that the clothes washer and dryer were located outside the house, but I guess since it so rarely rains in California, this probably isn’t unusual. However, our greatest concern, and the issue which nearly ruined our vacation, is the attention paid to pest control. We learned after we arrived that mice had been spotted by the previous renters, so the owners had put out mouse traps. From previous reviews, we learned that this was not a first time occurrence. One evening, we returned from dinner out to discover a rat, not a mouse, a RAT, dead in the living room floor. It was at least six inches long without the tail. It had been caught by a rat trap behind the TV and had pulled itself and the attached trap out into the middle of the room before expiring. One family in our party very nearly left that moment. Everyone was very distressed. I called the owner to appraise him of the situation. He didn’t seem to know that rat bait essentially embalms rats, so that there is no odor from those who crawl back into the house before dying. I urged him to engage a professional pest control service to address this problem. Perhaps they could also address the ants all over the coffee service area in the dining room. They even found their way into our luggage. My further advice would be to reduce the clutter, put hoods on the cook tops, have the electrical system examined and improved by a certified electrician, update the clothes washer and dryer and get some bed side lamps.
Response from VrboOwner on 18 Apr, 2020
I was very surprised to hear all of the negative comments about our home since I had a conversation with the wife after their stay. She told me her husband actually let a guest write the review as noted by the name Cindy R. Other than the rodent and ant incident, the wife told me she loved the home. She told me it was 2 members in their group who did not like our home since they did not like old homes and hated using the stairs to the Harry Potter room, and did not want to pay their share of the rental. Her husband felt bad since he picked the home and let them vent by writing this review. The stairs are steep and I have specifically not recommended them for the elderly or small children. This group was in their late sixties, so I can understand their concern with the stairs. Therefore I would recommend anyone considering our home take this into account. There is a skylight in the Harry Potter room which opens to the roof, which I have posted that the screen should stay on and close the window up at night. This was not done, and it is likely this is where the rodent entered the home. It was an unfortunate occurrence. We have a regular service come out and spray and set bait out for creatures, and set traps as a precaution. I would think it is good that the rodent was caught. We are vigilant, but if there is an open window from a guest, this is something we cannot control. Within 12 hours I got a great review from another guest--5 stars praising our home. So as you can see, almost all of our guests have a great experience staying at our home. Often it is the case. People leave food out and ants come out. Comments about decorative items are a trivial matter and I feel Cindy is being quite petty. Most people appreciate our added touches in decorations. All of the electric in the home was upgraded in 2009. A breaker can go off when the home is overloaded with 15 people and using hair dryers, spa, washer, electric clothes dryer. NO one can expect to run 5 major electrical items and not trip a breaker. All normal if you overload the system. Our information binder contains details about the breakers, water shut off, etc. But I was happy to take the call and direct him to the dryer breaker which was tripped. Hoods are not required in the home since it is an historic monument and there is no grease anywhere This guest threw everything on the wall, hoping something would stick. Can’t please everyone but we do most of the time,

Fun and Funky House Near the Beach

Our group had 3 families sharing the house. It is fun and quirky, with many personal touches. There were places for 7 adults and 7 kids to sleep and having two kitchens made meal prep much easier. We all loved the location, especially the easy walk to the beach. Deke's market supplied us with necessities and tasty ice cream. Debbi was quick to respond to any questions or concerns. A good time was had by all!

Good location but not a Luxury property!

Nice location. Good for a big extended family group with multiple sleeping rooms. Enjoyed the hot tub and walking the neighborhood to various beaches and restaurants. However, NOT a luxury listing by any standards!!. House is very cut up and main gathering areas are cramped. Both upstairs showers are disgusting with mold and decay and need to be remodeled

The house was built in 1905. The main living areas are not large, however there are 2 living areas in the home. One is 25x 16, the other is of modest size, 12x15. The back yard can easily accommodate the maximum amount of people which is 14. Upon inspecting he home, we found no mold. The walls in the shower are painted wood beadboard to match the walls,. We found that the paint is chipping off from constant humidity exposing the dark wood, which could be mistaken for mold. This will be taken care of by repainting the beadboard or replacing with tile . Most of the interior of the home is redwood and beadboard which gives it its character which was followed through in the showers. We appreciate any feedback in which we can improve the home .

This House has a Story to Tell

This house is over 100 years old and it comes with some of the things you might expect of a house that old, but it has a story to tell. It is perfect for a multi family setting since there are two separate floors with separate living room and kitchens. I booked this last minute, sadly for a funeral, the day before arriving. The homeowners prepped everything for our arrival and were prompt and kind. Any issues we had they responded to immediately, even issues I said not to worry about then changed my mind on later. They came by and brought us propane tanks for barbecuing so we didn't have to buy our own and provided beach towels. I think we contacted them about things four or five times that we wanted and they responded every time and quickly. I just wish I knew how to better keep sand away. The listing does not do the location justice, It was a beautiful walk to a beach that was not crowded that was close enough that people parked away further from the house to walk to the beach. It has private parking which can sometimes be hard to find in the area and the homeowners provided passes for parking on the street. I read a few reviews before booking and was a little concerned about the house, and those concerns were not warranted at all. This is an old home a block form the ocean, the upkeep in what is expected from the age of home and location. The homeowners even provided shampoo's, soaps, and laundry detergent, which was not expected but very welcomed. I could continue, but I don't want this to be too long.

Interesting (quirky) house, good (but noisy) location, great hosts

Our family (8 adults, 1 child, 3 infants) all stayed here for a recent family vacation. There are plenty of beds, but no single room where everyone can be together. As long as you adopt a flexible attitude, it will work out fine. During the course of our week, we had a few problems (ants, hot tub, dryer) all of which were quickly addressed by the owners. There is what appears to be a nice kitchen on the main floor, but typical for a transient rental, the cookware and utensils leave a lot to be desired. There was no such thing as a sharp knife, or a pan that could be used without first cleaning. There were also a surprising amount of cob webs and dust. We cleaned up a lot as we went along, but we weren't there to clean so much was left for the next renters. The place could really use a good, deep cleaning. Especially considering the mandatory cleaning fee. In terms of noise, there's plenty of it. The house is on the corner of a couple very busy streets - to the point that it's difficult to have a normal conversation in the main dining room. None of the bathrooms have a window, and the ones in the lowest level have a musty characteristic. The back yard is nice, but could use some attention. There are some significant gaps in the decking around the hot tub that really need to be rebuilt; the patio furniture is worn and dated, and you will need to use the leaf blower daily (provided) to keep it clear from all the tree droppings (leaves). So all things considered, would we stay there again? Maybe. It's only a few blocks from the beach, a short drive to the Boardwalk, and an easy drive to great hikes and scenic paddling. Taking everything into consideration, our family vacation was a 5, but this house is really only a solid 3. Diminished by the road noise, dated nature of the house, condition of the patio and appliances, and the quirky electrical system. But boosted by the owners who responded immediately to any questions and were there in person after learning that they dryer wasn't working (due to a circuit breaker).

We appreciate the praise bestowed upon us as the quick to respond to the dryer and spa issue ( just a reset button on spa) , so my husband and I were quite puzzled as to why neither of the two people (husband & wife) mentioned anything about dust , cobwebs and dirty dishes/ pots pans, while we sat and talked to both on 2 separate occasions as we worked to fix the dryer . We would have gladly sent our cleaning staff over or made an adjustment to the cleaning fee. As for the home, the electrical is up to code , and you indicated you were from back east where they do things differently . The bathroom upstairs does have a very large window and the lower ones have exhaust fans which should be used especially since there aren’t windows and we have high humidity and close to the beach . Not sure what musty characteristic means: maybe you didn’t utilize the fans which also both have timers on them. We aren’t into modern outdoor furniture as our home is over 115 years old and we feel the wicker furniture is appropriate., which has new cushions. We will repair the deck as the tree roots on the big oak tree have caused it to buckle . Thanks for bringing it to our attention , as well as the cutlery. Will definitely buy some new ones! Can’t help the traffic noise, we are a resort town and with the great location as you pointed out- a block to beach brings in a lot of vacationers to our little city. Our last 2 guests raved about our home. While we can’t please everyone we do strive to do so.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are glad you liked the location, as it is a 3 minute walk to the best beach in Santa Cruz. Having a lot of beds allows for more people to stay, but we will consider removing a few as to give guests more "elbow room". But most people are out and about doing so much they spend little time at the home. Also thank you choosing our home.

Delightful home in a terrific location

This nicely decorated home worked very well for our three-generation family gathering. It was in an excellent location--just a short walk to the beach and in a typically Santa Cruz neighborhood with restaurants, small stores, etc. nearby. The place was well-outfitted (with beach towels, even, which we appreciated!). We very much enjoyed our stay and hope to return in the future.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Painted Lady

I had the pleasure of staying at the Painted Lady over the Christmas Holidays. My family found the home charming and unique. The home was tastefully decorated and very clean. It had more than enough towels, kitchen staples and toiletries. The beds were extremely comfortable with luxurious bedding. Our family of 12 had plenty of space and privacy. The second kitchen came in very handy with the extra refrigerator and loca&on a step away from the outside deck. It was so great to have the beach a 3 minute walk from the home. And a)er a long day playing, a soak in the hot tub *nished the day o+ perfectly. The loca&on is great, there is plenty of parking for 5 cars and we could walk to some many restaurants which was a real treat not needing a car! We fell in love with this old house and will certainly plan a trip back. -Chris Anthoney

Lovely historic home with awesome location

A group of traveling nurses spent a month at the Painted Lady. We had such a wonderful time enjoying the spacious, warm and lovely furnished home. We were a little concerned since one of the last reviews talked about an issue with rodents. We were there in the winter for 30 days and never saw any critters of any kind, any ants or any bugs. The home was lovingly furnished with beautiful antiques and was very clean. The beds were super comfy, and the upstairs kitchen was to die for! We loved Twin Lakes beach only a 5 minute stroll and the easy accessibillity to numerous restaurants. We will definitely be back. Owners were easy to work with and our deposit was promptly refunded. I would highly recommend this home to anyone.

Charming House in Santa Cruz, CA

14 long term friends recently gathered in this house for our annual reunion. We always go to a different location in the western US or Europe. This house in Santa Cruz was perfect for us. Enough bedrooms and bathrooms that we were not crowded. The layout of the house allowed for privacy when wanted and group gatherings for meals and hangouts. It's a 5 minute walk to the beach and restaurants and close to the Boardwalk for entertainment. Quite fun.

We are so glad you enjoyed our beautiful old Victorian, Most people appreciate its unique qualities as well as all of the sleeping accommodations it can provide for large groups. While families tend to be the majority of our guests, groups such as yours, can also find the space and charm of the home to meet and exceed their needs. Thank you for taking time to share your thoughts and observations. We hope you return soon to the Painted Lady.

Beautiful spacious home with awesome location

My 3 siblings and myself opted to do a family get together in Santa Cruz. The Painted Lady was the perfect choice: Spacious, unique and furnished beautifully. The 6 bedrooms offered us all our own space. The extra kitchen also came in handy. We had lots of room for extra beverages, desserts and and overflow. The beach was only a 3 minute walk. Fantastic beach which even allowed bonfires. ( As well as Boogie Boards provided in the home)! The home was clean and came well stocked with toilet paper, paper towels, soaps and plenty of towels. We enjoyed the jacuzzi as well. Great place for a mini vacation. Planning on coming again and next time we will spend a week!!

Unique house in a great location

My group and I had a great time at this house. The space was clean and ready for our group with plenty of dishes, towels, toilet paper, etc. The layout is quite unique, which we all had a good time exploring. Location is top notch, walkable to many things but still reasonably quiet. I would recommend this house, and stay here again! Thanks.

We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed our home. It does have an incredible location: two blocks to ocean and numerous restaurants and boating activities. The character of the home is special with its numerous doors, nooks and crannies. The three levels offer many surprises! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We do hope you make a return visit to our home.
