We were in town for the Coast Guard Marathon. The race goes right by the house, and the kids enjoyed cheering along the runners. The road was also open enough that my husband could spend the beginning at the house, and meet me at the finish. We had our kids 2.5 and 5 with us. They enjoyed being able to see the horses and donkeys every day when returning home. On night one, there were two deer in the backyard, followed by 30 the next night. Easy jaunt down to the waterfront. Very peaceful and clean. If you enjoy cooking, the kitchen pots/pans were sparse, but there was enough to get by. We would definitely love to stay again!
My family and I were lucky enough to come across this property for a crew sprint hosted on site. We decided to make it weekend getaway. We enjoyed the entire property, the horses, beach and trails. We will be back!
We enjoyed the peaceful country atmosphere and the sweet horses & donkeys nearby. The kayaks and beach were perfect for daytime hangouts and evening dinners by the grill. The unit is very new with durable finishes and comfortable furnishings.
What a wonderful place! It is so peaceful and relaxing. You are staying above the horses with the donkeys right across the road. Beach is a nice walk. There are board games and books, complete kitchen and the bedrooms are huge and comfy. Highly recommend!

The accommodations were wonderful! Clean and inviting space. The only downside was the apartment is above a barn and you can hear everything from down below, so if you are a light sleeper this may not be the place for you.
If you want to step away from the craziness of life, then the Red Barn is your answer. The animals are all sweet, even the donkeys who greet you on your arrival. You will see deer grazing behind the barn, and you can easily spend hours at the Bugsby beach. Carol is a very special hostess, who will make sure your stay is enjoyable. The nice thing about this property is location. The location gives you the opportunity to enjoy the country but at the same time close to Elizabeth City, and area tourist attractions.
OMG I can't say enough good about this property. Beautiful location, great amenities (beach, picnic area, gentle horses and donkeys). Soft beds. Very nice bed linen, fully stocked kitchen, deck with very nice furniture. The owner responded immediately to my comments and allowed me to stay 2 hrs past check-out time. I would recommend this property to anyone wanting to get away in a country setting. Thanks to all who helped me. May God bless you all!
My family and I had the most incredible time staying in the "barn-dominium"! The space is thoroughly modern but with beautiful, cozy-coastal touches, and Carol went out of her way to make us feel welcome and comfortable to ask questions if we needed to. And if you're an animal lover, well, this is your paradise. The horses and donkeys are super friendly, and the surrounding property is full of wildlife (lots of birds and deer). There's the beautiful river and woods if you want to relax in nature, and Elizabeth City nearby for dining, shopping and more. We absolutely adored our stay and we'll be back as soon as we can to scritch behind Buck and Bugsy's ears!
This is such a unique property. We came to kayak. Launching from the property’s beach was easy. Newbegun Creek is beautiful! We were able to easily get to other kayaking destinations from there including Lake Drummond in the Great Dismal Swamp! The barn is well appointed and it was such fun to see the horses and donkeys every day. Low connectivity meant fully unplugging which was just fine with us! Carol was very attentive and easy to get ahold of. We highly recommend staying here!
We loved our stay! Carol and her husband are very accommodating and amazing hosts. We will be back! We love the animals. Our daughter especially enjoyed feeding the horses and donkeys. The private beach was breathtaking. We enjoyed the canoes and the view. We rode around the trails in the golf cart also. We enjoyed riding around in it! The condo is beautifully designed. Clean and spacious. We had a great time! We went to h2obx which is an hour away but was worth staying at the barndominion for everything you get with the property.
Carol and Dan,
Thank you for being the most gracious of hosts and opening up this majestic and serene slice of Heaven for us to recharge on. The best compliment I could offer was that we had a difficult time leaving the property to do other things we had planned. We would have been content to spend the days on the beach and hanging out with our new animal friends. If I lived closer, I would had serious trepidation about sharing this treasure in hopes it would be available to me for the many times I would visit! Thank you for this unexpected gift!
Highlights were the golf cart, private beach, kayaks provided, the beautiful horses and donkeys and the wildlife!
Beautiful apartment over a working barn with the sweetest horses and donkeys! These animals are your official greeters each time you pull up. Whether you're inside playing games or outside on the deck enjoying the peace and serenity while you watch for deer - there is something for everyone. Take the golf cart to the beach/picnic area at the waterfront, hike the trails, and enjoy feeling like you're miles away from the city.
The decor, comfort and attention to detail are second to none that we have experienced. Do yourself a favor and stay here! Thank you, Carol (host), for answering every message promptly. Until next time .....
We absolutely loved staying at this property! The house was clean, with a nice layout; the bedrooms were on opposite sides of the house. The horses and donkeys were happy to get our attention and love and didn't mind our little dogs :) (We didn't let them get too close). Our favorite part of the property was the waterside at the end of the lane. However, we thought we would have a water view from the top deck. Having the golf cart to drive down to the water (which wasn't far at all) made up for not having the view of the water. We loved the neighborhood and even looked up homes for sale while we were there :) We will stay there again :)
The photos don't do this beautiful apartment justice. It is light and airy with a southern exposure and a nice deck. Everything is brand new and was super clean. What a treat to step into the heated floors in the bathrooms. The bedrooms are large as is the living space. We had everything we needed. We went for the Elizabeth City Coast Guard Marathon - what a bonus to have the runners go past the property. The owners brought us chairs and music to cheer them on. The property is large and private - it was a nice walk or golf cart ride to the water. The dogs loved it! Speaking of animals - the horses loved our attention and the donkeys were quite an attraction for us and the runners. If we could give 6 stars we would.
