Not suitable for children under 10. Tucked beside the historic 1873 Firmstone Manor, this newly renovated cottage was the estate's original kitchen house — now reimagined with every modern convenience while keeping its 19th-century character intact. Step outside and 16 acres of rolling Alleghany County countryside are yours to explore, with mountain views from the property and quiet spots to read, sip your morning coffee, or watch the sun set behind the ridgeline. Inside, the single-level cottage offers two bedrooms (one king, one queen), a bathroom with a tiled walk-in shower, and a spacious family room with a dining table. The full kitchen is outfitted with a refrigerator, range, dishwasher, and Keurig coffee maker — so your first cup is ready before the rest of the world wakes up. Central A/C, heat, and high-speed internet keep things comfortable year-round, and 4K streaming TVs in each bedroom and the family room work with your Roku guest account. Our location is something special: we sit almost exactly halfway between Clifton Forge, Lexington, and Bath County, which means you can base yourself somewhere peaceful and be at a vineyard, a national forest trailhead, or the historic Warm Springs Pools in under 30 minutes. Firmstone Manor itself, one of the largest surviving Victorian homes in Alleghany County, sits on the property and is currently being restored alongside the other cottages on the estate.

Everything about The Kitchen At Firmstone Manor was impeccable. It was such a lovely and cozy cottage. Made it the perfect place to celebrate my birthday. Big thanks to our hosts, Brian and Michael for making our stay so memorable. Will definitely be back!
very clean comfortable home with lots of personal touches! Thank you for the cookies, bread and cider!!! We will definitely be making a trip back here.
The hosts did seem welcoming. The house is great although there needs to be more towel hooks for drying or several more towels when 4 people are there for more than a couple of day.
Wonderful, whimsical cottage near Clifton Forge/Covington and surrounding natural beauty. Owners have anticipated guest needs and added thoughtful touches.
The home was very unique and decorated beautifully! The property is historic, quaint and close to the highway with easy access to Lexington, VA and a view of the mountains. Thanks for a wonderful stay and for providing the best cookies and local beverages!
We had an amazing stay at the kitchen house. The entire place was decorated so cute and every detail was impeccable. We loved it and will be back! Brian was super helpful and made our stay with the fresh bread, cookies and local craft beer to try. We had a great visit!
We stayed the weekend at the Kitchen house at Firmstone Manor and are leaving more relaxed and restored than we could have hoped for, and we are already planning our next trip back. Situated away from the busyness of Lexington but close enough to get to any events, the fresh air and proximity to hiking trails had us spending lots of time outdoors and gave us excellent sleeps. The beds and linens are very high-quality at, and the whole interior is thoughtfully and carefully appointed. We had the pleasure of meeting the owners, Michael and Brian, and it’s clear that their top priority is to create easy, calming, and memorable stays for their guests. Upon entering, we were greeted with a vase of fresh flowers. local baked goods in the kitchen, and local juices, and beers in the fridge! When we travel as a family, we always need more than one bedroom and the nightly rate makes this an excellent value relative to adjoining rooms in a hotel. We cannot wait to return!
We had a wonderful stay at the Kitchen House! The attention to detail by the owners, to inclcude the beautiful accomodations and treats, can not be understated. Brian was a perfect host, and we can't wait to visit again and enjoy this beautiful property!
We dropped our son off at a local college in Lexington and stayed in this lovely property for the weekend. I’m from the gorgeous decor to the welcome treats, every part of our stay was perfect. The home is delightful and the owners were attentive and friendly. We plan to stay here each time we visit our son! Thank you for a great time!
Check in was easy, communication very prompt, owners super nice, beds comfortable, love the colorful and fun decor, easy access to interstate and convenient to places we visited, kitchen has very nice appliances and needs for cooking. Loved the extra touches of fresh flowers and local treats. Truly a wonderful place to stay that i will recommend to friends and family.
Lovely place! Beautifully decorated. Well stocked bathroom & kitchen. Thoughtful treats left by the home owners 😊 Look forward to a return trip to this location!
This little cottage was perfect in every way. Bright, colorful, great attention to detail. We felt comfortable from the moment we walked in the door. Fresh flowers and local baked goods and spirits added to our warm welcome. Keeping this one on our shortlist for sure!
From character to location to cleanliness and hospitality, perfect is the best adjective that comes to . mind. Very quiet area and very convenient access to the interstate. When the host renovated this place it is obvious there was attention to detail in making it an impressive little place.
This rental was beautifully decorated in such happy and bright colors and artwork. The property was stunning. It was fascinating being surrounded by such wonderful, historic places. The hosts left us cookies, bread, and beer all from local artisans. So very thoughtful and welcoming. The bed is incredibly soft! We would certainly recommend staying here!
Lovely property! Our hosts were wonderful and they had cookies, mini-loaves of bread, a bottle of honey wine and a gorgeous bouquet of flowers awaiting us! Great weekend with friends! Could not have been more pleased! Thank you!!
From the moment we stepped into the exquisitely renovated home, we were in an aura of tranquility and refinement. Every facet of the house exuded a perfect blend of comfort, style, and charm. Every corner unveiled a new marvel, from the tastefully decorated living space to the impeccably appointed bedrooms.
The location was perfect for our stay, with access to all the local parks and breweries we were looking to visit. The recommendations for eateries also helped us find another location we'll be sure to visit again.
With rain in the forecast we decided to cancel camping and look for alternate accommodations. We found the Kitchen House last minute and ideally located. It was the perfect home base for our biking adventures, central to the areas we wanted to visit. Brian was responsive and gave us a place to hose down and securely store our bikes. The cottage was clean and colorful – we had everything we needed – the local cider, craft beer, cookies and bread were unexpected and pretty much gone by the time we ended our stay. We will absolutely return if they'll have us.
When we first walked onto the Firmstone Manor property, we could feel the history — a Victorian home built in 1873 by Harry Firmstone, still standing as one of the largest surviving homes in Alleghany County, surrounded by cottages that had served the estate for generations. It needed a lot of love, and we knew right away this was going to be a long-term labor of love rather than a quick flip. The Kitchen House was the first piece of that vision brought back to life — the original 1873 kitchen that once fed the estate, restored from the inside out while keeping its 19th-century character intact. Since then, we've also finished two more cottages on the property: one that served as a service station back in the 1930s, and another that was a single motel unit from the same era, back when this stretch of road was part of the early American road-trip landscape. Each one tells a different chapter of the property's story. The Manor itself is now largely restored as well — including a major addition last year of a semi-commercial kitchen — with just a few small projects still underway. What started as a daunting restoration has become something we're genuinely proud to share. What we offer guests is something rare: quiet, beautifully restored pieces of Virginia history on 16 acres of rolling countryside, perfectly positioned between Clifton Forge, Lexington, and Bath County. Whether you're here to disconnect, to explore the mountains and wineries, or simply to sit on the porch and watch the light change over the ridgeline — we hope it gives you a real sense of stepping back in time, in the best possible way.
