About this property
The Bear Den. Water view, eagle view, deer and black bear, cover deck and BBQ.
The Bear Den is nestled high amongst the evergreen trees where the bald eagles and Ravens fly and the deer and occasional black bears roam. You will have an ocean view from the private covered deck, the living space as well as when you are relaxing on the luxurious king size bed.
If you feel like cooking, use the fully equipped kitchen or the BBQ on the deck with outside seating. Don’t want to cook on vacation? The Bear Den is walking distance to several restaurants, a grocery store and the downtown district which includes historical Creek Street. We have both a local brewery as well as a distillery.
Ketchikan is one of the busiest float planes sites in the world. It is wonderful to look out the window as they are taking off and landing.
The Rain Bird hiking trail is a five minute walk away and for a challenge, the Deer Mountain trailhead is only a five minute drive.
Ketchikan has many opportunities for visitors to experience Alaska. Fishing charters, whale watching, kayaking, ATVs and a logging show are just a few of the options. You can also walk to the Totem Heritage Museum, The Ketchikan Historical museum or the Southeast Discovery Center.
The Bear Den is located on the lower level of our multi-level cliff side home overlooking the Tongass Narrows. It has it’s own private set of stairs on the right side as you walk down the driveway. Parking is available at street level, just look for the “Bear Den” sign.
We have a swing set, basketball hoop and trampoline and outdoor fire pit which you are welcome to use.

Hosted by Don & Brenda Loughman

Welcome! We are Brenda and Don Loughman. We have raised four beautiful children here in Ketchikan and now enjoy play time with our six grandchildren that we are so lucky to have all residing in right here in Ketchikan. Avid boaters, we love to be out on the water, fishing and exploring whenever we can.
Don owns a local construction company "Woodwright Construction" which will someday be passed down to his two sons. Brenda runs her own company as well "Computer Access" that serves people with low vision to assist in computer skills.

Why they chose this property
When looking for a lot to build our dream home we knew we wanted to be in town within short walking distance of schools, shops and stores and we also wanted to have a view of Ketchikan's waterfront, Tongasss Narrows. We bought this property as an undeveloped, wooded hillside lot. Although we could have cut all of the trees for a totally unobstructed view, we chose to keep most of them. With the house being built on a hill side, looking at the waterfront through the trees gives it a feel of being in a tree house. The bonus we received from leaving these trees is that the area immediately surrounding the house has now become a haven for Bald Eagles and their young. In the summer months its not uncommon to see 10-15 Bald Eagles keeping a watchful eye for fish scraps from the fish processing plant (Philips Cold Storage) below. One particular year there were so many eagles that we needed to go to the water front to get a proper count of all the white heads in these trees; we counted 80!
