Grandma's House is located in the outport community of Fairbanks, about a 20-minute drive from Twillingate. The home was built back in 1869 and has been in the same family for generations. It is a cherished place, filled with joyful memories. It sits on the edge of North Atlantic, along iceberg alley, offering a stunning view of the sea and a glimpse into life in an outport community.
The Space: As with many homes in NL, you enter through the rear door into the mud room and laundry area. From there, you'll enter the large eat-in kitchen from which you'll take in the gorgeous view of the ocean. As is typical in NL, the entertaining tends to happen in the kitchen and this home has a long history of kitchen parties. The cozy living area is just off the kitchen, and also offers the stunning view. Out front, there is a screened-in porch where you can enjoy a meal or simply relax. Upstairs you'll find 3 bedrooms, two of the rooms have double beds and the third room has a single bed. The full bathroom is also located on the 2nd floor. With this house being built in 1869, the stairs are original to the house. We do ask that guests please be careful when using them, they are narrow, have narrow foot paths and are steep.
Guest Access: Guests have access to the entire home.
The Neighborhood: Fairbanks is a remote outport community. Here you will enjoy peace and quiet. Although the community of Fairbanks does not offer any amenities, the bustling town of Twillingate is only 20 minutes away. There you'll find 3 grocery stores, 2 pharmacies, a liquor store, gas station, as well as various tourist attractions.
Getting Around: Driving is the most typical way that visitors explore the area. That said, it is a walker/hikers dream. Whether you prefer the road or the trails, there is so much to explore.
Other Things to Note: As with many remote NL communities, there are no amenities in Fairbanks. The closest larger communities are Summerford and Twillingate. You'll pass Summerford on your way from Gander or Lewisporte, and Twillingate is about 20 minutes further along Route 340, and worth the trip! A gas station, liquor store, grocery store and pharmacy are available in Summerford. In Twillingate, you'll find 3 grocery stores, a liquor store, 2 pharmacies, restaurants/pubs, and various tourist attractions, including boat tours, the Rockcut Coastal Hiking Trail System, museums, and more!
Interaction with Guests: Managed locally (based in Twillingate) and here if you need us. We're only a message or call away.

Enjoyed the location. Close enough to Twillingate yet far enough away to enjoy solitude. Would stay again if back in NL. Highly recommend Grandmas House
Thanks so much for taking the time to review! We're so glad you enjoyed the home, hopefully we can host you again sometime!

We had a great stay in this beautiful little house with a great view, a nice history, great decor and good books. The house had all of what could be needed and more. The beds and bed sheets were very comfortable. The wifi and cell phone network are soso in this area, which helped to be more in tuned with the environment. Would return any time!
We only had time to stay one night but wish we could have stayed longer. The house was perfect for the scenic setting and I'd recommend it to anyone travelling to that area.

Absolutely beautiful location. Stunning view, great neighbours. House had everything you could think of. Not an accessible house if you have mobility issues as the stairs are steep but not an issue for us. Quiet, close to Twillingate. Loves the history of the home.

Amazing view, super clean, well stocked kitchen and linens. The check in and out process was a breeze. Very close to amenities. We really enjoyed our stay. The only thing that stops it f I'm being a five star is the livingroom furniture. Super cute but not comfortable at all. Made it difficult to relax in the evening.

Truly a "home away from home". Grandma's House has been very thoughtfully kitted-out with all the comforts and amenities you'd forget to ask for but that make such a big difference when you're travelling. This was a working trip and we'd not been able to find a spot handier to our field site that could accommodate our team of three - this corner of the Island is a busy one vacation season! But what a lucky find this place was - well-worth the slightly longer drive for us. Highly, HIGHLY recommend.

Such a cute little house that is quaintly decorated with a gorgeous view from the big screened in porch. It comes with everything you need.
Near Twillingate which has so much to offer. Lots of very cool hikes!

Adorable house, loved the Lobster Pot on the table when we arrived, quiet and short drive to Twillingate and a nice break from travelling. Stairs were very narrow and short hut we adjusted no problem. Would go again and recommend it.

This property was very cozy and welcoming. It took about 3 and a half seconds to feel at home. Everything you need is there and easy to find. Hope tp stay here again someday as I am planning another trip to see the iceburgs. Very happy with this spot.
This place has tons of character and some lovely art and handmade quilts. The locale is lovely and quiet except for the trills of many wild birds. Love the screened porch. But Grandma needs a new couch in the living room. That one is brutal. The bedrooms need places to hang clothes and the bathroom could use more towel racks.Overall we were comfortable and enjoyed our stay. Cheers!
The house is very cute and has everything you might need. Careful on the stairs-they are quite steep and narrow. The front porch is a lovely spot for coffee in the morning. I just wish the beds had been replaced after having been mentioned in previous reviews. Very old and uncomfortable beds.

Liked the screened in porch. Thankful for the use of the washer and dryer.
Disliked the water quality - smelled like fish. The mattresses were saggy... bad sleep. Expensive for one night.

Grandma’s house
Very quaint older home, extremely hot only one fan and beds were terrible. No outside patio or furniture to sit out on. Loved the property but for reasons listed wouldn’t go back

Thanks for the review Debbie. While we don't have a patio, there is a screened in porch. We're hoping to upgrade the outdoor furniture and beds in the future.
Thanks!
More or less correctly as described on website. As this is an old house, it was in pretty good shape. There were a couple of issues: lack of some kitchen utilities. The other issue was the TV really did not work properly. It was possible to sign on to Amazon ( as an example), but the programs could not be streamed or downloaded ,likely because of internet, that was quite weak.Otherwise, everything was in good order , and the beds were very comfortable

“Check-in was easy and the property does have a nice ocean view. Unfortunately, the space felt very neglected and uncomfortable. The kitchen was so outdated that we didn’t feel comfortable cooking or eating there. The stairs were extremely narrow and uneven, and the low ceilings downstairs isn't good if you are tall. There were no blinds or curtains in the bedroom, which raised privacy concerns. The heating setup was also worrying — only plug-in heaters upstairs, and the bathroom heater wouldn’t shut off. Furnishings were worn out (like torn lampshades), and the lighting was very poor throughout. We also noticed bugs on the second day. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this place in its current condition.”

Hi Sharon, thanks for taking the time to leave us a review! We're sorry you didn't seem to enjoy your stay. The home is very old, and parts of the home were purposely left to relive that old style Newfoundland home feel. We do address the stairs right in our listing mentioning they are narrow and steep (original staircase to the home :) Although we do have blinds in the bedroom, we agree, they could maybe use an update, something we are hoping to address in the future. You stayed with us during a heat wave, so the heaters shouldn't have been necessary, but to turn off the heat in the bathroom you just need to turn the dial to the left, which is mentioned in our house binder. We will certainly take a peek at the lampshade to see if it needs replacement.
Thanks for you review and staying with us.
