About this property

"Sea Barn" Robert Motherwell's Waterfront Home/Studio Renovated And Reimagined

This newly renovated 2500 sq. foot, 3 level home, sits directly on the bay/beach in Provincetown. You can hear the waves hitting the shore in all 3 waterfront bedrooms. This magnificently located home, with a huge deck is "Sea Barn" the former home and studio of the American Abstract Expressionist painter Robert Motherwell. It was exquisitely redesigned by a Boston architect to maximize its relationship to the magnificent waterfront site.

There are 3 bedrooms (2 king and 2 twins) with adjacent sitting areas on each floor. Everything is absolutely new! There is a grill for outdoor cooking and balconies on each floor which have unmatched waterfront views of Provincetown Harbor and Cape Cod Bay. All of the bathrooms have been exquisitely appointed in Italian Carrara tile.

My husband is an architect who has been renovating Robert Motherwell's historic Sea Barn home and studio for the past 2.5 years. It has been a labor of love, designing every detail of the building and its interior design. I am a graphic designer and a professor of design and video at Simmons College in Boston.

Why they chose this property

"Sea Barn" is a significant piece of Provincetown's history as an artists colony. Robert Motherwell lived in this building from 1961 until 1992. During those summers he produced a significant proportion of work and was a highly valued member of Provincetown's community of artists. We were fortunate to acquire the property in 2012. Since it's acquisition we thoroughly renovated the building for use as our home.

What makes this property unique

If you love being on the beach, walking huge distances at low tide, and swimming at high tide, this is a vacation place for you. This is beach living at its finest with easy access to a lively downtown area. Few homes are as beautifully designed with all modern appliances (air conditioning!) and architectural details that enhance this unique historic building and waterfront location.
