About this property

Historic Cabin along the West Rosebud River

Tucked into the foothills of the dramatic Beartooth Mountains and sitting on the banks of the West Rosebud River is an historic getaway known as the Torgrimson Place at the Bench Ranch.

Here, the Pulitzer Prize winning author Wallace Stegner escaped the hustle and bustle of everyday life to experience a retreat into the quiet, simple beauty of the natural landscape of Montana. The cabin has also been enjoyed by such notables as humorist Dave Barry and poet Allen Ginsberg. However, every guest is important, and to many of those who return year after year, the Torgrimson Place feels like home.

Big Sky Country, to see it is to believe it. Expansive vistas, wide-open prairies, rugged and spectacularly stacked mountain ranges, and trout-filled rivers grace this landscape. Like other prominent figures in American history, such as Lewis and Clark, Sitting Bull, Charlie Russell, and a score of acclaimed writers and artists, experience it with your own senses.

The Torgrimson Place is rare: this is sanctuary.

Gorgeous, Peaceful, Comfortable Place
Seeing the original ax/adze marks on the cabin logs links you to history. Easy in an out to Fishtail and it's not to miss General Store, with a tasty deli and coffee nook. The cabin is comfortable, clean as a whistle with a front yard that is a beautiful place to sit and read , view the Beartooths and always be lulled by the babbling brook and a bit further, the W. Rosebud River. Will return!

Excellent
Torgrimson Place is wonderful, especially if you like history. It is a very cute old house with every modern amenity. Extremely quiet and private. Peaceful. The E Rosebud Creek running is the perfect ‘white noise’. We really enjoyed it. Property manager went out of her way to make sure all was well, even brought us fresh raspberries. Thank you

Montana born and raised, I have loved the outdoors and the mountains my whole life. My family and I love to hike, fish, snow shoe, and go on 4 wheeling adventures. Art and photography capture our attention, easily inspired by the scenic views to be had in the West Rosebud Valley.

Why they chose this property

Bench Ranch has been owned and operated by the Heyneman family since 1959, and since they set foot on the property, they developed a holistic philosophy and a mission to become stewards of this land. They follow a Holistic Resource Management (HRM) plan and also focus on conservation in order to preserve the raw beauty of the landscape for generations to come. There are so many activities to enjoy in the pristine air here at the foothills of the Beartooth Mountains. Hiking, mushroom hunting, bird watching, paddle boarding...you name it. My whole family loves it out here. And the stars, my gosh, the stars!

What makes this property unique

In the heart of the Mountain Crow country, ceded to settlement in 1892, Thomas Lay squatted on this acreage along the West Rosebud. He found John Silverston, from Tronheim, Norway, to use his skills with broad axe and adze to fashion a simple but stout cabin from logs hewn from the upper creek. The cabin, root cellar and cobblestone irrigation diversion wall were the original improvements, with the chicken house, machine shed and barn being added later. A large part of Stillwater County was homesteaded by first or second generation Norwegian immigrants and by 1910 seven percent of the population of Montana hailed from Norwegian stock. Henry Torgrimson moved here from Minnesota in 1900, purchased 160 acres from Thomas Lay and filed his claim. By 1906 he had proved up the claim, but he had also proved to himself and his wife Margarethe that he was no farmer. In 1910 they moved to nearby Absarokee where his success as a merchant was aided by his fluency in Norwegian, the lingua franca of his customer base. Thereafter various tenants lived here and worked the land until in the 1960’s Jack Heyneman purchased it to become part of the Bench Ranch. From 1992 Jack and Susan made the Torg available to visitors to share in this ongoing history.
