Little Green House - Monterey House - Historic Downtown Cottage, With Beautiful Yard
If walls could talk… this historic eco-friendly cottage would have stories to tell. Located in the Monterey neighborhood that was the inspiration for John Steinbeck’s “Tortilla Flat,” it's been renovated top to bottom, but retains its storybook windows, exposed beams, and shiplap walls, along with a grand original stone fireplace that will invite you to spin your own tales beside the hearth. Two separate office spaces make it easy to both work and play. And with three different outdoor areas, you can relax on the loungers in the sun, dine under a towering cypress strung with lights, or warm up by the firepit after sunset. Walking distance to all the best of downtown Monterey (including wineries, breweries, bakeries, restaurants and Trader Joe’s), and just a five-minute drive or a quick bike ride to the beach and Fisherman’s Wharf. One dog accepted with prior screening at https://monterey.petscreening.com. NOTE: No crypto-mining, EV or RV charging allowed.

We had a wonderful stay in the Little Green House. Close enough to walk to everything, yet set in a quiet and peaceful neighborhood. Comfortable and spacious for the two of us, we thoroughly enjoyed our three month stay there. The weather in Monterey is unbeatable, and the deer that wander through the neighborhood add to the tranquil environment. Would easily choose to stay here again.
The Little Green House was so awesome I almost don’t want people to know about it! I want to keep it to myself! It was perfect, very clean, and modern yet at the same time rustic, and it felt like home. Loved the GreenPans!

Little Green House, Monterey, CA
We stayed in this "Tortilla Flats" home in Old Town Monterey, mid-February to mid-March, 2026. It is with mixed comments as this little house was quite quaint: quiet neighborhood with friendly neighbors, central and walkable to Monterey, its fabulous restaurants, Trader Joe's, Tuesday farmers' market, museums, old adobes, the ocean-front/walk, easy access to PG, routes 1 and 68 and, of course, the Aquarium. We enjoyed the recorded bugle calls for Reveille (7 AM), Assembly (5 PM) and Taps (10PM) that came from the Presidio. As to this little house: grand and old (200-300 years old) Monterey cypress in the front, fenced yard ideal for our dog and privacy, comfortable lounge chairs, well-groomed yard. Inside, there was a framed print with the words "John Steinbeck, Tortilla Flats" simply drawn with a few basic colors. These colors and thoughtful theme prevailed throughout the little home. We appreciated the remodeled and fairly well-stocked kitchen and the comfortable dining and living areas. We have mixed opinions about the queen-sized bed with one of us finding it OK and the other barely finding it so. The heater in this room did not work at all and included a notice on it that said it wasn't working. The gas furnace worked but very infrequently...a faulty thermostat? We relied on the two portable heaters and the gas fp (original which was quite well-built), and the one ceramic heater that we happened to bring with us to keep us warm especially in the chilly AMs. Most annoying, thou' was that one of the breakers kept flipping off. This controlled the Internet (TV and our computers), the dining table overhead light and the starter for the fp. This happened randomly sometimes with only my computer on. Would we rent this little house again? Given the negatives, maybe, but definitely yes if the needed repairs were done. It was truly awfully cute and we appreciated its age and history. Certainly, the area was wonderful. Assuredly, we will deal with Monterey Bay Property Management...good, responsive people.
