About this property

Revelin Hvar - Unique 16th-century UNESCO Tvrdalj Castle guest wing near beach

Revelin is the original guest wing of a five-hundred-year-old UNESCO castle. The charming Tvrdalj Castle 1520 was created by the eminent nobleman poet Petar Hektorović. When it was complete with ornamental gardens, a chapel and a romantic stone fishpond, Petar Hektorović added Revelin in 1553 to welcome travellers to Hvar.

Find yourself in the heart of his renaissance castle, behind high stone walls, in the centre of Stari Grad, the 2400-year-old former island capital. This remarkable fortified residence was created with a visionary renaissance idea of being a home to all creatures, fish, birds and animals, as well as for the nobility, the local community and travellers.

Revelin offers beautiful, spacious accommodation. It is a semi-detached house. There are five air-conditioned bedrooms, four bathrooms, a living room, a study, and a kitchen with dining for eight. There is discreet, off-street entry and a private, south-facing garden courtyard with dining and lounge seating for eight. Created for travellers, it is ideal for families and friends as a base to explore Hvar.

Step inside to enjoy the light-filled rooms, wake up to lovely views of gardens and heritage on all sides. Enjoy the kitchen with its marble countertops and traditional stone sink; relax in the sitting room with stone fireplace (in use in the colder months). Make use of the bright and sunny study, ideal for homeworking. Striking a balance between simple living and luxury, you will find the modern conveniences you need to relax, alongside a neutral décor and natural materials to connect to the easy-going lifestyle typical of the Mediterranean region.

In the pretty, walled courtyard, there is a BBQ and alfresco dining for eight with views of the 15th century Dominican Monastery, ideal for stargazing after dinner, sipping an iced drink on the warm Adriatic summer nights. Revelin also has a small stone balcony overlooking the Church of St Roko. Enjoy unrivalled views of Petar Hektorović's Tvrdalj Castle, gardens and acclaimed fishpond, which adjoins Revelin. Please note, there is no direct access to the Tvrdalj fishpond from Revelin.

The house is situated in the car-free zone of Stari Grad, but we organise free parking nearby for those with a vehicle. Revelin has its aristocratic roots firmly within Petar Hektorović's castle, which inspired its calm spirit and curated spaces to connect with the views. The property offers a truly one-of-a-kind experience, combining rich cultural heritage with the charm of Mediterranean living.

You will enjoy staying between the hillside and the seafront, with the Mediterranean world on your doorstep, traffic free. Step outside for coffee under the palm trees in the main square; walk along the seafront to discover the charming restaurants, pizzerias and bakeries. There are coffee and wine bars, ice-cream and supermarkets. It is a one-minute walk to the marina to watch yachts and sunsets.

It is a privilege for us to be part of the 2400-year-old Stari Grad 'the Old Town', recognised by UNESCO World Heritage. It is an ideal base to explore the island with its pristine beaches and very long history. Explore the Medieval, cobbled streets. Visit the Biankini Palace, the tiny church of St John, see Roman mosaics and ancient Greek pottery. Out of town, there are dozens of dazzling beaches that you can reach by car, public transport or rent a boat. Discover the peace of the UNESCO Stari Grad Plain by bike or on foot. To round off your day, you have a choice of restaurants.

The fascinating life of Hvar island is appreciated in respect of a certain art of living, loving nature, respecting it, taking an interest in the locality and its traditions. It was for these reasons that Revelin was founded by Petar Hektorović in 1553.

Step into a timeless story at Revelin.

The Tvrdalj Castle is on the main square of Stari Grad next to the calm Adriatic sea. We know a lot about the creator of the Tvrdalj Castle because of the many documents left by its creator, the poet Petar Hektorović. The alluring and life-confirming Mediterranean way of living is intrinsic to this property and the town.
